883.0. "Fred Frith" by JRDV04::SUGIMOTO (Can the world be as sad as it seems?) Mon Aug 12 1991 07:41

Hi, although I could found a topic about "Massacre", it seems no topic for Mr.
Fred Frith! His works are so vast but I want if his related works are
available on CDs. Such as:

	Massacre
	Art Bears
	Henry Cow
	Slap Happy
	Material
	and his own

I only have his latest CD, "Step Across the Border", which is sound track of
the same movie. I went his gig in Japan, ah, really impressive!

Fred Frith plays a couple of The Residents' albums I'm sure. Very

-1, Really?! With Eskimo-Residents?! Uhm, good liaison, maybe, I hope. Wasn't
they American, west-coast band? From the messy '70 L.A. alternative, hadn't
they came arise as Lemon Kittens or else? As F.F traveling all over the world,
he might have chance to come across the Residents. I remember Snakefinger
played guitar with them.
And,hi-ho, I found some Henry Cow's CD at Sibuya(yes,Tokyo area,you cyberpunk
funs)! Do you have any recommendation? Well, it seems this group isn't known
to anybody, I'll recommend for myself, I'll get "Legend"!

Yes the San Fran Residents. I'll check which album he plays on tonight.
I'm sure it's the one that's got 40(!) songs on it.

Indeed, Sugimoto, 'Legend' is a fine album, as is 'In Praise of
    Learning'.

Fred also crops up with Ivor Cutler a couple of times (some good violin pieces
on the `Dandruff' album).

Also, there's a range of Compilation CD's, `Made to Measure, Vols 1-25 (at the
last count)', a couple of which are dedicated to Fred.

FF is on "The Commercial Album" by The Residents. Pop-pickers may be
interested in knowing that there are 20 tracks on each LP side.

Mr. Frith also crops up on Ivor Cutler's 'Velvet Donkey' lp, playing
viola on a few tracks, and is also to be found tickling the ivories on
a Robert Wyatt album or two.

Ah, those good old English (and Scottish) eccentrics - don't ya just
love 'em? Where are they now?

My favorite Frith songs are the couple of highlights he contributed to
"Live Love Larf & Loaf", Best Album of 198?. I prefer his voice to his
guitar, it being harder to ignore.

I bought `Speechless' by Fred the other day. Good stuff. Seems it's called
speechless as most of the tunes(?) are made out of mutated voice samples.
Great end result though. Extra tracks (on the CD) inc. `The entire works of
Henry Cow' which is, well, the entire works of Henry Cow really, all played at
once and condensed down into 60 seconds. The person I was playing it to said
"Demented." and turned the stereo off. That's recommendation enough for me.

Frith also pops up on a sampler released years ago on the Caroline label (a
Virgin offshoot, I believe). The sampler featured the work of some of the more
"left field" of contemporary guitarists. As well as Frith there are
contributions from Hans Reichel (outstanding) and Derek Bailey (wonderful
version of The Lost Chord).

Frith has also made a couple of albums with a quaret featuring himself, Richard
Thompson, Simon French, and Henry Kaiser.
