821.0. "Juilan Cope ???" by PAKORA::GMOORE () Mon Apr 01 1991 14:18

    HI
Has anybody heard the new double album by Juilan Cope?
I Thought the first single "beautiful love " was really
good and wondered if it was worth buying the album.

821.2i've got a love song in my head...SRFSUP::BERZERempire of the senselessMon Apr 01 1991 20:3511
I've heard most of the CD (there's a DJ here who's been playing
the whole album throughout her show for the last few weeks) and
it is unmistakably his best. The CD is supposed to be the longest
playing non-classical CD ever made; this should make up for Morrissey's
    shortest CD ever made ;-}

The album hasn't been released yet in the US (due out in May), so
I really can't give any specifics. I'm just glad Diedre O'Donaghue,
who has the ability to play whatever she wants, loves the new album.

I have just noticed I spelt Julian wrong, sorry about that.
I Have been told the album is out here in Scotland, so I am
going to buy it at the weekend.
Did you like the" teardrop explodes"? Reward was a great single by
them, but when julian went solo" trampoline "is his best song todate.
Do you know if the album or cassete is as long as the CD?

His new album is very good, I was quite surprised because I've never
been a real Cope fan over the years. Beautiful Love isn't very typical
of the album though, he's doing some dates soon, two at each venue, the
    sets differing widely.

Hope to buy his new C.D. this weekend. Has anyone ever heard of a
compilation album released by Zoo records? It includes The Teardrop
Explodes, the Bunnymen, the Turquoise Swimming Pools, Cope himself and
other lesser known artists around Liverpool at the time? The album is
called "To The Shores of Lake Placid" and is well worth getting a hold
of. It also contains the song "Books" but it is sung by McCulloch and
    Cope this time.

Has anybody any views on his second solo effort, "Fried" ?
Does anyone know which Teardrop "B-sides" are on the "Piano" album and
how to get a hold of a copy?

    p.s. For those that didn't know, there's a Teardrops/Cope video out
called "Copeulation" with nearly all his vids on it.

By the way, I can't get "Bouncing Babies" by the Teardrop Expoldes

Bouncing Babies is on one of the Teardrop Explodes reissues, I'm sure,
and also as a B-side to one of the weaker 12" singles of the day. And

I've heard of it but never had the sense to buy it when I saw it.

Mostly a waste IMHO. "World Shut Your Mouth" was 1,000's of times better.

> Does anyone know which Teardrop "B-sides" are on the "Piano" album and

If "Piano" is the "new" Teardrops compilations ("Shag" being the old one),
I've seen it at Tower Records in NYC (village), so I'd try Tower London. I
think it had "Bouncing Babies" on it. The US LP/CD has it. Not sure how it
compares with the single version though. Early US copies of the CD on SKY
CLAD records don't have BB either.

I bought "Fried" when it was first released and had conflicting views
on this album. It has three or four good songs on it, the best being
"Me Singing". I also like "Bill Drummond Said" and "Holy Love". At
first I thought, well this is really imaginative, but after seeing
him waddle about with a Turtle shell on his back and reading some the
interviews he gave at this time I was a bit dubious about his
character. When I found out he was a little spaced out at the time, all
    was forgiven.
Anyway I like the album although its definately not his best.

P.S. If anyone remembers Troy Tate who was a member of the Teardrop
Explodes when the "Wilder" album was made; he released a couple of good
solo albums - [ Ticket to the Dark & Liberty... ] and they are both
excellent. I'm not sure if he's released anymore but would be
interested to hear if he has.

I've got a Troy Tate album at home. His voice is not unlike Leonhard
Cohen (sp?), but a lot more tuneful.

I can't remember which album I've got, but it contains a track about
men in Grey coats and blue coats and guns of opposite colours. It
doesn't often get played, but I have it on a tape in the car and
occasionally I dig it out and remember what a good album it is!

Yes, I have the poster too. Since it kept getting moved from one
location to the next when I was in college, it's pretty shredded
now and stuffed away in a closet somewhere.

I happen to love the song "Reynard the Fox," especially when he
did it live at the Club Lingerie (tiny dive in HWD) a few years ago.

