430.0. "10K Maniacs" by 45426::SAXBY (Trailing Edge Technology) Tue May 30 1989 16:26

    Anyone got the 10,000 Maniacs album?

    I saw it in the shops and expected a chainsaw and makeup HM outfit,
    but instead they're (on hearing a single) a melodic Fairground
    Attraction sounding group.

    Having been disappointed by the latter's album, I wondered if anyone
    had any feelings on the 10k maniacs output.

    Well, I have "In my tribe" ( I think it's the first album ), on
    tape with R.E.M. Document on the other. I prefer R.E.M., but 10000
    maniacs is OK. Her voice reminds me of Stevie Nicks, but without
    being too sickly. Check out their version of Peace Train! I heard
    the Cat Stevens version only recently.

    Cheers.

430.2"In My Tribe" was their 2nd album45944::SKELCHERTue May 30 1989 22:139
    "In My Tribe" is their second album, and (in my opinion) their best.
    (I think "peace Train" is the worst track on it easily, so that tells
    you something about my taste!)

    The first one was "The Wishing Chair" and had a slightly harder sound.
    It's still pretty good, and difinitely better than the new one which I
    found a big disappointment.

430.3More commercial each time - Uuugh!RAB::KARDONSomeone's been a bit untidyWed May 31 1989 00:0311
	Actually, _In My Tribe_ is their third album. It's their second on
	a major label. Their first album was called secrets of the I-Ching
	and I have only succeeded in finding a bootleg copy of it.

	Each of their albums seems more commercially acceptable. _Trouble Me_
	never would have made it on _the Wishing Chair_. I haven't heard
	the new album yet, but I don't like the trend.

	My favorite is WC.

This is a bit late from the previous replies, but I've only just found this
conference.

Secrets of the I-Ching was the first album as far as I know, the best track IMO
has to be Dulce et Decorum Est, a poem by Wilfred Owen (killed in WW1), I think
it's excellent, well worth getting the album for.

I have one of the later albums, can't remember the title but it didn't seem as
good as Secrets.
