607.0. "Hidden messages" by GREBO::GURU (Only losers take the bus) Fri Feb 16 1990 18:25

 NME 17th February 1990

Launching a campaign that has shocked the music industry, a top BBC disc
jockey is claiming that pop groups like New Kids on the Block are spreading
"evil pro-drug propoganda".

Chris Morris - who has a show on both the BBC's Greater London Radio and BBC
Radio Bristol - had his attention drawn to "backward masking" by a Manchester
clergyman who played him a backwards recording of Queen's 'Another One Bites
the Dust'. Chris claims that the words "smoke marijuana" were clearly audible.

This led him to check out other records on the current BBC playlist. The
results he said are "horrifying". He now plays backwards recordings of chart
hits on his show and asks the audience to make up there own minds as to wether
or not the songs contain "drug messages".

"The real danger is that these messages are being put into the heads of young
kids," he claimed. "If you play certain segments of Madonna's 'Dear Jessie'
backwards you can hear her say quite clearly 'Have another sniff, you'll like
it'. This is clearly a cocaine reference."

Morris claims that hidden messages - common practice amongst overtly Satanic
heavy metal bands for over a decade - are now increasingly common in pop
singles.

"You know at the end of the chorus on New Kids on the Block's 'Hanging Tough'
where they go 'Ruff ruff ruff'? If you play that backwards it sounds like
'Hurry hurry hurry' - getting louder. And when they sing 'Hang Tuff' - spin
that backwards and it sounds like 'I snigger' or possibly 'Ice Nigger'. This
betrays the intelligence behind the hidden messages because it is a phonetic
pun . 'Ice' is the new form of smokable meta-amphetamine, and 'nigger' is
clearly either a gratuitous racist insult or a code word for a dealer.
Originally the 'Ice Nigger' was the dealer who sold you the stuff on the
block."

'Block' is also the slang for the drug Beta-blockers. Morris also claims that
the single contains the hidden message "Your days go whizzing when you're on
herion."

"Did you know," asks Morris "that Madonna's name backwards is Annodam? And that
Annodam is pig-Latin for the year of Damnation."

Other acts that are dabbling with hidden messages, according to Morris, are
Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue.

Morris's campaign has proved popular with listeners - many of whom have sent
him records which he intends to smash up on the air. His refusal to play those
records which he claims to be "tainted" has, however, brought him into conflict
with the management of GLR.

"It's limiting my field of choice as a DJ. I don't think I could ever play the
Carpenters again for instance."

On last Sunday's GLR show Morris claimed that he was visted by a dream by Karen
Carpenter who warned him that the song 'On Top of the World' contains the
backwards message "See that dog. Bite it's head off. Ha Ha Ha".

"The human brain is capable of picking up these messages," claims Morris. CBS
press officer Graham Hill was outraged by the DJ's attack on New Kids on the
Block.

"He should keep his lying, straw-sucking yokel mouth shut!" he said. "New Kids
on the Block were launched at an anti-drugs party and were solid supporters of
Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign. The group are totally opposed to drugs."

Oh come on! This is the funniest thing I've read in years!

Oh no! If you read that first line backwards, underwater it sounds
like 'Sorry my hamster is Lithunian' which is (as you obviously
know) Czech slang for 'Please provide me with 400 kg of Heroin
in return for my slightly used Skoda'.

	>>>	Louis Cipher.

Anyone see "Angel Heart", with Mickey Rourke and Lisa Bonet?

Rourke plays this private eye with a dark past, who gets hired by a
guy called Louis Cipher (Robert de Niro, or somebody?) to find a
        "missing person".

Devil worship abounds in this seedy, evocative and occasionally
        erotic film.

Anyway ... (don't read on if you want to see the film ...)

<spoiler>

... turns out Louis Cipher is really a personification of Satan,
and his name is a play on the name Lucifer (Satan's name).

What does all of this tell us? Beats me. Personally, I'd take it
with more than a grain of salt.

Another self-serving saviour out to protect the masses from themselves,
all the while garnering as much personal publicity as possible.
Chris Morris must be preparing to release a book on the subject
(as though more rain forest need be destroyed so that the back-masking
issue may be once again be flogged in print). Does anyone think that Chris
truly believes these paranoia induced delusions, or is he simply repeating
accusations nearly as old as audio recording technology itself in an
effort to boost his radio show ratings even higher? The music industry
is probably more shocked that a top DJ is spewing forth such stale allegations
well into the 1990's than anything else regarding his recent spate of publicity.
I guess some DJ's eventually do run out of original topics. Even if Chris is
just joking, and I suspect that he is, this has all "been done" many times
before.

