368.0. "Reference books?" by 45610::STREETR (Whadda mistaka to mayka) Mon Mar 13 1989 19:19

Is there a defintive reference book for singles/albums
    released in the UK?

I know about the Guinness Book of Hit Singles/Albums BUT
this is not definitive, ie. it really only gives hits.

I also have a book called 'The NME book of Rock", this however
dates from 1974ish; it contains entries on groups etc, with a brief
history, and then discography. I have not seen a later version
    of this book.

Basically I would like to acquire a Guinness type book, but
containing all albums (I am more interested in albums) released.

      Any help?

     Ray.

The "Music Master Track Index" will set you back 19.95. Be warned
that it's very selective (e.g. no reference to 70's albums from
Little Feat or Graham Parker, for instance, even though they sold
    pretty well at the time).

The Virgin Mega-thingy in Oxford St usually stock them in the books
section. Failing that they're available direct from the publishers
(Hastings or somewhere like that). I suspect a phone call to Virgin
    may be a good idea.

(There is also a Guiness Hit Albums book but this isn't too
    comprehensive, either).

    Good Luck!

Does anybody have the exact title ( and preferably the I.S.D.N(?)) of
the book Bruce Thomas ( ex=Attraction ) has published?

Thanks in anticipation,

Stuart

Is this his fictional tale of a band not a million miles removed from
the Attractions and featuring a character based on Elvis Costello?

Well worth reading - Lost in Music, by Giles Smith. This came out in
paperback recently, and is an account of his interest in music as he
grew up, and his involvement in a band called 'Cleaners from Venus'.
Its very funny, especially the bits about Nik Kershaw.

Also recommended - High Fidelity, by Nick Hornby. This is a novel
about a bloke who runs a record shop, and is also very funny and quite
    touching.

might check it out now I have a recommendation.

I saw something the other day that questioned some bits of the book now
they have gone cabaret, and reformed. I think the word hypocrite was
    used! Anyone confirm this?
368.13CHEFS::FIDDLER_MThe sense of being dulls my mindWed Jun 19 1996 14:267
Sounds just like John Lydon to me....he quite happily admits to being a
hypocrite in the face of the enormous amount of dosh that they have
been offered, and I think I would be too...

Yes I have it - a good read that provides an interesting insight to the
events of that period. How much of it is truthful I do not know, not
    all of it I'm sure.
