847.0. "Desert Island Discs, anyone ??" by MIACT::RANKINE () Wed Jun 05 1991 21:32

Not sure if anyone has created this topic already..apologies if they
    have.
There have been a lot of 'nostalgia lists' recently, the most notable
being the '100 records that shook the world' in Vox. Also the old Radio
4 program 'Desert Island Disks' has been going for yonks and sis still
    very popular.

With these in mind I tried to think of which 10 tracks I would chose,
and why/how I chose them. I tried this with the wife and she chose 10
tracks that represented significant eras in her life, and she ended up
with 4 tracks that she didnt really like.

So the subject for this topic is which 10 tracks would you select and
how would/did you select them ??

Well I went through the old collection and decided to list the artists
that I had seriously liked over the ages, got that down to 10, and
select favourite track from each one. This had some drawbacks eg
getting it down to 10 was tricky, and I also excluded a particular
favourite track, as the group were not particularly significant.

So here are my 10 :- (Alphabetical Order)

    Buzzcocks - Boredom
    Clash - Career Opportunities
    Cocteau Twins - Sugar Hiccup
Free - Come Together in the Morning
    Focus - Sylvia
    Genesis - Carpet Crawl
    Bob Marley - Natural Mystic
    Roxy Music - Remake Remodel
Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next
    Smiths - This Charming Man

I was astonished that the VOX list did not include Elvis Presley's
    "That's alright Mama".

Thats a bit like talking about religion without mentioning God

    Re -1

Problem with lists like that are how do you define 'shook the world' ??
How far back do you go ??....given that Vox is from the NME, then
perhaps most of the readers are not of the age to remember some of the
significant rock'n'roll legends eg Elvis, Bill Haley etc

The question in the basenote sound a bit too difficult Paul. It takes a
bit of thinking about (also don't the guests in Desert Island Discs get
    paid ? -;)

It was curious to see Free in your list. I still like "Mr Big",
    especially for the its bass.

Otherwise I've far too many favourites. It would be too much like hard
work to whittle them down. At the moment I'd include almost everything
(that I've heard) by Captain Beefheart as I've only recently begun
listening to his music. (He was 50 in January and no-one batted an
    eyelid. )

I read somewhere that he died last year! I also like some of his stuff
with the exception of Trout Mask Replica; a truly awful album that
probably belongs in another note elsewhere in this file.

My favourite is Safe as Milk which contains some classic tracks such as

Sure 'nuff an' yes I do
    Zig-Zag Wanderer

    Well worth a listen!

Captain Beefheart has taken up painting full time and lives in some
remote part of California. Apparently he's quite successful at it too.

Another member of the (Safe as Milk) band has become a Christian
    minister.

Re the basenote...no one said it would be easy. It took me some time to
work out HOW I was going to do it, then a couple of hours in the music
room with a pen and a pad of paper....lots of really good bands and
tracks missed the cut eg Cure, Japan,"Song to the Siren" by This mortal
Coil,Santana etc. Even extending the list to 20 tracks would make it
    difficult.
As I said I tried to cut my collection into 10 bands/acts that I
really liked over the years, then take a fave track from each band. I
could quite easily have included 4 tracks from the Cocteaus, but
decided on the different approach. It would be interesting to hear how
what method other people used to select their faves.
C'mon its not that difficult, surprise yourself with your choices, and
    post them in here.
    Cheers
    Paul
