612.0. "The Beloved" by WOTVAX::MOOREP (Leslie Crowther, Come On Down !) Thu Feb 22 1990 16:17

Just bought The Beloved's "Hello" on CD. I must admit that the single starts to
annoy a bit with that never-ending list of names, and really bought it for the
other mixes of the single as I think the music is great.

CD single features 3 mixes in addition to normal single and I can thoroughly
recommend it.

Searched for the Album, released on Monday, but HMV sold out. I think I should
really wait to here what the next single sounds like, or until the album is
reviewed in Q magazine. Has anyone heard the album yet ?

I have the first single (`The Sun Rising'), that's pretty good.

I read the review of their next single, which really put it down. But
it did say the LP contained some good tracks, and that they sounded
like New Order. That's indication enough for me to put it on my wanted
    list.

Didn't realise "Hello" was their second single.

Yeh, the covers are different - dead way out man !

In last weeks NME Gedge stated that he felt sorry for the Beloved because they
have tried to get chart success with so many different styles .. he reckoned
if they didn't have the chart hit with "Hello" their would have went thrash!

I looked in the local Woolies last night for mega bargains ... nowt!
Though I did get a free Buzzcocks CD because I bought 4 other CDs, this was
from an American company called "Ed and Mays CD Giveaway Store" in the Rosslyn
area of Boston ... check it out!

Matt, thanks for that last bit of info...Must get that tomorrow providing
they're not sold out.

Bought the album on CD today (no extra tracks sob, sob, sob.)
It is a reet mixed bag. I agree when they say its something along the lines
of New Order and Pet Shop Boys (very pianoey in places). The second track
features a Human Leaguish sounding girl and the track Scarlet Beautiful has the
lead singer putting on his guttural voice, sounding remarkably like Holly
Johnson.

On the whole, I'm not disappointed with this.....yet !

612.10Good Old Stuff !!WOTVAX::MOOREPI hate having to balance my cheque book !Thu Mar 15 1990 11:4027
Managed to get the original CD single of "Your Love Takes Me Higher" yesterday
which contains much better remixes than the ones featured on the re-release CDS
(original cover features a group photo - how they used to look!, the re-release
a drawn hand...in that style again!)
Original CDS has the track "Paradise" which I think is really really good.
I believe this was originally released in 1989 and flopped.

Also quite surprised to see another CDS by the band from 1988 which I just had
to buy! The band name then was just simply "Beloved" rather than "The Beloved".
The main track on this is "Loving Feeling" (not on the new album) which was a
real pleasant surprise. I features a girl singing, and frankly its impossible to
keep your feet still listening to this one. Second track on this is "Acid Love"
which has voice-overs making it sound rather like an acidic version of Yello.
Third and final track is a 6 min+ remix of "Loving Feeling which is exceptional.
Incidentally, this track begins with someone snorting something!

I really rate this band. I've got the feeling a lot of credit is also due to
their producer Staveley-O'Duffy. They are extremely talented in the way they
can come up with tracks in such completely different styles.

[Thanks goes to Craig Harris for telling me about these two early CDs, on sale
at Hott Waxx in Warrington]

Band playing at the Hacienda soon........

612.11How long has this band been going !WOTVAX::MOOREPI hate having to balance my cheque book !Mon Mar 26 1990 20:328
Just seen Adrian's Record Store catalogue. Found out that Happiness is not their
first LP! They must have spawned quite a few singles from this LP "Where it is".
"This Means War", "Surprise Me", "Hundred Words" and "Happy Now" all listed.
Never heard of any of these.

On ringing the store, however, all are deleted !!! So now I'm angry that I have
found out they exist yet I can't get them.

612.12New release !WOTVAX::MOOREPJust for a laugh!Mon May 21 1990 22:506
"Time After Time" released today in all usual formats and also a limited
edition 7" pic disc in 3D sleeve.

This isn't their strongest track, but nevertheless, should do well.

612.14Yehhh!!!WOTVAX::MOOREPJust for a laugh!Tue May 22 1990 19:1713
Yeh - it surprised me when they released Time After Time because there are much
stronger tracks on the album like the last two. Methinks they will release the
last track at Christmas time because of the sleigh bell intro.

