696.0. "St Etienne" by IGETIT::BROWNM (En-ger-land!) Tue Jul 03 1990 16:05

    Can anyone tell me about the St Etienne single. I don't even know what
    it's called.  It's brilliant!

    Matty, do you mean "Only Love Can Break Your Heart"? I've got the
    Andrew Weatherall remix of this and it's pretty infectious. The
    singer in the second half sounds a bit like Lindy Layton.
    For Neil Young purists, this is nothing like his original, so don't
    worry about a Candy Flip-like cover. St Etienne clearly do it their
    own way.

    The flip side is the Official St Etienne World Cup theme. I'll take
    Pavorotti over this.

    Cheers,
    	George

696.2I didn't know it was a cover.IGETIT::BROWNMGazza - football machine!Thu Jul 05 1990 21:415
    That's the one. I'm getting real frustrated 'cause I can't get to a
    record shop!

Reviving an oldish topic here,

Heard "Kiss And Make-up" which I really like, and am wondering if there are any
limited releases for this.

Cheers,

Peter

    I've seen a remix 12" advertised in RM and NME.

    I bought it on Monday and think its brilliant, its very clean and
    uncluttered which I like. I suppose I'm going to have to try and get
    the remix now although it might not be as good if they fiddle with it
    too much.

    How does it compare to the 1st single?
696.7CHEFS::PRICETDead Dead GoodWed Oct 10 1990 15:396
    I didn't hear their first single, this one is very layed back in feel
    though, its a very clean and uncluttered mix, it was on Jukebox Jury on
    Sunday and everyone really liked it.

    I wasn't all that impressed with the bits of "Foxbase Alpha" that I
    heard, but is their new single a brilliant pop song, or what ? Where is
    it in the Gallup chart - deserves to be No. 1 in my opinion.

       Oooh yes, "You're in a Bad Way" is irresistible - sentiment and
       singing style remind me of Deborah Harry. Is there an album?
       Is "Foxbase Alpha" any good? Nice cover.

NME sez there's a new LP soon.

    New LP -is out at the end of the month, I think, and is meant to be
    better than Foxbase Alpha, which had some good bits.

    Official - I'm totally in love with Sarah Cracknell.

    The new CD "So Tough" arrived in the post yesterday morning, and I've
    listened to it once so far. Seems pretty good, a mixture of catchy pop
    tracks, and some more vaguely Primal Scream/Orb-ish material (if that
    means anything).
