619.0. "so true, funny how it seems...." by UTROP1::BORRIAS_I () Wed Feb 28 1990 19:05

    Hi there reader!

Via this topic I'd like to get in touch with Spandau Ballet
"fans". I can't find a topic about them, so I thought it was
    my 'duty' to start one!
I have liked Spandau for about 5 years now, and I'm looking
forward to reading what other people reckon about SB.

    Every comment is welcome!!!!

    Cheers,

    Ilse.

I have not actually heard their music for quite awhile so you could
probably disregard that...The Gang of Four used to like them so I
s'pose they can't be all bad.

I read an interview last night (while eating tea). The film that the
Kemp brothers starred in will coincide with a tour, a single and an LP.
No names, title or dates. Sorry.

They haven't been the same since they took off their blouses!

Great first album (or was it the second?) - one of those albums that
I love listening to once every 6 months. The first side is really upbeat and
danceable, the other is really mellow (and a bit overproduced - lots of sounds
of water dripping, etc). Was it Diamond? - the one where they seem to be
standing in an arctic cave on the cover, complete with bright red noses from
the cold.

But "Shattered Dreams Reflect Elation, Reformation, Reformation"? Come on,
what a pose!

    Hi Ilse,

I think a real SB fan knows enough when he sees
"so true, funny how it seems". I did anyway.
Last December and January of this year I went to their
concerts in AHOY-Rotterdam. They are very good when they
play live. At least they do when they are in Holland.
    What about other countries?

PS: Matty you know a lot about them for a non-liker!

    Sorry folks,

I opened this conference to talk about Spandau Ballet, not some
other group!! By the way, concerts in Holland are good; especially
when they are held in Ahoy' in Rotterdam!

    Anyway, about Spandau:
Does anybody in England know if the new single has been released
there already? It's called "crashed into love"!
    Honest answers please...!!!!

    cheerio!
    Ilse.

P.S. Erna, did you finally managed to enter yourself into the
         beautifull world of "notes"???????

    Hi,

Yes, I am finally into notes and enjoying it very much.
As yourself I was wondering about the subject of this
    topic as well.

    So Spandau it is:
Does anyone know when the movie in which the Kemp-bros
    are will be released?

    Happy noting!
    Erna

619.18No news for me!!!UTROP1::BORRIAS_IWed Mar 14 1990 18:2210

I already know when that is!!!
Actually, I've heard it from the guys themselves!!: Gary and Martin
Kemp. The premiere will be at April 22nd 1990.
So you see, there aren't many things that I don't know about them!!

    Bye,

When the Spands were in Tax Exile in Ireland, they used to drink in the bar in
Trinity College, where I was a student. Reputedly, they stopped coming there
because they weren't getting any attention (ie chicks)!
619.20I didn't know that one!UTROP1::BORRIAS_IThu Mar 15 1990 12:4522
    Hi,

    You're right, I didn't know that! Ta!
How long ago was that? As you probably know (?), the Spands are
now all (exept for 1) "happily" married, and some are even a
    father!
I know they like a good drink (....), but nowadays when they are
on tour and having a party afterwards, almost all their families
and wifes are there as well! A real happening actually, very nice!
I don't think that they now will leave a bar if there aren't any
"chicks". Only when the bar is out of lager ..... ;-)
As long as there's enough to drink!

Do you have any more interesting stories?
Do you like Spandau yourself? Read note 619.0 to see what I mean!

    Cheers!

    Hi Matty,

About the release; yesterday, I looked through the "No.1"
(yes yes we have that one in Holland), and there
was a review of the single in it! So.... I also saw an advert
of the single in the "Smashhits" a couple of weeks ago!?!?!

Thanks in advance for letting me know as soon as you know
    anything!! Ta!

That's strange, in Holland we are a week behind England, so it's
the one from last week! Adam Ant was reviewing the new singles,
maybe you know it now?? We get the Smashhits a day after you get
it! I used to buy it almost every week, (at times when Spandau
was "very" popular, see) I like the magazine though!
It has costed me loads-a-money!! But I don't mind!

    Try to get your refund!!!

    Hi there!

