Not many people know this (stop me if you've heard this before), but
Shaddapa you Git was originally recorded by Andrew Sachs (aka 'Manuel',
meesa Faaawlty), however it was buried chartwise by the far superior
Joe Dolce version.

How about the great song by CHARLENE??? I've Never Been to Me.
Or I've never been to a music lesson. This had a lovely spoken
interlude where she rambles on and on about having a baby and being
a better person, etc. Induce vomiting NOW.

The 80's brought us the last of the Carpenters (speaking of Vomiting).
A great remake on their Made in America album was BEECHWOOD4-5789
and it ranks as one of the most SAPPY songs in history. I think
Karen deserves her own topic since she spans more than one decade
of tosh. Her Crypt has an inscription on it----

Karen - A Star on Earth ~ A Star in Heaven......

Truly gutwrenching!!

Come clean time.

I DID like the Thompson Twins (although I cringe now) and Howard Jones
(Not until I saw him sing accapela on some programme once, but I was
suprised how well he actually could sing!).

However, Kajagoogoo figure highly on the "BCR of the 80s" scale.

Still you shouldn't mock people with dyslexia! (Remember the man
who called himself Limahl?!?!)

854.15UBOHUB::FIDDLER_MTue Jun 18 1991 13:4011
Back in 81/82, I thought the Thompson Twins were brilliant - this was
before they slimmed to a 3 piece, changed thier image and style a
little also. Some of the best gigs i saw at Uni were by the Thompsons
- 'in the name of love' (original version) marked a generation of
students. They turned crap in around 83, when they toured with Tears
for Fears as support. TTs gigs used to end with everyone getting up on
stage and banging away on various percussion thingies - great fun.

I got into them when they first became a 3 piece (Lies, lies, lies,

everything beyond the album with Lies on it is dubious to say the

Ian Saxby, a man after me own heart!! not only are they
mega-hyper-glalacto tosh, but they also hold the distinction, nay
honour, of having an unbeatable tosh quotient (herinafter referred to
as TQ) which spans not one, but two decades (the 70's and the 80's)
with no sign of a let-up as we get well into the 90's.

I suppose one has to hand it to them - it must be extremely difficult
to maintain such a standard of TQ. I've never known them to slip up,

the 80's was a kind of strange decade...punk fizzled out, New romantics

854.50WELMTS::GREENBSigh & ExplodeWed Jun 19 1991 13:3912
Yep, those three Waits albums are quite brilliant, especially Rain
Dogs.

At the time, I blamed the so-called floppy fringe brigade for the
decline of pop music - previous to this, around 78-80, the more commercial
bands to emerge from the 'new wave' (Jam, Costello, XTC, Undertones,
Squeeze, etc) had been getting into the charts quite regularly, and making
some good noisy records (i.e. with guitars on) too.

What Tim said about the Dance movement being an important part of the
80's - he's dead right. When people like Phil Collins, Kylie, Madonna,
Bros, Happy Mondays, Shamen, New Order start doing House based mixes
you know something has influenced mainstream. Also what about the
early 80's synth stuff? Depeche Mode, Yazoo, some of Kraftwerk's
stuff. Technology came to the forfrony in the 80's completely changing
the way a lot of people went about making records.

My favourite decade.

Bob,

Definately 80's tosh with a vengeance. None other than the fabulous
Modern Romance who inexplicably were "big in Japan", resulting in
a live album which was released just as they were on the wane in
the UK. Just how the Japs came to terms with the Mods' (as they shall
be known) very own brand of Pub-Bastard-Salsa still mystifies me to
this day. In their wake I can imagine millions of Japanese youth
bowling along dressed like George the Hofmeister Bear muttering
things like "triffic" and "Knock it on the 'ead John".

Barry.

Sounds plausible, but you've got a nerve calling New Order 'mainstream'
and implying they jumped onto the dance bandwagon. They started it,
more like, at least in the Indie sector. Quite possibly with "Blue

Sorry Tim youre right I forgot about House..perhaps I was thinking that
house could be a 90's 'trend'..my memory aint good, I am getting on a
bit !!...perhaps also that in the 70's and 80's the 'trends' included
almost 'mass adoption' of the music and its style by the followers.
The styles these days (christ I do sound like an old codger) seem to be
more minority than majority..perhaps because there is more than one
style/trend...thinking about it Gothic was a style/trend in the 80's
albeit a minority one...then again we cant have a punk explosion every
decade.

I really think that Acid House was the "new punk" in a way, it was
underground at the time and has influenced so much music since just
like punk did. I'm sure that the charts etc would be completely
different today if Acid House hadn't occurred and made so many people
take an interest in dance music. There will never be a new punk but I
think we witnessed a similar musical revolution recently without really
knowing it. At the time was punk percieved as being something that
would change all music from then on?

Just some thoughts.

Aaaaargh!! What's Herbie Hancock doing in the 80s tosh note ? With
respect Mark this man was playing (great) music years before you or I
were even around. I'll loan you my copy of "Village Life" to prove it.

I know Herbie Hancock was producing music long ago (is he really old
enough to have been producing music before I was around?), but that
does NOT excuse his support for the Voicoder, a truly appaling blight
on the musical world.

I mean, how does the argument that "Hitler was a bastard, but we better
not knock him 'coz he did build the Autobahnen!" sound? :^)

I've never heard the voicoder. It must be pathetic if you can write off

Who caught Simon 'patronising b*st*rd' Mayo giving "You Bet Your Love"
a spin just before eight o'clock this morning? Great to hear it again,
tho' the vocoder-inspired (!) vocals are a tad grating in this day and
age. I must confess to being quite impressed with them at the time
(note - late '70s), to the extent that I even bought the "Sunlight" LP
featuring the immense "I Thought It Was You", as well as YBYL.

Then again, I'll second Mikef's motion that the man will always be best
remembered for his contributions to modern jazz.

You've never heard the thing that distorts his voice so badly (also
used briefly by Stevie Wonder to severely damage his musical
credibility!)? Now I can understand who you are prepared to defend him!

OK, I'm feeling generous, I'll allow his other output to be taking into
consideration and commute his sentence to a life of listening to 'You
better bet your love'! (Worse than death anyway, in my book! :^))
