515.0. "The Sisters of Mercy" by BREW11::TIMMINS () Tue Oct 10 1989 18:29

Does anyone like The Sisters of Mercy, THE best Gothic band
ever I know they split as a band but the remainder has carried
on and has a new Album out next year.

I'm a pre-Floodland Sisters fan. Seen 'em twice in '84 at Danceteria in NYC.

Hello everybody. It's Stuart B... back for about five hour then I'm
really gone. Yup, pitty I won't be here to write in on The Sisters, me
being a staunch fan an' all. Thank's for the mention Linda. Hello Ed!

Ok! Ed I'll take your advice and write in some thoughts of my own on
The Sisters. Before I met Stuart I hadn't heard all that much of their
material, (lucky me!) but of course Stuart soon changed that!!
What I've found from listening to the earlier stuffis that I LOVE the music
,which has a good sharp sound but I absolutely detest the "vocals".
The lyrics are great the music brill but then in comes Eldrich and
    ruins it for me.
This was definately proved after hearing Gift which sounds SO good
    without Eldrich's groanings.
Probably the rest of you will disagree but that's what I think.
Although I must add that the more recent stuff like Floodlands, vocal
wise seems more melodic but the music lacks that bite.
Suppose you can't get the best of both worlds?

Any reviews of the new album before I go buy it? I will anyway, but the new
song I heard on the radio sure sounds like Billy Idol. Same vocals with that
chorus tho. Like what I heard.

    Hi All...

Just found this notesfile so that accounts for the rather late
input. Guess it's better late than never sort of thing..

My significant other, Nick, and I have both the Floodland and
Vision Thing cd's. Enjoy both, but agree that VT gets better
with the listening. Also would agree that some songs off VT
    are a bit Billy Idolish.

The Sisters were just in Boston, was anyone able to catch their
show? Having never seen/heard them in person, was wondering how
    good they are?

    Bye for now...
    					Cheers,
    					Gayle :-)

The Boston show was GREAT! Lots of smoke, lots of guitar, lots of Mr.
Eldridge. There's more talk about it in BOMBE::RADIO_RADIO. (Hit KP7.) They
did lots more stuff from First and Last and Always than I thought they would.

BTW, I caught an episode of the US TV show "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (I don't
think it's still on) and there was a big poster of the F&L&A album on the wall
of Ferris' bedroom!

Anyone have a Sisters discography? They have a new compilation out,
culled from loads of early stuff. I've never been sure what I think of
them, but I did quite like some of the earlier things, so i'm thinking
of buying this new lp. Anyone heard it yet?

I think the only track that I really love is a Peel sesion thing they
did in 84 - a cover version of the old Hot Chocolate tune 'Emma' -
dragged out into serious grimness. great stuff! I'm listening to it
    now and scowling!

I asked at Newbury Comics and they said the Sisters of Mercy compilation was
available in the UK but not the US. I wonder if it will be released eventually.

Sure. The day after I pay the $20 it cost to buy as an import.

I do have a Discography of sorts of both The Mission and The Sisters up until
about '88 (i.e. the good stuff! :-D)... I can photocopy it for you if you want,
E-mail me your mailstop - I *did* have an textfile from another source on my
Amiga which was more helpful.... *did* until I cheesed my disk trying to get
all my files onto HD! :-( Gahhhh!

								- JIM CAD*

BTW - One of my friends gatecrashed Top Of The Pops the other night to see them,
he says they were excellent and that Oprah ???? was very beautiful - a couple
of tidbits he gave me (being a *real* fan he knows lots of inside bits and
pieces and has often talked to Andrew E. on tours etc...) - he says that Mr.
Eldritch has already pranged his new BMW and (on a different note) all the old
single cover T-shirts are being re-released (Reptile House, Temple of Love ...)

There seem to be several Sisters of Mercy compilations around:
'A slight case of..','Some girls wander..' etc. Does anyone know what the
differences are, and can recommend one or another of them?

    Hmmmm.

Some Girls Wander is a collection of tracks from EPs and other rarities
from their earlier era (ie Wayne Hussey, James Ray et al) and A Slight
Case of Overbombing is (I think; I haven't bougt it yet) a compilation
of odds and ends from the Trish Morrison / Tim Bricheno line ups.

I can definitely recommend Some Girls Wander... too, finally got
round to buying it on CD, and also a CD single which includes
Temple of Love 1992 (Touched by the Hand of Ofra Haza) which
lasts 8.05 and is EXCELLENT, especially loud (soon my neighbours
will like SOM and the Mission!), which has lots of indian-style
wailing and the lovely dark brooding voice of Andrew Eldritch.
The CD also includes I Was Wrong (American Fade), Vision Thing
(Canadian Club remix) and When You Don't See Me (German release).

One good thing about getting into a group years after they started/
changed lineup/disbanded is that you can pick up all their albums
    etc really cheap!

but from what I've heard I'm missing out!)

Mr Rumour tells me that that the elusive Mr Eldritch may be playing a
hush-hush gig or two in Leeds at the end of December. Anyone got any
    details?

I hear that Mr. Eldritch also sings (moans?) for some band called the Sisters
of Mercy.
Hope this helps,

Chris.