Can you remember the titles?? The one from '89 is probably "be free
with your love", I have that one on CD single already. Do you remember
the other title?? If it's "empty spaces" I have it on CD-single
as well, (I even bought that one in London's HMV at Leicester Square!),
but, if it's titled "crashed into love", I'm interested!!!
Especially if it's a limited edition, a gate-fold or so! You see,
being a fan, I sort of collect these things. So,..... If it's a
special edition of "crashed into love", I would really appreciate
it if you could buy it for me! Maybe I can do something in return
for you?? Just tell me okay?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
    Actually, I'm interested now! :-)
You see, apart from the fact that it's just the 7", it's a collectors
item for us here in Holland, because that single hasn't even been
released here!! I think it's very very very nice of you if you can buy it
for me, and (I'm a bit ashamed to ask..), if there still are a few
copies, can you buy 2 please?????? I now a friend of mine would
love to have it as well!!! You MUST tell me how I can pay you, or
maybe buy something for you???? Actually, the only English money
I have at home are a few 20p coins.......!! The internal mail idea
    is a good one!
We'll talk about the other details later okay?

BTW London's Time Out had a feature on that new Kray Brothers film. The

Ehm...... London's Time Out, is that that magazine that you can
get anywhere and tourists can get ideas out of it??????
Interesting as well......!! Yes, the Kray Brothers are the Kemp
brothers!! I'm so curious what this film will be!!! The premiere
in London is April 22nd, but unfortunately in Holland it will be
    this Autumn!!

    Matty,
OK, So you are a Madonna fan!! I've seen some notes from you,
concerning her, before!! Anyway, I'm going to the shops in a few
minutes, and I will see if I can find her new single! I haven't

two albums on LP and the last one on CD!!!!

    Talk to you later!!
BTW, what would you like to know about the last single????

your pick of cinema, theatre, music etc on offer. It may even be on
sale in Utrecht's Hoog Catherijne (corner papershop near the trains).
Otherwise if you want the article I could sent it through

Ofcourse you could sent it through "I.M." !!! ......ahem....
What can I do for you in return?????

to be! Don't get me wrong - I'm not religious or anything.

What I want to know aboy the Madonna single is, what's the b-side,
what's the cover like, what's on the 12" etc? Maybe you'll get it in

is not letting me down now.........

    Bad news Ilse,

Somebody bought the remaining copies of `Crashed Into Love'. I'll try
and hunt it doen somewhere else. There shouldn't be any problems.
(come on Mike, own up!). They did have 2 copies of `Empty Spaces'. Is
    that any good?

    Matty,

I guess it was bad luck eh?
Anyway, you don't have to go into too much trouble!!
(Gosh, are there really any SB fans left overthere????)
If the Empty Spaces singles were just the normal 7"'s,
don't bother, if they are gatefolds or so; I'm interested!!

About your "burning up" problem: I thought it might be a good
idea to phone her record company here in Holland!!! What's
her record company? WEA, CBS, EMI, RCA,......???

    Bye,
    Ilse.

It's Sire (part of WEA), but the single is long since deleted.

I go to records shops all the time, so it won't be a problem looking
under the S section for a change. I'm after `Fools Gold' 12" by the
Stone Roses and that's in the S swection, so no problem.

Allright, I'll try to phone WEA today, I will let you know asap!
You'll never know what will come out of it, eh?

Did you find "Fools Gold"?? I love that one!!
Is it so difficult to get that one in England?

Bye and have a nice day,
    Ilse.

    I have `Fools Gold' 7" but I didn't buy the 12" because I didn't know
if I liked the Stone Roses. Now I have all the old 12" (except for `So
Young'), but can't get `Fools Gold 9.53'. But then I've only tried 3
towns so far. The record made either No6 or No8 in the Uk chart.

    Are Spandau successful over there?

    matty
619.57UTROP1::BORRIAS_IThu Mar 22 1990 13:4814
I had never heard of the Stone Roses before Fools Gold, but I read
a lot about them in this notes file! So I assume that they were
already succesfull!? But "Fools Gold" is great, maybe I'll buy
the CD single when it's in the bargain bin!!! har har!! (joke)

Spandau is not that succesfull as they were a few years ago!
In '87 they managed to get 6 sold-out concerts here. (8000 people
each night). This current tour, they played in Holland twice, one
night wasn't even sold out! The Through the barricades album was very
succesfull, so were Parade and True. The last one didn't do too
    well....(I think it's very good!).

    Ilse.

    Hi Isle,

I've found it! I bought you the 12" (2 copies in picture sleeves).
50p each!!!!! The tracks are `Crashed Into Love' (same version as the
single I suppose) and 2 live tracks including `Through The Barricades'.

Send me a mail for suggestions on how to send these on.

    I'm glad about that!