Scarlet Beautiful would have been a better single. Sounds a bit like Holly
Johnson...but much better... a a brill intro...

Managed to get an early 12" at Our Price in Manchester:
Surprise Me/Having Fun/Forever Dancing- main track features a bit of sampling
from Madonna's Holiday... cheek or what....

Don't you think "Don't You Worry" is a bit wimpish ???

Still think "Hello Dolly" is the best mix they have done to date.

612.17IGETIT::BROWNMTechnoterribleTue May 22 1990 21:257
I like Don't You Worry, but dislike Hello Dolly! Bloody good LP
though. I reckon they could be the new Pet Shop Boys. Whatever
happened to the Pet Shop Boys? I've looked for some early 12"s but
    can't fond any.

More on Jon Marsh working with Erasure...

Apparently he was asked by them to choose any song from their back-catalogue
to remix... supposedly just for club use.

Methinks Mute are planning a remix album of Erasure's greatest hits.

612.23Rat hole, sort of.IGETIT::BROWNMEn-ger-land!Thu Jun 28 1990 16:5324
They've already done that, well sort of. ie The 2 Ring Circus.

I hate it when they put out these remix LP's. The only 3 good remix
LP's have been PSB's `Disco', which was only #3.49 when it came out,
and Madonna's `You Can Dance' 'cause it was all joined together (making
it good for parties) and contained a great new track ("Spotlight"),
though the price was too steep. Then there's the "2 ring Circus" by
Erasure which wasn't anything spectacular except for the fact that the
vinyl version came as 2 45rpm 12", and the CD and cassette contained 9
extra live tracks, though these had already been released on the 3
    "Circus" 12"s.

Just for posteririty I'd like to say, PSB's "Disco" contains a track
called "In The Night" which has since been used as the theme music for
the Clothes Show, and also "Paninaro" which was released on 12" only in
Italy and made No1!!! Great tracks both.

Then the Erasure LP. On side 'd' there are 3 orchestral versions on
som slow LP tracks that are really worth listening to. Great
arrangements by Flood (a Mute person). You can only admire Erasure for
    this.

    RE-2. I don't like Imagination, especially after I say them do `Body
Talk' live at some Italian festival last year. I think it was the
supposed to be the new version, similar to that on their remix LP.

    RE. last 2.
I demand to know why the Beloved single hasn't sold! There's no
    justice.

Just managed to get hold of the original release of Your Love Takes Me Higher
(1989). This features three really good mixes which I have never heard before:
The Pod Went Pod Mix, Magic Juan's Sex Mix and a DJ mix...
...Still trying to track down some of their really early stuff when they were
a four-piece.

I got the re-release 12" and wasn't impressed with any of the 4 mixes,
nor the mix on that RM EP either. I DO like the normal 7" version
    though.

To be honest I'm not into any of the mixes on that tape you did me, but
I just like the plain songs. I really like Scarlet Beautiful. That's
got to be in my top ten songs of the year, maybe the top 5 even!

Matty's already announced the new single "It's Alright Now" available on 29th
October. Unfortunately there will be no remix 12".

There's a new LP out in November called "Blissed Out" which contains various
remixes, mixes and hard to obtain tracks. 8 tracks on the LP, 11 on the CD and
16 on the cassette.

Also a video containing the clips from "Hello", "Time After Time"(proper version
ie. "dirty" version !), "Your Love Takes Me Higher", and "The Sun Rising".

Anyone managed to track down the US 12" of "Sun Rising" on Atlantic Records
which contains 4 new mixes of "The Sun Rising" and 2 of "Up Up And Away" ?

Anybody heard of System 7 ? System 7 is a group made up of Steve Waddington and
various producers (Paul Oakenfold etc)

I bought the CD single of Habibi at the weekend and I'm quite impressed although
the vocals are a bit SEALish.

Has anybody heard the album, and if so would you recommend it ?

I think the most important point about System 7 is that the person
behind it all is Steve Hillage. the album got OK reviews (8 out of 10
ish). Buy it, then you can tape a copy for me ;-)

I didn't know there was a Beloved note. Tedious trivia follows...
