423.0. "Suggestions please..." by AYOV28::MDONNELLY (mad dog surrender) Thu May 18 1989 17:39

I've been given a record token in a birthday present (don't scorn
all you rich CD owners!). Now isn't it always the case that when
you can't afford an album, you can think of a hundred you'd like
to buy, but when you have the money or token, you're stuck!

Anyway, I have a short list at the moment which I would appreciate
anyone's comments on, but please feel free to add a suggestion of
    your own.

Simple Minds new one - poor reviews in notes?
Deacon Blue new one - heard some tracks but open to persuasion
Elvis Costello - SPIKE - comments??
Kirsty McColl - KITE - great review in Q Mag.
Fine Young Canabals - Loved the singles , but?
Bonny Rait ???? - Anyone heard her new album?

    Thanks,

    Michael

423.1My first choice might be XTC though!HYEND::SCHILTONThe older we get,the farther we seeThu May 18 1989 17:5716

Mine might not carry quite the weight that some others' opinions
would with you but .... my vote goes to FYC. I've had it a week
now and have played little else. Roland Gift's voice is great,
so versatile and the album's got ballad's as well as pop-'ish'
stuff, so he really gets to use it to its fullest.

The only thing I know from Bonnie Raitt's new one is the single
"Are You Ready for a Thing Called Love?'. The video gets shown
quite a lot on MTV and VH-1 and is just her and Randy (or is it
Dennis?) Quaide making goo-goo eyes at each other. You sort of
get the feeling they can't wait for the song to end so they can
go for a roll in the hay.

Well, I would suggest the Bonnie Raitt album, but I will admit a couple
biases. First, I don't really like the other bands on your list, so I
couldn't give an objectice opinion about them. And also, I am a *big* fan
of Bonnie Raitt's.

But all that aside, Bonnie's album is her best if years, and is just GREAT!
If you like her previous stuff, I would highly recommend the new one!

I've never heard a Bonny Raitt album as such Alan, but I'm familiar
with her as a backing vocalist on most Jackson Browne albums.

I've always thought she has a wonderful voice, and then DLT (Radio
    1) played a track from the new album at the week-end and I thought
    ..mmm, that sounds nice.

BTW, FYC are leading by a short head at the moment!

SpIke certainly is a very good album with many differeing musical
styles. If you like good lyric writing, Elvis can't be beaten.

Have you considered the latest XTC release (do you like them), Oranges
and Lemons? It's their best for a while, IMHO

That's right, Michael, Partridge is innovative without being
pretentious; you can usually detect the roots of his music (quite
'sixties' at the moment, without in any way jumping on any nostalgia
    bandwagon).

He's similar, in that respect, to Elvis Costello, even though their
    styles are somewhat different.

i hear Barry Mantilow has a new album out. Can't get any hipper
    than that.

actually, the FYC has been getting excellent reviews. i'd give that
    a shot.

There's something about ol' Rolands voice, y'know.... it's very
good, but he always sounds to me like he's holding back a bit, as
if he needs to clear his throat and really belt it out. As a
consequence, FYC records make me feel uncomfortable, like if I cleared
my throat it would help him somehow.

    Does this make any sense?

Jay, that new Barely Manenuff, although excellent, will never match
the towering majesty of his earlier works. I'd pass on that one.

I usually use Record Tokens to buy OLD albums.

You know, the sort of albums that you've always loved to listen
to but would never spend your own money on because you wanted
	to get the new releases.

If you're going to buy a 'latest-release' scrap your list
and go straight for Joe Jackson's new album. I don't have
it but I heard some tracks on the radio and it sounds excellent.

Funny you should say that about Joe Jackson, Tony.

I was a *big* JJ fan for years - got LOOK SHARP, I'M THE MAN, BEAT
CRAZY, NIGHT & DAY (best of all) and then I bought the follow up
which I can't remember the name of right now, and was disappointed.

Think I'll like the new one?

BTW, this month's Q Mag gave the new China Crisis album a great
review. It says they team up once again with that ex-Steely Dan
Walter Becker, and they even sound like the Dan on some tracks.

Sounds too good to be true. Anyone heard it?

Sorry, Stewart, most of your suggestions are fine (if not a trifle
older), but I happen to believe strongly that Depeche Mode are the
worst band in the history of the human race.

    p.s. - I've got the Propoganda album, but I don't think it's that
    good.

	Re. -17

	Michael,

Sounds like we feel the same about Joe Jackson.
Look sharp was my favourite album for a long time
(I even loved the cover !). Night and day was a new departure for
him, kinda like his coming of age. It was a more refined type
of music/lyrics than his previous works.

His new album (from what I heard of it) is a cross between these
two. It has the beat and raw energy of Look Sharp and the class
and sophistication of Night and Day.

	It's one for my collection.

	Tony.

    Mick,

I have the Elvis Costello and the new Bonnie Raitt which are both
    excellent albums.

But I also have the new Joe Jackson 'Blaze of Glory'.
I have five of his previous albums and I have found that exah new
album is better than the last.

But the new one is absolutely brill !
I will have to purchase a new copy soon as it is almost played out.

Well Michael, after 22 replies/suggestions what's it going to be.

Is that record token going to rot away in your back pocket or
are you going down to the record shop at lunchtime.

Time to make a decision boy.

423.24I used to be indecisive, now I'm not sure...AYOV28::MDONNELLYmad dog surrenderWed May 31 1989 16:4824

I've lost it! I was looking for it at the week-end and couldn't
find it. Think my daughter's eaten it.

As to the choice, I wish I hadn't bothered. So many great suggestions
have made me even more indecisive than before.

However the front runners are now:-

    		Joe Jackson Blaze of glory
FYC The raw and the cooked
China Crisis Diary of a rocking horse

It will be one of those three. If/when I find the token or my
    daughter, I'll let you know.

    Thanks to all contributors,

    Michael

Forget all the otthers...run out and buy the new Tom Petty album
(Full Moon Fever).....he's assembled a great studio band without
the Heartbreakers...apparently including George Harrison and Jeff
Lynne...not a bad cut on the album...especially "Running Down A
