778.0. "British Invasion" by WMOIS::J_BLAQUIERE () Fri Dec 14 1990 17:33

I remember when the British Invasion hit the US in the 60's as an
exciting time in music. The music had a freshness that was lacking at
the time. Personal faves were the Hollies(excellent pop vocals), Searchers,
Yardbirds(intro to Jeff Beck), and the Kinks.
Are there some good oldie shows in the UK? Who are some of your
favorites? Are there some groups that were big in England but never
were popular in ths US? I'd be interested in what you have to say.

There were also groups that were a lot bigger in the US than in the UK.
Although Herman's Hermits were big here in the UK, from my
understanding at one time in the US parallels were drawn with the
Beatles. They never approached this popularity here.

Also, I suspect the Searchers were bigger in the US. I think they had
about 3 hits here and were never highly regarded by 'us teenagers'!. I
notice a lot of Searchers compilations available now on CD etc. This is
giving them a sort of belated cult status. I really don't know what
they had to offer in their day. They were just another group.

Although Herman's Hermits was one the most popular groups in the US at
the time, I feel that the Rolling Stones were second to the Beatles in
popularity. It does seem the Searchers were bigger this way as I
believe they had quite a few hits on the charts; probably around eight.
It must have been an exciting time musically in England. Were the
Beatles as popular in England as the US and what kind of a following
    did the Yardbirds have?

                                                      Thanks - Joe

True - Cliff Richards and the Shadows were not popular in the US. I
remember they had a couple of minor hits which were excellent songs.
They definitely deserved a better following. Another group I liked that
did'nt make it big was Them. Were any American acts popular in England
    at the time?

                                                  Thanks - Joe

Were the Beatles as popular in England as the US

Answer - undoubtedly yes! They were popular almost everywhere before
they made it in the US. This is in contrast to some British acts of
the 60's and later who were really more popular over there than over
    here eg. Elton John
