492.0. "WHY DO WE LISTEN?" by YUPPY::WILDERD (The Wild Thing) Fri Sep 08 1989 20:15

I thought ,after getting into various discussions, we should
have a topic on this subject.

    So....
Why do YOU listen to music?
When do YOU listen to music?
What do you get out of who and why?
Go on , pass it on to us, those tracks/albums that give you that
    *something* .
Music is there for our own personal use.

Dear Moddy , please move this if there is a note specifically
    on this topic.

Cripes, David, that's a wide subject!

I listen to music for so many different reasons, from the purely
fun stuff at parties if I want to jig around (if you'd seen me moving,
you'd realise it could never be called dancing!) right through to
music that has to be sat and listened to intently to get the most
    out of it.

Some days I'll want the energy of punk, at other times I may want
to listen to acoustic music. Maybe I want to dig back in to my hippie
past, sometimes I feel the need for some hip hop, it all depends
on who I am with, or if I'm on my own, whether it's early in the
    morning or late at night.

As to the when, well the answer to that is 'at any time possible'.

If I had to make the choice for 'home entertainment' between music
and TV, well, it'd be no contest!

492.2Depends on yer mood ...AYOU08::BELLTue Sep 12 1989 18:0320

    RE: 1

Yep, similar with myself. Sometimes I wanna hear something wild and
full of energy, so I might put on The Jesus & Mary Chain's Phsycocandy
or maybe something like Red Lorry Yellow Lorry or Crazyhead. Other
times I'll wanna hear The Sisters Of Mercy or Joy Division or The Cure
when I'm dossing aroung on my ownsome.

When Linda's over on a Saturday I'll play a mixture of stuff, including
previously mentioned bands and the likes of The Smiths, Depeche Mode,
    New Order, etc.

It all depends on what kind of mood yer in, I mean, I wouldn't play The
Jesus And Mary Chain if I wanted to sit back and relax late at night.

    Stuart B...

492.3Maybe ...AYOU08::BELLTue Sep 12 1989 18:138

If I wanted to sit back and relax I'd play something easy and pleasant,
maybe Frazier Chorus or The Lilac Time.

    Thanks for the mention Stuart!

Me I listen to music cause I just happen to LOVE the stuff! I mean I
could never sit somewhere in silence if I knew I could play something.
To me it adds something to whatever I'm doing, whether it be when I'm
reminiscing, feeling wild and outrageous, or down right depressed.
I don't really know why I like the bands I do, or what there music does
for me; it's just Damn Good!
And yes I too would jump off a cliff if ever Maggie band tunes!!!!
    I shudder to think........

Right Linda, same here I couldn't sit somewhere in silence if I
knew I could play something I liked.

Music is a therpy to me. From the quiet slow songs for relaxation
or if they are sad - emmotional release. While the loud and fast
stuff...I suppose thats another form of emmotional release - getting
    the anger/hate out my system.

I listen mainly to stuff, that says something to me about my
life...lyrics that are really down to earth mean alot. I also like
strange imagery such as the Cure's stuff...Because the images help
you paint your own picture that referes to you.

I can't listen to 'artificial' music, stuff that is programmed (on
some sort of computer) not played...like House music and S.A.W....
because I just don't see it as music...music should be RAW as if it
has just been created, as if it is being played live.

    Bruce.

Agree with almost all of this one....however there are times
when even 'House' music satisfies a particular mood/desire.

The mood dictates the music, Motorhead one day, Eek A Mouse
the next.....as long as *you* enjoy it, don't worry what
	*they* say !!!

I'm find that as i am getting older, my reasons for listening are
changing. I'm listening to more old fogey stuff like the beatles and
60's music. Starting to feel like my dad sitting around listening to
his big band albums. Music is more of a means for me to communicate
with people than it used to be. I used to think i was a serious
musician but now i've come to terms that i like entertaining people.
I would rather listen to music that isnt recorded as well, but has
feeling and something i can relate too as apposed to a formula rock
album recorded on a 9 zillion digital machine.
But i cant wait to get the Batman soundtrack by Prince...whew! I
still feel a little bit hip. *8^)

You wanna be really hip, you have to be into some sixties band that
no one else is, like f'rinstance the Bonzo Dog Band ;^)

492.10WHY,WHEN I DO.YUPPY::WILDERDThe Wild ThingWed Sep 13 1989 17:5922

    Why do I listen?
Normally to enhance a mood that I'm already in. Sometimes to change
the mood if it's not a good one. To relax and forget the yucky
    old world outside my flat.

    When?
First thing in the morning, sometimes the radio but I don't like
being dictated to this early, so normally my choice!
To and from work. This is the best time to get "into" new stuff!
We have an additional amp and speakers in the bedroom. Here plays
stuff like; Vega, This Mortal Coil, "E.T.B.T.G" to drift off to
    or Robert Palmer,Grace Jones,etc if I need a "jump-start.

