614.0. "Jazz Radio" by SHAPES::FIDDLERM () Fri Feb 23 1990 16:25

Jazz FM starts broadcasting to Greater London on March 5, on 102.2 FM.

They are already putting out test transmissions, and must have a good
transmitter because I can pick them up on my car radio here in
    Basingstoke!

The station will be devoted to Jazz, Blues, and associated sounds, and
providing they don't wimp out into the mainstream, should provide some
    good listening.

Anyone else out there into Jazz, esp my man Miles???

    not very close then.

Does anyone like Lou Rawls "At Last"? Its jazz/blues/soul, with
guest artists such as Ray Charles and David "Fathead" Newman on
    sax. Excellent.

Yep, I can go for some jazz, but I feel it's such a big field I
don't know really what to listen to. Having grown up with pop/rock,
that is the kind of music that gives me that ol' gut feeling best,
(I just love them geetars best) but in the jazz field I go for
slightly left field artists like a bit of Miles, Coltrane, Monk,
    Lester Bowie etc.

    Me too....

I started listening to jazz at college and now I hardly listen to
anything else! My favourites are Miles, Jaco, Brecker, Metheney
but lately I've been getting into big band stuff like Maynard Ferguson.

What a pity this country is a jazz desert!!

I've always been a bit nervy of Ronnie Scotts - do they have a dress
code? Or just a cash code!

Jazz FM sounds great but why oh why oh why do the cruddy DJs get
bought up by the fledgling stations (perhaps a partial view)?

In the distant days when I used to listen to Capital, usually under the
car fixing fings, I used to wish Roger Scott would not take holidays
as they always got Peter Young in. And aghhhhh he shows up on Jazz
    FM.

Why when GLR took on the Radio London mantel did they have to engage
tent modelling Janice whatsit - can't keep her gob shut and opines
on and on and on and on?

    And it's repeated everywhere.

Yes, they start with great enthusiasm and promise, it's just the
voices between the music that cods it up.

Gimme someone with a brain who is interested in the music not a
motor mouth who thinks the music is an interfering diversion from
    his own self agrandisement.

I think I'll start a note called "Get it owf ya chest".

Jazz FM seems very inconsistent. Some very "middle of the road"
stuff is being got away with. I wish they'd mix it up a bit more.
At times you can go at least 5 or 6 slushy soul numbers before
you come to anything remotely resembling jazz. I hate the way
the say "the jAAAAZZZ station". It's far brassier and bolder
than I expected. Most of the dj's just don't sound like Jazz p
eople (whatever that means). I must admit that most of my listening
has been "daytime" . What's their evening line-up like ?

As far as Jazz being a vast scene to begin to get to know. I think
the best lp for a discerning rock listener with little knowledge
of jazz is probably "Kind of Blue" - Miles Davis. It's very
accessible, but at the same time a very sophisticated and revolut-
    ionary jazz record.

     Richard

Kind Of Blue is one of those records everyone should own, whether you
think you like jazz or not. It is sheer genius from start to finish,
one of the best albums ever made.

I agree about the slushy stuff, seems to be a lot of latin type things
going round also, but I haven't listened to the evening shows. Are there
any shows covering areas like Bitches Brew, and all that Fusion stuff? And
why are the tickets for Miles Davis in June so @$#%#$@# expensive???
