823.0. "Dread Zeppelin" by JUMBLY::OCONNOR (Because you do...) Mon Apr 08 1991 15:35

No note on Dread Zeppelin. So here's one. You may have heard of them.
They're the ones who do reggae versions of Led Zeppelin classics and
add an Elvis-style vocal for effect. I bought the CD single "Your Time
Is Gonna Come" at the weekend. On it they also do a version of Joni
Mitchell's "Woodstock" - reggaified, Elvis-fied and an old Zeppelin
riff thrown in for good measure. To the say the least, it provokes a
reaction, whether that is laughter or horror is up to the listener.

They also do a previously unreleased Zep song "Hey Hey What Can I Do ?".
It's quite hummable and has the singer mumbling something about wanting
a "bananna and peanut butter sandwich" and `Tortelvis' (for it is he)
sings "I got a woman who can ball all day..." Hey Hey Whay Can I say ?
    ...unnnh..."phallic rock" ??

The album's titled "Un Led-ed" and I just might buy it.

    I just might not.

Saw them in New York in September, and after a dozen Coronas
they were pretty amusing. But almost sober the next day I was
    positively embarrassed.

I saw them on the Teevee once, they did a version of "Your
time is gonna come". I am still in a state of shock.

Rumour has it that the day after that very transmission, Jimmy
Page was walking round Cookham asking people to pinch him...

	Jonathan.

I think that Dread Zep are worth a listen anyhow. Even the people who
haven't liked them much found the songs amusing. The four tracks on the
single come across as pure cheek. On "Woodstock" Tortelvis mumbles on
about how he couldn't make it to Woodstock festival but told Joni to
"write about it honey,...juss write about for me..." It's like a joke
    you can dance to.

And I never listen to reggae usually.

I was. I agree with Tony. One of the worst gigs by a big-name band I

    live forever, I am afraid.

I must admit that live they were a little "erratic", still it's
all a matter of taste. You've got to put them in the context of
the late 60s/early 70s though before rating them. Incidentally,
children, .6 was not entirely serious...

Jonathan (who has been playing guitar since he got his first

I agree that LZ had some classic tunes such as Kashmir, Stairway to

Now Kashmir (incidentally, one of my least fav. LZ toons, give me LZ 1
any day) would be classic in the hands of Dread Zeppelin, possibly as
good as the butchery suffered by the gloopy 'Nights in White Satin' at
    the hands of the Dickies.

people in the UK,for the most part, dislike Led Zep,A friend of mine
mentioned(and please don't blow my head off for this),who grew up and
lived in the UK, that people were generally very trendy about music

You're not kidding. The only good thing about the Beastie Boys was that
they got me listening to LZ again. Although I have to admit, I wish to
hell they hadn't written Stairway to Heaven. The one thing guaranteed
to get up my nose is people pretending to be Jimmy Page and playing
Stairway really badly at parties ( No offence Jonathon :-) I'm sure you
    sound as good as Jimmy :-) :-) :-) ).

Haven't heard Dread Zep yet, but given my irreverence towards classic
bands and tracks, I'll probably find someone I can scrounge a copy off
of so I can make my own judgements.

As it 'appens (guys and gals), a lot of today's kids who weren't there
first time around are now digging the sounds of many late-60's to early
70's prog-rockers, such as Led Zep, thus proving the timeless wonder of
their music once and for all, or thus proving the timeless wonder of
    marketing hype anyway.

I can't say that I liked Led Zep in the late 60's and early 70's, but I
remember being given albums such as Foxtrot and Aqualung when they
first came out, so for some of us at least it the music quality not the

You're just TOO cool Piers. I believe medication is available.

I'm a firm believer that there's no better way to start the day than a
healthy dose of Led Zep at a healthy volume and before breakfast.

Take this morning fr'instance...I listened to Led Zep and Sandy Denny
doing "Battle of Evermore". It's true that it's a real shame about the
lyrics (the kind of mystic mumbo jumbo that would have sent Jimbo to
the A.A.). However the insistent mandolin strumming and the two lead
    vocals work really well.

I am, however, one of those people who just cannot stand "Stairway to
    Heaven".
