809.0. "Pet Shop Boys topic (mars? twix? flake?)" by IGETIT::BROWNM (SpacebassmanBrown) Wed Feb 27 1991 20:58

There is no Pet Shop Boys topic! Until now...

The latest news is that the next UK single release is a double a-side
containing a remix of `How Can You Expect To Be Taken Serously?' and a
Hi-NRG cover of `Where The Street Have No Name'!!!

If the later gets the radio play it will surely go to No1 (that would
    be their 5th).

    Other PSB news;

Pet Shop Boys listing in Music Collector mag. It's a big big and
    valuable list and I'm rich!

They're gonna tour in the summer.

`How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously?' went in and out of the
Hot 100 in the US and is available on import with many mixes. B-side
is `What Have I Done To Deserve This?' (Rip Off)

A Red Zone Mix of `So Hard' is also available on import. It has a
different sleeve and is difficult to get. (very)

It so happens(not willingly) Matty that I received the PSB:Seriously
promo 12" which is not my style, but on the B side of it there is a
cut called "Boring",and I must say that I like the mix.A nice surprise
    to me....;)

    Jan, (long timen no speak)

`Being Boring' was out here a couple of months ago and was released on
2 separate 12"s, including that Marshall Jefferson mix that is on the
promo you mentioned. I think it's OK, but I prefer the b-side `We All
Feel Better In The Dark'. This comes in a couple of dancable mixes.

Anybody heard the PSB version of "Where the streets have no names..."
(U2)? It's weird! I'm not slagging 'em off, just commenting! =;*)

I'm not a great fan of theirs, so I might be a bit prejudiced against
    them!

I wish I had it Matty, I just wanted to know so I can piss Mark off
(remember Mark?) because he always talks about not buying it when he
saw it in Picadilly HMV and went for the 12" instead, I told him he'd

mixed in is an old Andy Williams song, I haven't decided whether I like

The 12" of `West End Girls' is worth about 8 quid with picture sleeve
and in good nick, so he didn't do too badly.

I've not `Where The Street...' yet. Can't wait.

I've just heard it on the radio. Hmmm. If I didn't know it was a U2
song, I'd have thought it was a PSB original. Basically, it's yer
typical PSB Euro-disco; if you're into 'em, you'll like it, probably.

Gosh! I'm impressed! How can you like something when you've never heard
    it....?

To turn this around the other way, I could say I won't like (say)
Kylie's next single, but then *I* haven't heard *that* yet, have I? I'm
willing to give someone whose previous output I haven't enjoyed a
chance to redeem themselves (in my ears), in the same way as I won't
say I like (say) James' next single until I've actually listened to it.

Like George Michael said, 'Listen without prejudice'.

809.12ARRODS::WHITEHEADJIggy the IguanaMon Mar 04 1991 11:109
My music tastes are firmly fixed. If there's a group/singer that I
like, then I will like *any* songs they record. Likewise, if there's
   a group/singer I don't like, I won't like any songs they record.

Every song the PSB's have recorded has been excellent, along with
some other of my favourite groups. So anything they release in
the future will be excellent. I have complete confidence in them.

I used to think the same about the Pet Shop Boys. I used to love all
their b-sides, all the different mixes etc. But I've gone off them a
bit. Having said that I went to about 4 shops yesterday trying to get
the new single, but it seems to have been delayed. Has anyone seen it
    in the shops yet?

Has anyone been to one of the PSB concerts yet?
(I don't know if their tour has actually started in the UK?!)

I bought tickets for their concert in Rotterdam (Holland)
May 25th. I'm curious what the show will be like. I mean,
Chris and Neil probably won't run around the stage or
something. Is there a good lightshow? any dancers?

I still didn't buy Behaviour yet!

    Bye!
    Ilse.

    Matty,

    A little note for you:
Do you remember that I asked a friend of mine to order a certain
Madonna single for you in Sweden? (it was Burning up I think!)
Well, a few weeks ago she got the reply that it was temporarily (sp??)
sold out!! I'm very sorry, but she'll try it again the next time they
    order!
    Cheers!

809.15IGETIT::BROWNMA Ciccone YouthThu Mar 21 1991 21:1519
    Hi Ilse,

    Re: Burning Up, no worries!

There is a very good PSB interview pread over this and last weeks
Record Mirror. Basically the PSB's want the tour to be more over the
top than the last one! They arrive in the UK in June/July and have
added quite a few new dates to the original one at the NEC.

Behaviour is a pretty good LP, but it sounds out of date compared to
the rest of the music at the moment (ie. mainly Dance music). Having
said that, there are some very good songs on there, but all the lyrics
seem to be too vague, or too obvious. Still it's worth buying.

I'm waiting for the remix 12" of `Where The Street Have No Name' (not
on Behaviour) to come out. Has anyone seen or heard and new mixes?

    matty
809.16ARRODS::WHITEHEADJMuffin the MonsterFri Mar 22 1991 10:547
Well, I finally got to hear the new PSB single (Where the streets
have no name). Very excellent, but U2's version still stands out
as the best, but the PSB were wrong to cover such a song.