In the base note it says that he now plays the records backwards
so people can make up their minds.

If he finds them so objectionable - why does he play them.

If I was the bossman of GLR I would be looking for another DJ because
    this one obviously needs help.

    Well,
I'm glad to see you've all taken this so seriously !

I'm surprized you consider this 'new' news. The Beatles started doing
backwards macking ages ago. Some people take it very seriously (esp in
the States) and tried to stop the sales of Albums. Some groups have
been needlessly hounded (why do you think ELOs last album was called
    Secret Messages).

Some groups (normally in the heavy metal arena) put backwards messages
on their albums for the 'shock' effect, hoping that somebody will
try to ban it, so they can get free publicity. (like Venom).

However, I'm surprised that no-body's mentioned the most famous example.
Try playing Queens "Another one bites the dust" backwards. The chorus
(repitions of the title line) *REALLY DOES* sound like "It's fun
to smoke marojahna" (See I can't even spell it !)

I still can't decide if this is an incredible coninsidence or the
    guy's having a joke.

I was looking for the note in MUSIC before responding here, but
since the DIR command isn't working on the file I can't find the note
without a great deal of work. Anyway, there is a good series of notes
in there about backwards masking and the like.

My view is that there isn't any scientific proof of the affects of
backwards masking that I know of. The folks who said it existed in
MUSIC failed to submit any studies that directly addressed backwards
masking. They did submit various results which could lead one to
consider the possibility of backwards masking being understood by
    people.

I find it all absurd considering that a lot of people have trouble
understanding muddled intentional lyrics. There's a whole topic on
lyrics that people can't understand in MUSIC.

If I ever run across the topic in MUSIC, I'll post the note number
    here.

    Re .13

Yet more trivia. The `hidden message' on the Pepper album was s'posed
to be smt like "Paul is dead". And all those daytrippers thought that
he was too. Maybe it should have been "Brian (Epstein) is dead".

Not bad for a band who went on to name not one, but TWO, popes.

I think it's near the end of Strawberry Fields Forever, where it
fades out and then in again, that you can hear a voice saying "I
bury Paul". Also, I believe that Revolution No. 9, when played
backwards, contains the cryptic, but obviously satanic message "F***
    your f***ing superman"

Thanks Tim, we've got to keep them readers informed of recent shopping spoils,
haven't we?

Yes, it's true, I did purchase half of said album. I quite like it, it's a good
record to annoy people with. It's also the perfect antidote to anybody who
waffles on to you about how brilliant Lennon was.

As for the subject of hidden messages, people who find this kind of thing
fascinating should go out and buy a Renaldo and the Loaf album. Most of their
stuff is played wrongways round.

As for The Stone Roses `Full Fathom Five', it is `Elephant Stone' recorded
backwards, yet still this is NO IMPROVEMENT on the tune itself.

That Stone Roses backwards song is even more confusing because it
has some forwards overdubs on it, and is a bit longer than the previous
track. First time I heard the record, I thought it was just a coda
to the original (forwards) number for a while - it do go on a bit,
    don't it.

Re Renaldo and the Loaf; how are they related to the Residents -
I have a Residents vid with a Loaf track on it, and was wondering
if this was typical of their stuff?

Bob, I've got the Residents' "Video Voodoo" with a few renaldo and the
    L. tracks. It sounds just as warped as The R's. They seem to cut
melodies down to basics and build them back up again - in their own
    detuned way.

Have you got `(Exhausted from) The Act of Being Polite' ?

Our advertisers could learn a few things from the videos. All they seem
to do recently is put `classic' songs to some image of a male or female
bimbo at a fax machine...and hey presto! the finger (which one ?) is on
the ahhh...pulse of a generation. Sickening really.

Apparently Judas Priest are about to be taken into the courts
in America regarding one of their early albums which is supposed
to contain hidden messages regarding committing suicide?!?!?!

Two american boys made a suicide pact after hearing the LP one
shot himself successfully (!?) but the other missed and lived
for two years !!! but then died due to drugs etc. Anyway his
parents are claiming COMPENSATION on the basis that the album

The song in question is called "Better by you, better than me", off an album
called "Stained Class", which they claim contains the words "Do it, Do it" and
"deliver us", whatever that's supposed to mean.

Don't all rush home to run your record players backwards, now.

Best quote of the article I read about this, in last Sunday's Independent, was
from the editor of Kerrang, who stated that "A lot of heavy-metal fans in
the States are frankly pretty dim". Of course he went on to add that
the readership of Kerrang consisted of "employed, well-educated males with
good family backgrounds". Au naturelement.
