794.0. "Non-classic albums you'd like to forget" by WELMTS::GREENB (Is it heck as like) Tue Jan 22 1991 15:24

This is a companion to my other topic. It's a repository for all those
"I used to really love them but I don't know why because I can't listen
    to them now" albums.

A lot of stuff from my 'hippy' days has stayed with me, for instance
some of the Dylan, Doors, King Crimson, Henry Cow etc are all things I
drag out every once in a while, and which still say something to me.

However, recently I listened to something I really used to love at the
time (about 1973). This was Gong's 'Flying Teapot' lp. I can remember
well the spaced out feelings and almost orgasmic delight this one used
to bring me at the time, but now? I had to ask myself what I ever saw
in it, it's just such a load naive old nonsense, self-indulgent to the
    extreme, and plain boring.

    Not recommended. Oh well.

This is quite an admission but here goes, I remember my friends and I
whilst in our early teens being quite into Toyah (don't laugh), we even
went to see her. Anyway, I put on a greatest hits album of hers late
last year and I just cringed so much, I just couldn't listen to it.
This is obviously what adolescence (sp) does to you, it affects your
ability to judge what you are hearing =8*)

A lot of my old Yes/Genesis lps bring a flush of embarrasment, but the
absolute pits has to be 2112, by Rush. I have no idea how I can ever
    have enjoyed that record. Hmmmm....

Mikef, you techno pomp rocker!! Yes and Genesis indeed!!! I bet you
    listened to ELP as well!!!

Actually, The Yes Album is one that fits very well under the topic
title, but I will admit to listening to Supper's Ready or Selling
England about once every two or three years.

Any post-PG Genesis is, IMO, fodder for this topic from its day of
    release.

Bob, whaddya mean about 'Flying Teapot'. It's one of my all
	time faves !!

Agree about the 'Yes Album', 'Foxtrot' and 'Tarkus'. I havn't
listened to them for ages it seems. However 'Time and a Word'
gets a play now and again. Funny, it seems as if I have all the
'forgettable classics' so far. Anyone want a record collection,
	going very cheap ?!

I never want to listen to any of the following again, ever !!

A definite non classic album I would like to forget is the Lionel
Richie album with All Night Long on it, I don't possess it but it
infuriates me every time I see it or hear a track from it. The reason
being that it was never off our 6th form stereo and I hated it, in fact
after hearing Hello for the 761st time I loathed it, it used to drive
me up the wall ( in fact it didn't take 761 times for me to figure this
out ), it makes me shudder to think about it.

Other albums in this class are the soundtrack to Footloose and Queen's
Greatest Hits (only slightly more palatable) to mention just a few.

Why was I the only one in my 6th form with decent music taste =8*)

    Just to be different,

    How about Tchaikowsky's Pathetique?

I bought the CD on the strength of the 'popular bit' and really find
the music iritates me to the extent I find it difficult to listen to
the whole 45 minutes or so. It has the same effect as King Crimson's
21st Century Schizoid Man (which I happen to think is the ultimate
    heavy metal sound!).

When I was an obnoxious kid, I used to drive people crazy by playing
_Fragile_ by Yes. After a stint at Poly, it got beer poured all over
    it, scratched and generally abused.

For ages afterwards (about 5 years) I used to rave about how good it
was, even though I no longer had a copy (peniless student/DEC employee
    syndrome).

Finally I saw it going cheap in a bargain bin in somewhere like
Woolies, so I got a copy.

The hushed moment arrived. With suitable reverence I placed the
hallowed vinyl on the turntable. Lowered the tone-arm. Raised the
volume and sat down for a truly cosmic experience.

My God. Isn't that album a load of pretentious, twiddley, iritating
    c*&p.

Funny that, I still like some Yes, but that album just drives me nuts
    now.

Well after a very cursury glance through my LP's I've come up with the
    following gems.

"The Rime of the Acient Mariner." David Bedford.
   It's awful.

"All this and WWII." Various artists such as Helen Reddy, Keith Moon,
Tina Turner, Rod Stewart and it was written by Lennon and McCartney.
    Despite this it is crap.

"Ramones" by Ramones. I'm glad I bought the LP as its only by watching
the needle cross the clear bit that I know the tracks are changing.

