474.0. "Folk Festivals '89" by TRUCKS::OGDEN () Thu Aug 10 1989 19:52

    Hello out there,

As far as I can see, there is no discussion topic covering this
    year's folk festivals.

I so far have attended Bracknell, Cambridge, Alnwick and am soon
to attend Cropredy. Did or will anyone else go / be going, and if
so what did you enjoy / expect to enjoy.

Personally, Lyle Lovett, Nancy Griffith, Whippersnapper, Al Stewart,
Ali Farke Toure, and The Kursal Flyers made my spine tingle.

Come on all of you closet folkies get typing !

    Oggy.

Oggy, have you checked out COOKIE::FOLK_MUSIC? I'm sure there will
be stuff about festivals in there.

BTW, isn't Cropredy where Fairport Convention have their annual
    reunion bash?

Yep, Climax Blues Band at Cropredy. Just a nit Bob but I wouldn't
really call it a Folk Festival. Fairport, Richard Thompson, Steeleye etc play
folk-based music but mostly electric & most definitely not finger in the ear
traditional.
I've been to the last 2 and am going again this year. I have a US
friend who is coming over specifically to attend and I think that I've
persuaded a number of other people to go as well. I thoroughly recommend it to
anyone who enjoys good music. The food stalls, instrument makers, clothes
vendors etc make for a great time also. Nice relaxed party atmosphere, no
slamdancing.
Returning to Climax, Fairport seem to have a penchant for an act of
this sort on the bill. Last year it was the Steve Gibbons Band who were great,
the year before it was Chicken Shack who I was unimpressed with. Also last year
there were the Kursaal Flyers who are just as great as ever they were and have
an new album out called something like 'When a former tour de force is forced
to tour'.
I'll post the full details of the festival in the next note.

474.7did you hear ?TRUCKS::OGDENFri Aug 11 1989 19:018
Still within the Folk oevre, has anyone bought or heard the Bolied
In Lead Lp "From the Ladle to the grave". I bought it around three
    months ago after hearing a track on....Radio 2 !
It really is splendid, traditional music from Europe and Asia played
with rock n roll instruments...it certainly removes the cobwebs
    from the stereo !

Thanks for all that, Nigel! I'm glad to see that more than one 'type'
of music can be found at this kind of event. You know, I might just
have to have a look at my finances here - I like the idea of going
somewhere where you don't get stomped! You've got me interested
    now.....

A couple of questions about the fest, which may be important if
    I decide to go.....

    Where is Cropredy?
Can I get tickets at the site, or do I need them in advance? If
so, where do I get them?

Cropredy is just north of Banbury which itself is about 20/30 miles north of
Oxford. You can get tickets on site. If you buy them in advance you get a pound
or two discount before 1st August but of course it's too late now (for this
year anyway).

For your future reference the place to get tickets or Fairport
records/sweatshirts/underwear/other memorabilia is :-
Woodworm Records
PO Box 37
Banbury
Oxon

This is run by Fairport & they will be happy put you on their mailing list for
details of gigs, new releases etc.
