424.0. "Julia Fordeham" by AYOV28::MDONNELLY (mad dog surrender) Thu May 18 1989 20:43

A friend was recently singing the praises of this girl's debut (only?)
    album.

Don't know anything about her. Can anyone help?

    Thanks,

    Michael

Good album. What else can I say?

In my eyes, a *very* good debut album - you must have heard a few
of the songs that have been singles (WOMAN OF THE 80'S ; COMFORT
OF STRANGERS ; HAPPY EVER AFTER). She has a lovely voice, and writes
discernible true-to-life lyrics. The songs are varied in their
arrangements, well played and subtly produced - what's more, if
you look around, you'll find copies of the album which have a free
six-track 12" featuring live versions of some of the songs on the
    album.

Well worth investigating via the record token that burning a hole
    in your jacket pocket. ;-)

My cousin (who works in a record store) told me a while back that
based on promotions, advertisements, advance shipment of records,
cassettes, and CD's, etc., that Julia Fordham appeared to be the
female singer/new artist receiving the biggest "push" by her record
company this year. Apparently, all of the work has yet to pay-off
in the U.S., as "Happy Ever After" was a minor hit for only a very short
    time.

Good female writer/singer from my neck of the woods (Hayling Island).
I saw here last year in Portsmouth most of the crowd seemed to be
family or friends, but the concert was very good.
As a former backing vocalist herself (for Marie Wilson) she had
great backing and very competent instrumentalists.
Since then I've been hooked, the albums good, it's good to see
a few notable female vocalist around.

Her debut album, as people have said is excellent. It's extremely easy
to relate to the lyrics and her voice is superb. I saw her at the
Manchester Apollo in '89 and she was good although the place itself
doesn't help in generating any sort of atmosphere. She seems to appeal
to the older (like myself), more mature (not so like myself) audience; we
found the concert was mainly attended by groups of women in the 25-45
    age bracket.

424.7Juila F...who...?YUPPY::MOOREJEMAZZERFri Mar 23 1990 17:1921
    Julia Ford...who,

One of the biggest (don't believe the hype records of 1989..!) It
really gets my goat when people like her only get by because their
relations have the contacts to get them a deal.... there are session
singers like Tessa Niles and Carol Kenyan who have been around much
longer and can definitely sing the @rse of Julia and who deserve much
    more credit than they get!

I guess you could say she was born with a contract in her mouth...
one consolation is at least her dad has given up! Phew!!!

It's also sad to hear people like Julia who couldn't write a song for
toffee, getting the credits for them. And why does she try so hard
to sound black? She has got the wrong skin colour or hasn't she
    got a mirror?

Well I like her, and I don't know and couldn't care less about how she
    got her contract.
