599.0. "Kevin McDermott Orchestra" by GREBO::GURU (Only losers take the bus) Fri Feb 09 1990 12:22

I searched the notes but no topic on this, last night on NB (a Scottish arts
program) they profiled a band called the Kevin McDermott Orchestra, they played
a track live called "Diamond". They were exceptional, a cross between early
Waterboys and REM ... s sure fire winner!

Does anyone in UK_MUSIC_LAND know anything about this four-piece, what they have
out on CD ... etc, etc, etc (as the King of Siam would say!).

599.1Waterboys/REM mixture? W-e-e-e-l-l-l-l....AYOV18::DROBBSpecial delivery for Hoops McCannMon Feb 12 1990 12:5610
    Stuart, I bought their debut set last summer, and it's been well
    listened to in the ensuing months (along with Del Amitri!!).
    DIAMOND is probably my favourite track, but other gems include WHEELS
    OF WONDER, WHERE WE WERE MEANT TO BE and HEALING AT THE HARBOUR.

    There has been at least three singles released from it (BTW, it's
    called MOTHER NATURE'S KITCHEN), but, sadly, no major success yet.

    I've no hesitation in recommending this to you, Stuart, but what
    about the proposed tapes swap? ;^)

    I noticed a record by The K McD Orch at the weekend. Some writing on
    the back referred to Reading (!).

599.3I take it you disagreeGREBO::GURUOnly losers take the busMon Feb 12 1990 18:335
Dougie, I take it you disagree on the REM/Waterboys sound of Kev, I'm gonna buy
the Cd tonite hopefully and have a good listen.

As for the tapes, you never told me what you wanted .... mail me with your
requests.

    Yea, I saw them a couple of months ago opening for the Alarm.

    Pretty good band. Interesting stuff. It was sort of straight forward
    rock with more acoustic instruments.

    I liked them because after they left the stage I was wondering who I
    could compare them to. I like origionality in a band. I guess the
    REM/Waterboys comparison is valid.

599.5Shocking prices ...GREBO::GURUOnly losers take the busTue Feb 13 1990 14:4118
I went into Virgin/HMV last night, the cost for the Cd was 11.99 so I thought
I might just by the tape ... it cost 7.50.

I read the article in Which last month and totally agree that the mark up on CDs
is unbelievable. How come mail-order companies like Bee-Bee's in the UK and
Noteworthy in the States can sell CD's for really low prices and the high street
shops have to have hugely inflated prices.

I usually go to a shop called Avalanche but it's a bit of the beaten track so
it means I have to go at weekends, he sells CDs for 9.99 (or less for those Nice
Price ones).

This sort of things makes me sooooooo mad!!!!!

Anyway this isn't the correct note for ranting on about CD prices. I'm ordering
the Cd from Bee-Bees today.
599.6I finally got it ...GREBO::GURUOnly losers take the busTue Feb 20 1990 13:209
I ordered the CD from BeeBees and it was here in 2 days (not bad!) and it only
cost (Tommy) 8.99 plus 25p P&P ...  that's what I call reasonable.

Anyway back to the matter in hand ... this is a stonker of an album, some really
great toons with "Diamond" being my best but definately worth buying. They play
Edinburgh tonight but due to other commitments I can't make it (my wife won't
let me!). Maybe next time.

Stuart.