On a nice evening we pile up onto the roof and mellow to Boz Scaggs,
Aztec Camera, Black among others, whilst counting stars.
    Then into a club to "house-out"!! 8^)

Unless there are guests for dinner LOUD volume is a must.

    David

How do your neighbours react to LOUD, David? I'm in the fortunate
(?) position of having an empty, condemned house on one side, and
a woman on the other side who is usually too drunk to notice when
    I crank it up!

My neighbours have on one side have complained profuslly about my
loud music...they have threatened us with petitions and twice now
have come round with threats of violence...I stay calm and shut
the door in the guys face.

They expect us to keep our windows shut all summer - double glazing
as well and no way am I gonna do that...I will consider them but
they will have to accept us...next time he comes round he's gonna
get a kick in the balls and a packet of cotton wool that we bought
    especially for him.

Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours, next door is only a
    footstep away!

ok, i guess i will have to keep listening to my Syd Barrett CD 60 more
    times.

does anyone know if he is dead? Those of you who dont know who he is,
he was the founder of Pink Floyd.

492.16TOO LOUD??!!!YUPPY::WILDERDThe Wild ThingWed Sep 13 1989 21:2815
We play TOO LOUD TO SHOUT. No-one has ever complained ( it is an
old house which helps) A mirror fell off a shelf in the 2nd
bedroom when the speakers in the lounge were "belting" last week!!

    8^)
We had the Carnival to compete with recently though.

I hate music when it's just there in the background. You miss some
details/depth and as I've been in several bands before my current
dabblings I know the level music is "conceived" at. Now I always
play stuff at the level I think the band originally produced it
    at!!

    David.
BTW: I think someone ought to keep an eye on Bruce!! 8*)
492.17WELMTS::GREENBThe Rotters ClubWed Sep 13 1989 21:328
I think there is some music that serves a purpose as 'background',
for instance, what could be considered 'partying' music, which is
basically there to be shouted over, got drunk to, or danced to.
But yes, it does ^%&$% me off when someone puts on something more
'meaningful' (maan) and then proceeds to jabber all the way through
    it.

    Bob
492.18ACESMK::KUHNSky of blue, sea of green...Wed Sep 13 1989 22:447
When i'm at a party, er, when i used to go to parties, i didn't care
too much for 'meaningful' stuff. I think a good party is one where some
one plays all music you usually hate, but you are having such a good
time you enjoy it...if you remember it afterwards. Its usually in these
states of mind that you start understanding why there is jazz. :-)

492.19Why I listenWEA::PURMALRhymes with thermal and that's coolFri Sep 15 1989 10:3133
Sorry about getting back to the topic at hand, but...

I listen to music because I like to. I like the way some music and
songs make me feel. Music can affect me in two ways, the overall sound
seems to get to the feeling side of my brain, and the lyrics can make
me feel satisfied "intellectually" (can't think of a better word for
it). I usually react more to the emotional effects of music than to
the lyrics, but my favorite songs affect me in both areas.

I listen to music as often as I can. I've got my walkman tuned to
my favorite college station now, and I'm listening to a group. When I
don't like the DJ on the radio I'll put in a tape or put on a CD
sometimes. I listen to music about half the time here at work. At
home I don't listen to music as much as I'd like to because my wife and
I don't have the same tastes. I take refuge by doing errands and
blasting the music out in the car.

When I'm not listening to music, I'll usually find myself "playing"
a song in my head by thinking about it and I can hear it. I find
myself doing it unconciously at time, and sometime my unconscious has
    very questionable taste.

I've done a lot of thinking about how I acquired my musical tastes,
but I still really can't say why I like the things that I do. I also
can't describe why the things I used to like don't thrill me as much as
they used to. I really used to be into Yes, ELP, ELO, and other
heavily produced groups with the "big" sound. But now they just don't
interest me as much. I prefer bands that record stuff that they could
probably reproduce live. I also like a rougher sound, and I don't mind
off key singing or playing, if it goes along with the whole "feel" of
    the song.

Sorry Bob, last I saw of him was a concert on TV (anyone
got a copy ?), havn't seen any new albums by him recently either.

I won't rathole this topic much, but continuing with the theme...
...I find that if I have a headache the best way to get rid of
it is to chuck on Hawkwinds' 'Space Ritual' at a high enough
volume not to annoy Basingstoke, and close my eyes......If the
headache hasn't gone by the time i've played both records, I

I agree with the "playing" something in my head I do it rather alot
when I can't be near some music. It's strange becuase it's never just
the vocals, or the music but the whole damn lot that goes swirling
around my brain. I can pick out everything as on the record.
Strange what the brain can do!
