774.0. "UK_MUSIC Readers Poll 1990" by IGETIT::BROWNM (Mistake! I dod that on porpoise!) Thu Dec 06 1990 16:12

    The 1990 UK_MUSIC Readers Poll.

    Let's have a poll.

Step 1,	Decide of catagories for poll. eg, best male singer, most
    		fanciable female, worst PM etc.

    Step 2,     Here we have a choice;
    		a. I would like people to send me their votes and I will
compile them. This has 2 advantages. One is that no-one
will know the answers until I post the result, say after
Christmas. The other advantage is that I get to fiddle
the results and let Madonna win everything, including
most fanciable male, best group etc.

Step 3,	I or someone else compiles the result and posts them on
this conference. I say someone else - I mean if I get
run over by a bus - it nearly happens every day, I swear!

But first, what do ya think? What catagories?

    Apart from the normal catagories I reckon we should have the following;

`Next big thing' - Stone Roses etc.

`Favorite fashion item' - Flares, Doc Martins, Jesus sandalls etc.

`3 most memorable things about the year' - removal of the Berlin Wall,
the Stone Roses, Madonna at Wembley, lost virginities etc! That's
twice I've mentioned this in this conference. For those of you who are
Freudian types, I didn't lose mine this year!!! But all females
aged between 18 and 24 can apply, there's still time! ;-)

I also reckon instead of having favourite song, we should all pick 3, 5
or 10 of our favourite songs - there have been so many.

Jan, Yeah, anybody's. The more input the fairer the result.

BTW, my motives for doing this are purely fun related. It IS another
list topic, but hopefully we shall get some funny comments and some
    interesting results.

Why don't we all just make up topics as we go, rather than compiling
results? And keep everything to one reply. Sounds nice n vague to me.

    >Worst single - That one where Suzanne Vega dum-de-dahs all the way
    through.

So THAT'S who does that obnoxious piece of doo-doo. The very first time
I heard it I couldn't believe anyone actually released something
that wretched. From then on whenever that dum-de-dah started up
I immediately started punching the "next station" button, so, I never
    found out who did it.

    Thanks for solving the mystery,

OK...lets put some goodies in here for that year they are already
    calling '1990'...

LP of the year - Extricate, The Fall
Single - Glider ep, My Bloody Valentine, all on you(perfume) - Paris
Angels (ok, I know thats two)

    Highlights:
Reading Festival, Cure at Crystal Palace
    		Meeting Stuart Potter
    		Looking forward to visiting Ed

    Lowlights
    		Not visiting Ed
    		Stuart Potters haircut

Song that most made me want to take my trousers off:

joy in repetition - Prince (from Graffiti Bridge)

    Favourite (worst) shirt:

Only one contender - Bob Green, come on down!!

Accent most dificult to cope with after a pint or two - That man Stuart
    Potter!

    Best exploding car - Mine!

collection, so who cares. I'm trying hard to think which I detest most
    - tedious rap records, or American style 'soft rock' (leather jackets,
clenched fists, anguished expressions, no talent). I think the latest
New Kids single has to be the pits for me.

Record that most ought to be turned into a flowerpot -

    thing...

Singer who I would most like to invite home to meet mother -

    		Maria Mckee.

If I think of more later...

774.22WELMTS::GREENBComes but once a yearFri Dec 21 1990 17:266
Well, Rod, it might have helped us choose to be fickle if we'd actually
had some 'product' to ignore. As it is, I won't be getting too excited
about their next record, whenever they actually deign to enter a
    recording studio, that is.

774.23CHEFS::PRICETFrom the global village....Fri Dec 21 1990 17:419
I don't think they are allowed to record at the moment due to contract
wranglings. I seem to remember that they were trying to wriggle out of
their contracr with Silvertone who have them signed up for 35 years!

Should have read the small print or did they and are they just being
    greedy now

You're right, they didn't exactly do a lot here either one gig on an
island that nobody has ever heard of which was reputedly awful and a
couple of other stadium type things. I reckon the reason they are so
quieton all fronts is that they have no decent new material, time will
    tell no doubt.

I have this question I wanted to ask for a long time. Probably poorly related
to this topic.

Am I the only one to find that "Dub be good to me" is a rip off of "Guns of
Brixton" from The Clash ? I mean the music (not the voice).

Didier
774.29YUPPY::FELLMThu Jan 03 1991 12:558
Apparently not!! I understand that Beats International were
sued by The Clash for nicking their music on this one. Don't
know if they were successful in proving this though.

All that aside 'Dub be good to me' was a brilliant single.

Similarly, Vanilla 'Ice Ice Baby' Ice sampled a bit of the Queen/Bowie

but haven't heard anything more definite than that - does anyone know
    any more?

Apparently, Norman Cook, the man behind Beats International, wrote
the song as a tribute to The Clash, but unfortunately it slipped his
mind to ask them if they had any objections. Suspicious? Not at all..

774.32My favourite's of 90's.IGETIT::BROWNMSpacebassmanBrownFri Feb 01 1991 15:5191
Here's some of my favourite records of last year. There are a few
missing, it was a great year for music (aren't most) and it's difficult
to remember so many. Also there have been some great records I've
bought this year, or records that I had not heard before but come from
    previous years.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hardcore Uproar -	Together
This has got to be one of the best House records ever. Bleeps, great
samples and a great rhythm track. They also use it on Sportsnight!

  Scarlet Beautiful -	The Beloved
Hi NRG stuff. Should have been a single but stayed on the LP for some
     reason.

All On You (Perfume) -	Paris Angels
Sounds similar to New Order's `Temptation'. Great acid bass noises mixed
with jangly guitar, Funky Drummer rhythm and a few vocals for good
     measure.

  Fascinating Rhythm -	Bassomatic
Great dance track with nice sounds all the way through. Nice vocals
     too.

The Storm -	World Of Twist
A bit like the Paris Angels, but with whirling organs and whispery
vocals. The song is as catchy as anything the Beatles every did.

  She's A Rainbow -	World Of Twist
The b-side of the above. It's a Rolling Stones song, but this version
has all the right beats and keyboards to make is sound fresh. More
     pounding acid bass noises.

This Is How It Feels -	Inspiral Carpets
Great moody song, but it's so catchy. More organs - I suppose I have a
     thing about organs. :-)

Enjoy The Silence -	Depeche Mode
I love the choir voice on the keyboard the use for the chords. So good
     it's unbelievable.

The Only One I Know -	The Charlatans
A mixture of the Stone Roses and the Inspirals. This was the best of the
     typical Manc records IMO.

  Kennedy -	The Wedding Present
Again, dead catchy. Very noisy with great Yorkshire sounding vocals.

Made Of Stone -	Stone Roses
Dead dead catchy. Came out ages ago, but I only bought it this year.
Playing this reminds me of how I felt when the new decade started - ie.
     very positive.

  Waiting For Her -	A-ha
A bit like U2's `With Or Without You' and at least as good. I prefer
Morton (Hamstead? ;-)) Harket's vocals though. Great arrangement with
     strings pianos, the works.

Pro Gen (Paul Oakenfold Mix) -	Shamen
This would have been a brilliant instrumental track on it's own, but the
rap is so good. The guy sounds good, but best of all are the lyrics.
     They're all about being positive
"The Shamen are a new generation who are provin', you can be what you
want to be, let your mind and your body and your soul be free..."

Groove Is In The Heart -	Deee-Lite
Everyone's heard this. It just shows the originality you can achieve
     while sampling old records.
