572.0. "John Peel Festive 50" by GREBO::GURU (Nuclear War is a load of ballistics) Thu Dec 21 1989 16:05

Last night was the start of the Festive 50 (Nos. 50-41), I taped most of it
but I missed No. 46 by the Pop Guns - great tune as well.

I can't remember the listing but the Inspiral Carpets had a couple of entries,
no doubt one of the papers will have the full 50 entries later in the week.

Also just before he plays the 10 tracks he airs the best sessions of 89, next
show is on Tuesday ... I heard him mention something 2 hours slots next week
so that he can get the Festive 50 out.

dont worry Ed will confirm that I've got an expert on this sitting

Festive, or what? Only one NO track in the 50, they must be slipping.
I was surprised that The Pixies were only 6 votes behind The Sundays, i
had money on The Sundays walking it.
Best part of the yule celebrations for me.

572.7I know who was No.1GREBO::GURUNuclear War is a load of ballisticsMon Jan 08 1990 20:0123
The Sundays - Can't be Sure was No.1
The Pixies - Monket Gone to Heaven was second
I think it was Happy Mondays - WFL that was third, maybe Stone Roses were third.

James - Sit down was 7 or 8, Inspiral Carpets - Joe was one above that ...
anyway this seems a bit haphazard ... I taped most of it so I'll bring in the
tapes, listen to them and jot down those numbers/places.

Seems between the third place and second there was only 6 votes or so, was
this mentioned in a previous note ... I do believe so!

Number 50 was a Inspiral Carpets track, and I do believe that they were the most
represented band in the chart (other contenders were Wedding Present/Pixies).

One track which I thought really stood out was "She Moves Through the Fair" by
Inspiral Carpets, part of their session which Peel also played as one of the
sessions of 89.

In my opinion the 88 chart was a much better chart and I had that on tape until
some git in Glasgow decided he wanted my car stereo and thought he would take
the tapes while he was about it (plus several jackets).

Moan moan gripe moan ...

572.11Heres the obvious, but why?UBOHUB::WAR_INSTSCOMild RowingThu Jan 11 1990 18:5530

We reckon The Stone Roses are going to be massive in 1990 as the
hype reaches the mainstream market and USA. It'll be interesting
to see how far they go with the aid of this compared to the strength
of their material. Fools Gold was different from the album, so what
is the next step? At the moment they appear to be in a really
commanding position which could see them go on to incredible success
or mass dissillusion on the part of their audience.

Happy Mondays will be bigger as they reach a greater audience
through the style of their new material and also partly riding on
the back of the whole Manchester hype. The situation is different
from that of the SR's. At present they have appeared to have found
a good niche which appeals to both the indie scene and the Dance
    scene.

The question is where will bands be when the Manchester rave deflates?
Will the audience remain faithful or jump on the next bandwagon?

These are two completely seperate situations. Happy Mondays have
prospered far more through the progression of their music and the
things they have to say. This degree of 'commercialisation' for
want of a better word is comparable to that of New Order's(also
on Factory Records)wheras The Stone Roses seem to be far more at
the mercy of the media. Both however we feel will enjoy great success
    at least for 1990.

572.12a vague womble...SHAPES::FIDDLERMThu Jan 11 1990 19:2524
I don't really think the Manchester scene is a bandwagon, more
something invented by the press because the most popular indie style
groups at the moment happen to come from Manchester. I can't see it as
a bandwagon that fans are jumping on and off of.

Remember back at the start of the decade we had ABC, Human League,
Heaven 17, etc, all hailing from Sheffield. I can't remember liking
them because of thier city ( although I do love the place!!), and I
certainly didn't buy Bummed becuase the group were Mancunians (another
    wonderfull place).

How about the Birmingham scene (Stuffies, Poppies, and some other more
obscure bands)? We demand the Wolverhampton scene!!

I am getting a bit sick of reading about the Stone Roses tho'...but I
don't think its their fault if all the press are writing about them.
The press are just being irritating with wanting to cover them a great
    deal.
They don't seem to have much 'Hype' in terms 'Marketing/promotion' (Is
this what we mean by Hype??).

     Or am I rambling

    Mikef
572.13ZZzzz TwinsUBOHUB::WAR_INSTSCOMild RowingThu Jan 11 1990 19:5425

    Mike,

I agree with you, I feel sorry for the Stone Roses because of the
huge pressure they have been put under by the media. The hype I
was relating to was in terms of NME singles reviews with phrases
such as " Stone Roses are perfect!"

The Manchester rave is something completely different to what we
have seen before. I don't remember similar hypes saying that towns
were " the place to be. "

There has always been a lot of music coming out of Manchester, it
is only recently that media attention has been diverted towards
it in such a big way.

I would disagree in that there is an element of a bandwagon craze
regarding Manchester.Time will only tell what will be left when
the media lay off Manchester. That is the only way to settle this
argument(unless you are a clairvoyant, of course!)HAHACheap laugh!
At the moment all we can do is speculate.

    Bruce Sturrock editing the NME...
    30 inch flares de rigeur...
Stone Roses releasing an album with lots of naked women on the cover...
Bez dressing up as a fox on stage...

But seriously, I think HM and SR will be around long after the media
have left manchester (smoke lingering around thier fingers). Its
interesting that I actually really like SR now. When I saw them in
Reading last year I thought they were dreadfull. Remind me never to be
    an A+R man.

The festive 50 is an amusing thing.

For absolutely years it was stuffed with Pink Floyds electro-grunting
, Genesis and Yes, then suddenly Punk arrives and it's full of the
Pistols, the Buzzcocks, SLF and the Clash, and now it's full of
what I consider pseudo-hippy groups (ok not all of them, but they're
predominantly this new wave indie scene (funny indie seemed to cover
so much more when I were a lad!)).

Obviously the Peel listeners are not the same people (as a whole)
over the years. Where do all the aging Peel listeners go to? Capital
    Gold?

The Carribean Club is by the hospital. If you go out on the road
towards Tadley from the Hilton, take the first left towards the
Hospital and you'll see the Carribean down in a dip on the LHS.
It looks a bit like a village hall.

Papa Brittle are definitely worth seeing, I'd rate them the best
band on the Reading-Basingstoke circuit, better than International
Resque and Jo Jo. They normally attract about 300 people in Basingstoke
not so many in Reading, but they're growing fast there. I think
they'll be playing at South St at the end of the month.

The style is very funky, very aggresive, Jesus J type drums and
samples, elements of Funk, Rock, Talking heads etc. The band are
into music ranging from JJ, House, Redskins but it's difficult to
explain a style. It's certainly a very refreshing change to see
    this type of local band.

All I can say is "GO AND SEE 'EM!" its well worth it.

I remember the Festive 50 when "Stairway to Heaven" kept winning it,
and you're right, it was very amusing how the composition of the 50
changed dramatically, in the space of about two years going from 70's
dinosaur bands to Punk (this suited me fine). I think since then John
Peel has kept his show at or near the leading edge of the youf scene.

The festive fifty in the 1970's was always a vote for your ALL TIME
favourite trax, however Peely got bored with playing the same Pistols,
Banshees and Joy Division records year in, year out, so he phased in a
second chart based on this years releases only and phased out the old
    one.

If the old format was revived, I wonder how many of last years winners