"Live in Toronto." Plastic Ono Band. First side ain't bad. But side 2
well. The best description I can give is that it sounds like someone is
trying to pull Yoko's toe nails out. Honest and it lasts for 20 mins or
so but seems like 2 years.

If anyone does not believe me they can contact me via these notes and
I'll gladly lend it too em. But you have to promise to listen to the
    whole of side 2.

Some may wonder what made me buy the above. Well I used to work with
Barry O'Hagan-Nuff said. Sorry Barry only joking.

    Best regards,

Its nice to know there's at least one other sucker out there :-)

I brought -Stars End_ by Dave Bedford on the recommendation of a friend
who said that Mike Oldfield played on it. Wow, I thought. Well, its
    total junk, scrap vinyl, etc...

The aforementioned 'friend' gave _Rime of the Ancient Mariner_ as a
Christmas present. I gave him cauliflower ears :-)

...And without your guidance Barry I'm sure I would never have sampled
the delights of the critically aclaimed Mrs Mills death-metal crossover;
subtley entitled "Mrs Mills plays the songs of Satan's Penis". :-)

As for the Ramones debut, I must protest that this was a classic. Not nearly
as good as the double live album though which contains around 40 tracks most
starting with the ubiquitous "one, two, three, four...", except of course
"I Wanna Be Well" where Johnny (or was it Dee Dee, Joey, or Tommy?)
delivered the immortal lines "Well after that chicken vindaloo I wanna
be well!". Classic stuff and they all sound remarkably similar too, something
the Housemartins made a career out of.

I reckon the coveted Non-Classic album title must go to The Cult's "Electric".
Marvel at how a band could just change gear from Hippy Goth to Bad Assed
Biker Rock n Roll in one fell swoop. Somewhere along the way between "Love"
and it's successor Messrs Astbury and Duffy discovered Zeppelin and AC/DC
and the results are terrifying. Astbury thinks he's Morrison too, it'd have
been better had he chosen the same fate, and Duffy's lead guitar can only be
compared to a cat getting it's nuts caught in the chain set of a mountain
bike. Truly awesome stuff. Especially the old chestnut "Born to be Wild".
How to make a disgrace out of one's self. Ho! Ho!

Regards,

O'H.

I have to add my voice of protest over the shameful attempt at burying
the Ramones classic first album. Remains one of the finest ways of
staying awake on the freeway at 3am to this very day.

And as for the Ramones "It's Alive" ... It's only 27 songs, and it's
_over_ 57 minutes on the double album. Anyone remember the Rainbow? I
    was there that night.

27 songs only? My mind must be full of cobwebs. Still that means that
each song counts in at around 2.11 minutes. Who remembers their 12"
singles; playing time accounted for about 1" of vinyl, the remaining
11" was just "run off". Surely the greatest waisters in the history
    of vinyl?

Oh and another Non Classic album must be the March Violets debut
"Natural History". It only has one good song, "Sanake-dance". The rest
    is just absoloute drivel.

I once heard a Napalm Death CD that had 58 tracks on it, including, I
believe, the aforementioned 1 second epic. A true classic, second only
to Andy 'XTC' Partridge's 'History of Rock & Roll' track which lasts
    about 7 seconds.

Talking of mega-epic concept singles, what about that first Clash
single (White Riot/1977)? Both songs clock in at under two minutes.
Then again, don'cha just love 'em?

    Non-Classic albums:

"Tubular Bells" must sound dated by now.
"Again and Again and Again" - The Best of Status Quo.

   that you'd like to forget...

   o Anything by Neil Diamond
o Crazy Horses - The Osmonds
o Dancing on a Saturday Night - Barry Blue
   o Blockbuster - Sweet
o Laughing Gnome - The Thin White Duck (no misprint)
o Nearly everything by Rod Stewart
   o Everything by The Eagles
   o Most sub-Velvet guitar bands
   o Eurovision song entries
   o Elvis musicals

...and I'm sure there's lots else.

I remember three albums specifically that I've played in the past year or so
that now sound so brutally bad that I can't believe I ever liked them.

I Robot The Alan Parsons Project
	Octave The Moody Blues
Illusions on a Double Dimple	Triumvirat

It's better to leave albums like this on the shelf, remembering them fondly,
than to dust them off and vomit.
