427.0. "Tin Machine" by SHAPES::FIDDLERM () Tue May 23 1989 20:09

        Anyone out there got or heard the Tin Machine album.. I'm not
    much of a Bowie fan, but I heard some of it in Our Price at lunchtime,
    and it sounded interesting.

    Rolling Stone Magazine in the US says its quite a change from the
    "Warmed Over Lets Dance material" from bowies last album. THe video
    on MTV lasts about 9 minutes and they cover pieces of most of the
    songs. The guitar player looks like Robert Fripp but its some other
    person. They did say the words get a little thin in places but the
    energy of the album makes up for it. They also stated that Bowie
    is trying to be part of a band as apposed to using the band as a
    backdrop.

427.2So far so good...UFHIS1::JTOWNSHENDMy Doctor says... Mon May 29 1989 11:0911
    I bought the CD Saturday having read the review in Q magazine.

    I haven't listened to it all yet...It is a lot heavier than the
    last two records (which i have not got).

    The band consists the Sales brothers who were in Iggy Pops '73 lin-up
    with Bowie and a guitarist called Reeves Gabrels.

    I will give it a blast at work today !

427.3Think it'll be goodAYOU08::BELLMon May 29 1989 17:0115

    I've been thinking of buying this for a while now, but I still ain't
    heard it myself although people I know have been talking highly
    of it, it's really the fact that it's more guitary that grabbed
    my interest.

    I also heard myself that this is Bowie acting more of a band member
    than a solo artist with a backing band, which I personally prefer.

    I'm wait 'till I hear it before I chance the money though, but I
    think it'll be good.

427.4And now for something completely differentAYOV27::GHERMANGeorge Herman 823-3016Mon May 29 1989 18:2716
    I did buy it this weekend and the reviews are spot on. Screaming
    guitar work...this would *never* be played in a disco. Feels like
    capturing a sweaty performance in a small nightclub. The lyrics
    are definitely of the sort that would not get airplay on TOTP either.

    I had to think a bit before filing it...I did put it under "Bowie"
    as opposed to filing under "Tin Machine", but it's different enough
    from most of his work since Diamond Dogs that it was a decision.

    I'd give it an 85...

    Happy listening and beware those of you expecting the Bowie of the
    80's to date!

427.5DEF II special on themAYOV27::GHERMANGeorge Herman 823-3016Tue May 30 1989 14:4416
    Saw a half-hour special on Tin Machine last night on DEF II. Some
    quick rambles on it:

    The way they shot the videos of the songs was very much how the music
    feels- The four of them sweating away in a small nightclub with
    slamdancers and stage-divers and a very punk feel, but in evening
    clothes. The way they wrote a few of the songs is for the group to play
    some riffs, lay down a track and Bowie would go off and write the
    lyrics over lunch. Bowie's hoping to do two more albums with this group
    or until they get sick of or angry at each other.

    Tony and Hunt Sales sounfd very much like their dad, Soupy in their
    phrasing- it's very distracting to one who watched their dad.

427.6Definately different...HYEND::SCHILTONThe older we get,the farther we seeFri Jun 02 1989 19:065
    I saw the last couple minutes of Tin Machine doing Under
    the God (?) last night on MTV. It's overwhelming...the
    flashing lights, crowd dancing, bodies flying around, Bowie
    singing, sh*t-hot guitars..I couldn't take my eyes from the
    screen.
427.7Love ItXNOGOV::WALBURNMon Dec 04 1989 20:488
    Everyone I've spoken to about the Tin Machine album reckons it's
    REALLY good, so why didn't it do very well chartwise ? Why have
    all the singles released from it flopped ?
    I think it's an absolutely BRILLIANT album !
    Does anyone know when the next one will be released ?

    Pete.

427.8Something NewXNOGOV::WALBURNWed Dec 13 1989 17:587

    Does anyone know if Tin Machine are going to do another album or not ?
    I read somewhere that Bowie was going to be doing some stuff with
    someone else..... anyone know any details ?

    Pete.

427.9Wot? No producer?AYOV18::DROBBMore paranoid than a PresidentThu Dec 14 1989 14:306
    Last week's NME reported that Bowie is planning a second Tin Machine
    album, BUT, it would appear that he's struggling to find a producer
    who's willing to due the business for him. Changed days indeed.

    FWIW, "Q" magazine lists TIN MACHINE amongst the best fifty of the
    year. :8) [ <-- glasses have slipped onto nose ]
427.10Never ?XNOGOV::WALBURNThu Dec 14 1989 14:345
    Well I hope he does find a producer....
    I find it hard to believe that noone will produce it !

    Simon Bates was interviewing him, but I didn't hear any of it, so
    if anyone did could you let me know what was said please.....

    Pete.

427.14Wasn't quick enough off the mark (as usual)....AYOV18::DROBBBilly rapped all night about suicideThu Feb 22 1990 16:122

    for the shows at Ingleston?
427.15Sold outXNOGOV::WALBURNFri Feb 23 1990 14:378
