842.0. "Johnny Thunders R.I.P." by JUMBLY::OCONNOR () Thu May 16 1991 15:19

This week's Melody Maker (my flatmate gave it to me - that's my
excuse) carries a piece on Johnny Thunders and is written by his old
      friend Richard Hell.

Thunders, (as you may be sick of reading), was one of the New York
Dolls who formed about 1972 and seemed to occupy the punk side of
glitter-rock. Later he played with Hell in The Heartbreakers.

The music is all very raw and gutsy - some tracks are like a cross
between the Ramones and the Beach Boys. The record "Too Much Too
Soon" is still worth a listen and in their own way they spawned
      lots of other bands.

Hell says that J.T. was sick to death of Western journalists plaguing
him about his heroin habit so in later years he switched his attention
towards Japan where hacks were more civil with him. The piece is
interesting in that it gives a short summary of Thunders by someone
who knew him well. One section outlines favourite Thunders' sayings
one of which is "F___ 'em if they can't take a joke". Anyone who says
that all the time can't be that bad...

The NY Dolls imploded quite fast due to their excesses in every area.
Any young band wanting to make an impact (if only visually) would do
well to swat up on the Dolls. They could even give Neneh Cherry a
lesson or two about this thing called "attitood"...

Lastly, when I was living in France, Thunders became something of a
legend after falling asleep onstage in Paris.

Is the man dead? (Excuse my ignorance)

I saw the Heartbreakers in a tiny venue in 1978 and they were fabulous.
Their L.P., L.A.M.F., is still one of my faves.

I always thought that, along with the Ramones, they were one of
the few American groups to have ridden the crest of the "New Wave".

"Get off the 'phone" and "Can't Keep my eyes on you" are both
	classics.

What is Walter Lure up to?

Yes, as you may have gathered, he's dead.

The story has now moved onto whether or not he was murdered. Items,
including prescribed medicines, were missing from the scene (which I
think was a hotel room). Police are investigating.
