519.0. "Bruce Sturrock Appreciation Society" by GREBO::GURU (Any minute now pop will eat itself!) Fri Oct 13 1989 17:33

If it wasn't for Bruce writing such GREAT reviews in this otherwise dull notes
conference I would resign from DEC ... in fact I'm thinking of resigning anyway
and becoming part of the "Edinburgh Bob Barmy Army", or a James groupie.

After reading Bruce's reviews I feel that I've been missing something from all
the gigs I've been to, at one of the latest concerts he was at he actually met,
fell in love with, married, had 3 kids who went onto become one of the greatest
Indie bands of the year, all with some girl called Magda! Me, I find it hard to
pick up a girl in a brothel.

All that is left to say is "Will you marry me Bruce?"

I've never heard Bob at all (although I am aware of the name, and
also like what I've heard of James if that's any help), but Bruce's
review is enough on it's own to make me want to search out that
    single.

All you have to do now, Bruce, is cultivate a more sneering attitude,
throw in some Viz references and politics, and voila! instant NME
    hack (no insult intended!!)

    Good stuff

He can't, He's gonna marry me!! He's already promised me all of
    his kids.
Personally, I would re mortgage my house, sell all of its contents,
and sell my girlfriend into the slave trade just to be able to carry
on reading the BS reviews. What did I ever do in those lonely hours
when I had nothing to do? Now I settle down with a cup of coffee
and read the latest from Bruce.
Where would the world be without Bruce 'woman a day ' Sturrock?
This man gets smiled at on the way to video shops even!

519.3OH SHUCKS! Thanks guys!BAHTAT::STURROCKI'm leaving, but I've nowhere to goMon Oct 16 1989 16:3176
    I am flattered. On reading Guru's (Stuart's?) note I thought I'd
go back and have another read of my reviews. I liked them (I surprised
myself!) but I did (as usual) notice all the bad points. I wrote
them for you lot to read...to try and encouage you to check out
the groups I was raving about. They were all done in less than an
hour and I wasn't particularly trying hard to write a 'great' review
or a magazine worthy review. I was just trying to put down...what
I felt like at the gigs - and try and show what the other people
felt like. Because of this there is a distinct lack of reference
to the actual music in one or two of them.

The Bob one I liked the most - probably because I do dwell on the
music a bit more. I liked the Cure one too - probably the most
magaziney type I've done...I used a bit of imagery in that!

All of 'em are riddled with typing errors and spelling mistakes
and I would love to transfer them back to All In 1 and edit them.
    Problem is I don't know how...anyone help?

    Now onto your comments...

Maybe I enjoy the gigs more because I get up front and really go
wild to the music. I suppose I'll get to 'that age' and will just
loose the urge to go wild with the youths at the front and try to
be mellow at the back...but I hope not.

I don't think my reviews come up to N.M.E. standard. I checked out
the James/Band Of Holy Joy one that they had last week and it really
made mine look like something a 12 year old had done! I'm going
to send some off to the freelance for Melody Maker that I met in
London...just for his comments. Oh and they'll be going in a local
Fanzine too. It's really a rubbish mag but it's a start. Just to
say that I'd love to write for N.M.E.!

O.K. all this bumf about Magda...If the girl actually realised that
I liked her so much...if she read the reviews herself...she'd probably
do something really drastic, like emmigrate to Australia!

MIKE FIDDLER...you want locking up! Ignore all the dirty rumours
that he spreads about me...I'm not going to marry anyone. I've told
you Mike, we live in sin or you can just forget me...I'm not ready
to make the commitment of marriage yet. Oh and I thought your
girlfriend was already in the slave trade...she is living with you
    isn't she?!

Now the bad news....I have only 2 and a half weeks left till I leave
DEC. My time on the Y.T.S. is nearly up and I'm currently trying
to get a job. So it looks like the end...no more...a lump rises
to my throat...I shall miss you all. O.K. stop cheering.

I'd love some comments on the reviews I've done and will be doing
before I leave...not just good stuff (although I wouldn't mind!)
point out what I'm doing wrong too!

Stuff you should see before I go:

This Thursday: Man From Delmonte - Leeds Poly

Tuesday 24th: Darling Buds - Leeds Poly

Thursday 26th: Wedding Present - Bradford St Georges Hall

Friday 27th: Wedding Present - Sheffield Poly

Tuesday 31st: Either: House of Love - Leeds Warehouse
Or : Jesus and Mary Chain - Leeds Uni.

Finally thanks Guru, Mike and Bob for your comments, if you do check
out the groups I've mentioned, let me know what you think.

It's been almost 3 hours and no sign of Bruce within this conference, he must
be serious. I expected another cool review of the Darling Buds by this afternoon.

See what you all have done, he's taken such a beating the last couple of days
as well as being off his food due to memories of happier times at the last Buds
gig.

Would it help if I said I hate the Stone ... no!, I can't bring myself to even
type it out ... I've never been a good liar you see, it all stems back to when
I was a small child ................................ SORRY, for a moment there
I thought I was lying on this leather couch talking to a man in a white coat.

I'm now starting to get the shakes, first stages of cold bruceky, if he doesn't
put a note in soon the I'll start humming Level 42 and Dire Straits songs,
next stage is the flashbacks to Wishbone Ash concerts ... hurry back Bruce - I
need a fix!

I've just filed a missing persons report with the Leeds police, panic has taken
it's grip throughout Yorkshire, beautiful girls are at this moment contemplating
suicide at the thought of our young hero never being seen again.

Top Indie bands are warming up to play a tribute show to this Young Man who gave
his life to their music ... on the phone now, top model and sex siren - Magda

"If you are out there Bruce, please contact me and your friends in the
conference ... we all miss you!"

... sounds of tears could be heard as she put down the phone. The government
has issued the following statement "If Bruce has stopped purchasing records
then I'm afraid there will be another increase in the interest rates. With the
millions of pounds that he put into the record industry it would be catastrophic
if it suddenly stopped"

Concert hall in Leeds have had to close their doors as bands all around the UK
are now refusing to play those venues, saying if Bruce isn't there to dance to
their groovy tunes then what is the point in playing.

Tim from top indie band James: "It looks like the band will now have to split
up, without the income generated by Bruce's spending on everything we produce
then we just can't survive as a band."

Well you read it here first folks, a young man at the height of his youth,
missing for 24 hours from this conference ... the world waits!

Yes James did do a song called Billy's Shirts. It's on their first
    album.

They don't really sound like anyone in particular. Although there
are similaritys with the Smiths in what they believe in and their
    opinions.

I think I've said this before but James were/are Mozzers Favourite
group. They were the support for the Meat is Murder tour and The
Smiths covered a couple of their songs live.

    They definatly appeal to Smithettes.

Well the time has come (Fnarr Fnarr!), our gallant hero of the Indie labels has
reached the final hour(s) of his employment with this great company. What next
we all ask (don't we!) ... a position as editor of the NME, Magda's toy-boy,
James groupie, or is he going to join Bobs Barmy Army ... who cares! All I
know is that I'm gonna miss the brilliant, enlightening reviews of the bands
that are happening at the moment.

The guy who had his finger on the pulse of the Indie scene had only one fault,
his dislike for the Stone Roses ... but we can forgive him for that!

I would like to be the first to wish you the best of luck for your future Bruce,
and hope you eventually marry the girl of your dreams.

Thanks for all the reviews,
Stuart.

do creep up and give you a good stabbing if you're unprepared. Good, witty
stuff. Very orchestral.
