465.0. "A buzzing tune in my brain....." by EGAV01::OSHAUGHNESSY () Thu Jul 27 1989 20:56

    I woke up last Saturday morning with a slight 'payback' (as James Brown
    would say) and two lines from a song I heard about three months ago.

    The lines are (they are as close as I can remember, I heard it in
    The Warwick Hotel, Galway, presume the worst):

     ".......Why did you do it
      Why did you do that thing to me..." (????)

    I originally thought it was Lou Reed and searched through his albums,
    but, to no avail, then somebody said Ry Cooder, nope I don't think so.

    Can anybody help me shut down this musical brain cell. It's begining
    to lose me friends.

    I looked through the notes file to find a topic on this area, and
    I couldn't find one. If there is one, mea culpa.

     thanks from a distressed soul

        Richard O'Shaughnessy

    Sounds like a couple of lines from a Robert Palmer tune
    "Dicipline of Love". I can't recall off hand what album it is off
    of. Either the last one, "Heavy Nova" or the one before that,"Riptide".

    The chorus goes something like this....
    "Why did you do it
     Why did you go and spoil the fun
     Why did you do it
     You need a dicipline of love"

    Its a rockin' tune. Good luck!

    A cover version of this was released in 1987 by The Groove Train
    which was a one-off release by Steve White/Nick Heyward and produced
    by Martyn Ware of Heaven 17. It featured a female singer called
    Gloria, so the version you mention is probably the original. This
    cover version was a flop. I'll read the small print tonight to find
    out who the original is by. Stretch does sound familiar though.

465.4Stretch it is!WELMTS::GREENBLove tentFri Jul 28 1989 18:098
    Yep, it is Stretch, whose lead singer was Elmer Gantry. Back in
    1975, when this was a hit, the band I was in at the time supported
    them. They were totally awful, apart from this one song. "Why did
    you do it" was an acceptable bit of white funk (not a million miles
    away from stuff like the AWB) but the rest of their set was this
    horrible grinding lacklustre macho rocky stuff.

    As they say in Irish 'Sin e, maith an fear"

        Once the Average White Band were mentioned, the brain cell shut
    down ..... thanks......
