747.0. "<* IRISH ROCK BANDS *>" by ESSB::PBOYLE () Mon Oct 08 1990 18:32

    Hi..
Im interested in discussing and/or hearing about new Irish Bands.
I recently got offered the chance to do DJ and make a point of playing
Irish rock bands. The bands I play at the moment are
The Stunning, The 4 of us, Something Happens, Emotional Fish,
The Little Fish, Aslan (alas no longer around), That Petrol Emotion
(R.I.P. aussi), The Undertones, Van the Man and of course U2....
Im interested in hearing about these W.R.T. gigs, tours etc
    Any other good bands around?
I heard a recommendation of The Energy Orchard.....anybody know
    about them?

You lucky, lucky bas+**d!!!!	:-)

I lie awake at nights dreaming of having my own radio show.

May I recommend a couple of other well known Irish bands to add to your
playlist:

	- The Hot House Flowers (I don't care if they're not fashionable
	  anymore).
	- The Black Velvet Band (Why not?)
	- Light a Big Fire (Yeah!)
	- Galway's Toasted Heretic (sp?)
	- Auto Da Fe ("All is yellow, hot hot hot", dated but fun)
	- How about some established names?(Gary Moore. Thin Lizzy. The Rats)

I'm not very well clued in on the Irish (read Dublin) music scene, but there's
lottsa good bands out there (The prayer boat? - OK I'm clutching at straws).
Why not play demos? Pickup a Hot Press.

On the other hand, I don't see why you should concentrate on just Irish bands,
I'd rather hear "Don't let me down gently" by the Wonderstuff than "I still
haven't found what I'm looking for" by U2 ANYDAY! I also hope that you're not
going to concentrate on singles.

When and where are you on? I'd love to hear ya. I promise not to say
anything uncomplimentary about a show in here.

P.S. When did That Petrol Emotion break up?

That Petrol Emotion are playing here in a couple of weeks so they can't
    have split up.

Didn't one of the guitarists leave That Petrol Emotion recently? This
may have fuelled (geddit? arf arf) rumours of a split.

747.7ENERGY ORCHARD ALBUM REWIEWESSB::PBOYLEWed Oct 17 1990 19:0433
in truth i did not fully make myself clear...
i am dj in a nightclub in galway (ireland).
no mixers, no beat per minute problems, no effects....just music
    i play for student audiences....
    Sorry
Been busy and have had time last night to listen to the energy orchards
    album..called Energy Orchard
It is a bit Hot House Flower-y. The band are from the North (ie
Northern Ireland). Unlike the Four of Us, however, THIS band deal with
    the problems up there...
My brother pointed out the lean towards religious images throughout the
album, but he is just back from Medugorde in Yugoslavia where the
Virgin Mary is allegedly appearing, so i initially ignored him.
However, there is quite a number of one word references to religous
    things...
I keep thinking I hear uileann pipes on the album. Theres piano used a
la Hot House Flowers. This annoys me coz I dont much like them.
The album is good.....not dance material. The message of the record
is thankfully devoid of any Nationalistic or Loyalistic rhetoric.
The two songs on the album that stick in my mind are
Belfast - coz Im a sucker for acoustic guitars
Somebodys Brother. This song has a great chorus but slows down
annoyingly so I cant play it at the disco.

        "Somebodys Brother, Somebodys son......
"My people, your people, your people, our people
Searching for peach in a place where theres none."

Prepare to hear more from these guys.....even Van Morrison helped out
on this album (which reminds me of another great song on it)