   The video is good too.

   J.
809.17IGETIT::BROWNMA Ciccone YouthFri Mar 22 1991 15:016
I listened to U2's version last night and it sounded so stale in
comparison. Maybe that's because I played the Joshua Tree to death
when that was out. I still prefer U2's version of `I Still Haven't
Found...' to the version by The Chimes.

to U2's,if so, you have one hell of a problem.

                    Neil.

    Neil,

If you can't beleive that anyone likes this record then I assume you
must think that there must have been some dirty dealings going on to
get it to No7 in the charts.

Seriously, I have many many of both U2's and PSB's records, but at the
moment I prefer the PSB version by far. Each to his own.

I rate both versions...

Pet Shop Boy's version is a bit tongue-in cheek. They're meant to be poking a
bit of fun at U2 for being so "revered".
I really disapprove of cover versions when a band try to copy the original too
much... Pet Shop Boy's certainly can't be guilty of that !

809.22ARRODS::WHITEHEADJLuego me has rechazadoMon Mar 25 1991 11:1514
I saw PSB on TOTP (what an *awful* programme) on Thursday. I didn't
know that Neil Tennant could dance!!!!

Incidentally, Neil seems to have a slight inconsistency in his
pronunciation of certain words. Most people from the North pronounce
"can't" as cant (with the 'a' pronounced as in hat) and most people
from the South pronounce it as 'carnt'. In "Where the Streets have
no name", can't is first pronounced can't (Northern-speak) and then
later in the song as 'carn't' (Southern-speak). I must admit that
when interviewed, Neil tries to speak very carefully and takes great
care in the pronounciation of words .

The song is definitely growing on me, I even went out and bought the
   cassette single.
809.23BEAGLE::WARDMon Apr 01 1991 17:576
I think it's clever of PSB to spot where U2 knicked the hook from
for Streets Have No Name - namely Can't Take My Eyes Of You.

Like Billie Jean and Do It Again ... subtle but they get away with it.

This morning I bought the "cassingle" of PSB's "Jealousy" with the
other track being their version of Sondheim's "Losing My Mind" which
PSB's produced for Liza Minelli in 1989.

Jealousy is well produced but the album ("Behaviour") version stands
out as being better, although maybe that's because my version in on
   CD! But....

PSB version of Losing My Mind is truly awful. I never thought I'd
say that about a PSB song, and it's not because I'm comparing it
to LM's version. Neil sings it all out of tune, out of rhythm and,
other people will say it's nothing new, he sounds a complete and
   utter prat.

Also, the other week I bought the Promotion Video with "Being Boring",
"Jealousy", "It's Alright" and a few other recent ones I can't remember
including "Where the Streets..." on. Quite good but it seems as if
they aren't putting as much effort into their videos nowadays.

I think the PSB version of `Losing My Mind' is quite novel. Neil
sounds all unsure and wobbly, which makes a change. Have you listened
to `That's My Impression' lately? (b-side of Love Comes Quickly)

I personally think they've gone down-hill "Behaviour" onwards. Why can't they
stick to making decent instrumentals like "In The Night" (Clothes Show theme),
- Neil Tennant's voice gets aggravating after a while.

The name of their compilation LP is going to be "Discography" ... bet that took
some thinking !!!

"Behaviour" got the best critical acclaim of their career . It's far
and away the most rounded and consistent L.P. they've made. The 12"
remixes of "So Hard" (and there are a lot of them) and "Being Boring "
are more than just rather good .
Certainly their more recent stuff is a hell of a lot better than the
sh*! on "Actually" . I am not a fan but I think the band sense of
humour has been on shining for lately as have their production
capabilities . So slag off the old stuff!

IMHO

I've always considered the 1st album to be their best. It's fresher and
well crafted and not tired and well produced. I found "Behaviour" a bit
pompous apart from "We All Look better In The Dark". I prefer them when
they're being a bit more honest about themselves and poking fun at their
lifestyle.

Well, Leonie picked up the 'best of' album yesterday. I've never been
too sure what I thought of them, but I really enjoyed listening to this
album. Most of the tracks I didnt know (out of touch, eh?), and I dont
really like the last two tracks (DJ Culture and something else),
I think DJ Culture doesnt really hit its targets, but Its a Sin is a

Time to blow the dust off this topic. Anyone else heard Alternative? I've only
bought the 'standard' Pets CDs, none of the remix stuff and no singles. So
Alternative is a great buy, as it duplicates nothing I've got. The only tracks
I knew are "I Want a Dog" - different to the "Introspective" version and
"Losing my Mind", the version Liza refused to have.

If you like the PSBs and haven't got everything, this is worth having. The
version I have also has a booklet where they discuss each track - entertaining
stuff.