Do you have Bill Drummond's album with the song "Julian Cope is
Dead" on it? I saw it several times, but for some reason never
bought it ($$$?). I regret that now. I heard the Jazz Butcher do one
of Bill's songs and it was really good.

Anyway, I think the newest album is Julian's best, I just wish it
were released here! And I can't wait till JC plays live on SNAP

'Autogeddon' is the third of the 'Peggy Suicide' trilogy according to the
Select I bought this morning which also helpfully explained that Peggy was
about environmentalism, Jehovahkill was about religion, and that Autogeddon
takes its name from the Heathcote Williams poem of the same name and subject,
the destruction caused by the internal combustion engine.

Oh yea, and didn't Cope look admirably bonkers on TOTP?! The perfect act to
annoy mums and dads all over Britain. Respect is due to TOTP for showing this
(I couldn't agree less with the previous noter about TOTP being crap). That
said, I did prefer Cope in his leather rock god phase. At least those songs

It was strange seeing him on TOTP.

I found myself thinking "What does he think he looks like?", until I
realised that that was exactly what my mom would have been thinking!

The song was forgettable, nothing special.

Can't believe the guy would ever write a book that was minimally
    comprehensible ;-)

Incidentally, I haven't heard his latest album either. Is he continuing
in the vein of his last 2/3 (i.e. more techno-based) or can we hold out
hopes of him returning to the 60s pop direction of "World Shut Your
    Mouth" and "Fried"?

Weird guy, but wheh he gets it right (e.g. "Strasbourg") he's tough to
    beat.

The book - Head On - is very interesting, and written in his style...
well worth getting if you are interested in Julian/Teardrops/early 80s
    late 70s Liverpool scene.

20 Mothers - 20 short(ish) songs, bit of a step back to more
straightforward tunes, and is a little hit n miss. Some of the trax
are sheer genius, but some are like Skellington outtakes. Buy it tho,
coz on the whole its very good.

I'm off to see the Drude in action on Wednesday evening in
Wolverhampton, and maybe London the week after. I was hanging out in
Avebury last week, but he wasn't around (tho there were whole load of
wierdy beardies celebrating the Autumn solstice).

The Archdrude was on good form Wednesday eve....

He always seems to be determined to have as much of a good time as the
audience. Right from the beginning he was chatting with the audience
and generally sending himself up. He did a three hour set, with an
    acoustic sess in the middle.

Anyone who knows the Civic Hall will remember the posters up around the
place saying 'no stage diving', only one person ignored this...the
drude himself. 'Gotta Walk' was when he first launched himself, the
chorus becoming 'gotta wa-umph' as he was turned upside down and his
legs flailed around in the air. Happily bopping at the front near the
end of the show, I looked up in the middle of 'World shut your mouth'
to see Copey flying down towards me. We kind of caught him...

He did a few old songs - Books, Bill Drummond is dead, Reward,
Passionate Friend, and a cool version of Sleeping Gas which was dragged
out a bit coz he decided to climb up into the balcony and go running
    around upstairs.

iT was a cool fun evening, the sort of show when everyone leaves
grinning. Try and catch him on this tour if you can.

Copey is playing a solo(ish) gig in Portsmouth on March 22nd, somewhere
called the Pyramid centre. Can't remember who the support is, a female
    singer I think.

Looks like its gonna be another evening of - One hour to drive to
Portsmouth, one hour driving in circles around Portsmouth wondering
where the hell I am, and getting to the gig just in time...

Nah, it's easy to find the Pyramid Centre. Into Portsmouth on the M275,
at the Roundabout at the end, go straight on, then right at the next
roundabout, straight over the next, straight on at the wacky junction
with lots of traffic lights (right is Historic Ships, left is the City
Centre), the second exit at big gyratory type thingey, straight over
next roundabout, straight over the one after that, left at the amusment
arcade then along the seafront to the pyramid centre. Easy really.

Nah, the first roundabout is at the end of the M275. You can only go left
or straight on. If you go straight on, there's a garage and cinema on the
right, then you come to another roundabout. At this one you can only go
left or right.
