595.0. "Norman Cook - Housemaster, Housemartin" by SHAPES::BROWNM (It's not MY fault I live in Basingstoke!) Thu Feb 08 1990 16:45

I'd thought I'd start a Norman Cook note, as he seems to be getting
    around a bit.

He's on Top Of The Pops tonight. The group is Beat International, and
the song is `Dub Be Good To Me' and features a girl singer (can't
remember the name' who used to be in Grange Hill.

The song is so good I feel like booking the afternoon off to go and buy
    it!

    Matty

ps. I think the girl singer looks georgeous I she has a great voice -
My cup of tea. Wish I was hers!

Oh dear, this note isn't doing too well.

Today I bought the cassingle and the 12".

    Tracks on the 12" are

    1.	"Dub be good to me"
    2.	"Just be good to me" (acapella)
    3.	"Invasion of freestyle: discuss"
    4.	"Ivasion of the estate agents"

All tracks are just remixes of the 1st track.

    Matty,

Just heard this record today and I'm disappointed 8-( ..
Mabie I was expecting too much from old Norman, but I think the
    SOS Band's version is better.

But after saying that, Norman is bound to release a few 'Funky,
supa-dupa, shake your bum-to-the-ground' remixes which (hopefully)
    will be better!!!

Well it can't be that bad, it's No3 after only 2 weeks on the chart.

The 12" has the tracks as previously mentioned. Basically you get the
normal version, an instrumental version, a rap version (RPM is the
rapper) and an acapella version. I love the acapella 'cause I can play
along. BTW the speed of the track is 95.25 BPM (on my record player
    anyway).

Another point. On TOTP they said Norman had down 360 remixes. Wow!

I have the Norman Cook mix of `Street Tuff' by the Rebel MC and Double
    Trouble. It's a bit naff.

    Matty
ps. I'm still in love with the singer.

Isn't the bass line just a down tempo 'Street Tuff' by Rebel and D.T??

Has anyone got the remix 12" of `Dub Be Good To Me?'

They've sold out in Boringstoke and I missed it. Should I hunt it
    down?

I said it'd get to No1! It did!

    What does this tell you?

Seriously, I have often thought that maybe I should become a talent
spotter for some or other record company. One day I'm gunna have a few
    hits of my own!

I'm still in love withe singer!

Can I just be the first to say that the harmonica samples on this
record are taken from Ennio Morricone's *excellent* soundtrack to
the classic western movie, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST?

The movie was on fairly recently, and I distinctly remember those
    rather haunting harmonica pieces.
595.14TMCUK2::GSMITHFri Mar 02 1990 20:515
    Classic western indeed.

    Sergio Leone was the best.

I heard BI's new single last night 'Dont wanna talk about it'- (or
    something like that!)
Not bad, not bad at all I only heard it once and already started to
    grow on me.

    Anyone heard the album?
595.16Guns of Brixton.GREBO::GURUYour twisting my melonsMon Apr 30 1990 16:014
I hear Paul Simenon (formerly of the Clash) is suing Norman et al for sampling
the only Clash song ever penned by Paul, namely "Guns of Brixton" on Norms
recent Numero Uno. Paul turned down 3000 squid from Norms record company saying
it wasn't enough!

A similar sort of thing is happening with Soul II Soul and who ever it
was that did 'Moments in Soul'.. Apparantly the S2S samples in the song
were used without Jazzy B's say so!

    could prove to be expensive!
