    THE CARTOON Croydon

An excellent place to go for a bear with live music Thurs - Sunday have
good bands playing Mon - Wed they tend to have bands that are just
    starting out.

An excellent place to go for random ad-hoc adventure out one night

You could always venture North into Camden Town and check out the
Carnarven (sp?) Castle, just underneath the Bridge, next to the main
market entrance. This place has played host to a Friday night spot by
The Radical Sheiks for years. Well worth checking as well are the Poorboys
who play Saturdays now and again. They're so good I'm off to see them
tomorrow night (if the wife lets me). Lovely foot stomping Honky Tonk
    and Cajun.

Organisers of this superb entertainment are a few Hells Angels ( Camden
Chapter? :-) ) but don't be put off, just observe the golden rule of
not staring at their women!! The pub was renovated a while back, the
minus factor being the loss of decorative R&B memorabilia to the Angels
influenced bike memorabilia, the plus being the sawdust on the floor.
Small mercies indeed. Still, all this situated amidst North London's
buzzing Bohemia; what more could you ask for?

That's it. Better stop as I'm beginnng to sound like Judith Charmers.
Next week, Wish You Were Here visits another fine North London R&B
nightspot, The Torrington in North Finchley where you can find eveyone
from Alias Ron Kirvana to Wilko.

    Barry.

Thanks for reminding me Barry...if anyone wants to see sh*t-hot blues
guitar, check out Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters at the Town & Country
    May 5.

I've been going every Wed night to see him in Maynard and won't know
what to do when I can't have my weekly fix while he's in the UK.

Blimey, is the Torrington still going? I spent many an evening there
    during the 'pub-rock' era.

    Yep!

The Torrington still puts on bands and I think it's still the same
Irish chap who's been promoting gigs there for more than twenty years
now. Have'nt been there for a few months but I think it's still the
very much the same bunch from the last few years...Alias Ron Kirvana,
Ruthless Blues, The Hamsters, Wilko Johnson, Poormouth, Man and so on.
Apart from Friday and Sunday nights when they've got music the place
is'nt really worth going near as it's a Whitbread House.

    Barry.
