407.0. "Groove Graffiti" by 43245::MACFADYEN (Possibly meaningful) Mon Apr 24 1989 16:24

In the run-out grooves of records you sometimes find cryptic messages.
I was looking at a few LPs and singles last night and began to write
down some of them, which follow. I could only find them on records out
on Indie labels, with Joy Division/New Order being a particularly rich
source. Anyone got other good examples, know who does them, and what a
    Porky Prime Cut is?

Porky Prime Cuts: JD 12" "Transmission", Motors 1 lp, Young Marble
Giants "Colossal Youth" lp, Undertones first lp (which is "an unusual"
    ppc).

Wah! "Come back" 12": Kiss goodbye to gold, dickhead / Bette Bright
    said she might

JD "Love will tear us apart" 12": Don't disillusion me / I've only got
    record shops

"Transmission" 12": I've seen the real atrocities / Buried in the sand

"Atmosphere" 12": Here are the young men / But where have they been

NO "Ceremony" 12": Watching love grow - forever / How I wish we were
    here with you now

"Blue Monday" 12": Out voted / Ho, El + Tel!

"Temptation" 12": What do you think

"Technique" lp: What exactly do you mean, Peter? (and repeated in
mirror writing on the reverse side!)

House of Love 1st lp: Adrenalin (both sides)

Live Stiffs lp: More beef / Here today and tomorrow

Banshees "Fireworks" 12": Eat the sleeve

Some of these sound like fragments of lyric, others obviously aren't.
They seem to follow similar rules to personal names in Notes...

I noticed these "messages" a few years back. I think they are scratched
on by the cutting engineer that produces the first master of a
particular disk. That disk is used to produce a number of template
stampers which then produce all the records that go out for sale.
Hence the message gets copied over to every copy of the disk.

Why do they do it? I think it's like a signature (as you said they're
like personal names in notes) so that the cutting engineer could
pick up a copy of that album anywhere in the world and see his
    own personal "Kilroy was here".

I think .0 and .1 are talking about two different things.

.0 is on about something _recorded_ in the exit groove,
whilst .1 is talking about physical scratches in the
    exit area.

Or have I gone completely mad?

    Ray.
407.3Interesting topic!JGO::APETERSBeep Beep !Mon Apr 24 1989 18:4618
I have some records containing messages in the middle, both in sound and
in text. To be honest, the audiomessage is, in fact, just a prolongued last
tone, sung by the ladies of DAME BLANCHE. The song is a coverversion of
Marvin Gaye's HANG ON IN THERE BABY. The last word (I'll give you AAAAAAAAAAll)
continues indefinetely. A record by HEAVEN 17 seems to have a similar gag, but
I don't know which one. On CD the tone goes on for about 2 minutes, and then
fades away.

One record I have with written text is OOCHY KOOCHY by BABY FORD, one of the
first acid house 12" records imported into my country. I don't know them by
heart, 'cause it's quite a lot. A friend of mine owns another pressing of the
same record, which has large letters scratched on the B-side. Therefore, only
the A-side can be played.

If you're interested, I will look the text up for you.

Andre.

No we're not! We're both talking about physical markings scrawled
between the run-out grooves at the end of each side of the record.
You'll usually find some sort of catalogue number there, but
ocasionally you find the sort of thing I was "on about" in .0.

    re .0...
"A Porky Prime Cut" denotes that the original "positive" disc, cut
from the master tape, was produced by Porky Peckham. He has his
own mastering suite and has been in the business donkeys. Records
mastered by Porky tend to be very clear and dynamic; after a while
you can tell a Porky cut just by listening.

Some other signatures I've noticed are:

    "Bilbo-great stuff!" (Gerry Rafferty/Night Owl)
"Bilbo tape-worth waitin' for!" (Steely Dan/Gaucho)
    	-who the heck is Bilbo?
"Happy Birthday Glyn"(Eagles/Greatest hits, US pressing, presumably
a greeting to producer Glyn Johns, who produced some of their best
    stuff, including "Desperado".)

Another signature which features often - in my collection, anyway
    - is "JA", where the top bar of the J is also the crossbar of the A,
presumably Jako Allen, who is in the sleeve credits of some these
    albums.

I assume Bilbo is refers to the character Bilbo Baggins, from J.R.R. Tolkein's
'Lord of the Rings' series. A lot of bands read, and got inspiration from,
this set of books (for example, Led Zep wrote a few songs with references to
it, including "Ramble On" and "Battle Forevermore").

    Re -1:

I can think of a couple. There was a single out in the late 70s, quite
catchy, which ended with a repeated chant, "beat" or "the beat" - this
repeated forever in the run-out. Can't remember the band's name.

Also I have an early 80s lp by 23 Skidoo in which the last tracks on
each side go into a continuous tone in the run-out.

Actually, if they put a sot of tv close-down tone into the run-out of
every record it would remind you to take the record off, wouldn't it?
    Or drive you nuts...

On the Eagles Live LP, at the end of Side 4, the applause just goes on and
on and on, for eternity.......or until you hit the reject button!

I know that I have a bunch of albums with inner groove writings. I don't
remember all of them, but one was Cindy Lauper's debut album. I know there
are a lot more though....

I have heard this type of thing on records - but I had assumed it
was just part of the 'fade out' of the last track?

You get the cd equivalent of the perpetual groove if you smear the
disc with a very light coating of seedless strawberry jam.

re. a few back:

10CC's Sheet music has a 'Porky prime cut' scratching - no pun
    intended :-)

As for CD's, I had a copy of Queen's 'Kind of Magic' CD which was
ever so slightly duff and sounded like a well crucial dub mix - I
nearly didn't take it back !

Thought id shove in my tuppence worth!!

The group who I first discovered did this was The Smiths. I cant
remember the exact messages off the top of my head but i will dig
them out and have a look. They are on all manner of records from
7" singles to lp's. These I expect are pertinent point put forward
by our lord and master Morrisey.

    Any ideas!!!!

I was back in Reading at the weekend and splashed out on some new vinyl.
Aren't double LPs popular again? No fewer than three records on my list
turned out to be doubles, one of which was, just as an object, the most
beautiful record I've seen as a while, the double ten-inch of Lush's
"Spooky".

To come to the point, all three feature groove graffiti on every side, and
here it is:

Lush "Spooky" 10-inch double
1 'What do you call Lush's...'
2 'Bass player in Japan'
3 'Rippon in Nippon'
4 'Wise words mate'

Ride "Going Blank Again" 12-inch 45rpm (I found out) double
R 'Die with your boots on'
I 'Little attack'
D 'Win or lose, up the U's'
E 'It's never final till it's vinyl' (must say I like that one)

Primal Scream "Screamadelica" 12-inch double
1 'You only get one line'
2 'Don't blow it'
3 'Equity is killing me'
4 'I'll have a cheeky half'

Isn't that just totally amazing...

Yes, a ten-inch double gatefold is amazing these days!

Anyone who might soon be anywhere near Berwick St. in Soho interested
in picking me up a copy of "Spooky" at Sister Rays or anywhere else
    	for that matter?

Sorry to clutter here with another silly desire of mine!
