353.0. "MADONNA - LIKE A VIRGIN!!!" by 45610::BROWNM () Thu Feb 23 1989 14:36

    This a topic all about the most successful female artist ever;

    i.e. MADONNA

I'd like to know about new records to be released. I've heard that
a new LP to be released during the second week of march, called
"Like A Prayer" and that the title track is to be released slightly
before. Also the same track is to feature in a Pepsi commercial
which is to premiered on ITV during 'The Bill' at 8.12pm. And finally
that one of the LP tracks is a collaboration with Prince.

    Can anyone tell me more?

Also I'd like to know about her stateside discography, i.e. what
has been released over there, but not here.

RE: U.S. versus Europe Madonna discography...

I just returned from Europe 2 days ago and spent some time
browsing through record shops while on vacation. There is a Madonna
CD in Europe (basically an EP of very early recordings) which is not
available in the U.S. I had the CD in my hand but decided not to
take the gamble and purchase it. Other than that, the CONTENT of
releases is the same on both sides of the Atlantic. However, the
first release by Madonna is simply called "Madonna" in the U.S.,
although the title is "Madonna The First Album" in Europe. The cover
art on the first album varies greatly as well. The European version
offers a rather attractive color photo of Madonna, while the U.S.
cover displays a black and white photo of Madonna with leather,
chains, bleached white hair, and a face that indicates she may
have had too much to drink the night before and is regretting it!!!!

    Madonna - Madonna LP

The Madonna 'Madonna' LP was also released in the UK but flopped,
then when the "Like A Virgin" LP became massive the 'Madonna' LP
was re-released with a new cover and re-titled 'The First Album'

This initial release is very rare but I do have the cassette version.

I think the EP you mentioned is the one with Otto Von Werhner and
I strongly recommend anyone to keep away from this. It is unbelievably
crap !!! There are various formats including coloured vinyl 12",
12" picture dis and CD single. The tracks are just various mixes
of "Wild Dancing", "Cosmic Climb" and "We are The Gods". all these
tracks are a joke. Madonna only did the backing for some songs
back in the early eighties and now they have turned up remixed so
that it sounds as if Madonna was lead vocal. Receiver Records trying
to cash in. Is this the one you were on about?

Q1...I have both the Canadian and the UK 12" of borderline. Both
have different covers and different tracks.
The Canadian 12" contains New Remixes of "Borderline" and "Lucky
Star" and the UK 12" contains US Remix and Dub Remixes of
"Borderline" and the full length version of "Physical Attraction"
The US Remix is 56 seconds shorter than the actual Canadian release.

Is the Dub Remix of "Borderline" available in the USA ?

    Q2...Also I have 3 x 12"s of "Holiday". The 2 UK covers include
one with a picture of an English train, and the other has white
backing with a circular picture of Madonna (Same photo session as
the 1st album cover). The 3rd 12" is from Germany (I think!!) and
has a blue background with a 7" square picture of Madonna in the
       centre.

What does the US sleeve look like ?

Q3...In The UK there are many limited edition picture dics, shaped,
7" and 12". (Crazy For You 7" Picture disc is worth about 30 pounds)

What limited editions are available over there? And especially
What releases were ther of "Burning Up" ?

I have the US 12" only (It's my favourite song.)

Q4...I know that "Sidewalk Talk" reached No.18 in the USA but it
is not available over here except a funhouse mix on a Jellybean
12" and an extended Version on a Jellybean compilation LP. Also
the Jellybean LP "Wotupski" on which it feature is not available
       over here.

What version is featured on the "Wotupski" LP ?, what other
versions are available and what what the B-side of the single?, (Was
    Madonna on the sleeve?)

Yes, I raised an eyebrow when I read this as well.

What is meant by "most successful"?

If it means "sold the most records" then I doubt that. If it means
"made the most money" then again I doubt it - she's not been around
long enough. If it means "gets the most job satisfaction from career"
then that may well be true but you would have no way of knowing!

Yup, I totally agree. It was more a bit of fun than anything else. I
guess I might have been thinking too much about some of the other real
"rat-holes" than some topics have gone down; I'll leave you to recall
    those!!!!

She's just signed up to do some ads for Coke I think. Her recent
output has been too based around soundtracks etc, and this Coke
tie-up seems to be carrying that one. What happend to all those
great hit singles that she had; has she lost the market niche,
    that she onec owned.

Madonna has not released any singles for ages, which is why there have
been no recent hits. In the U.S., Coke or Pepsi is promoting the
"world premiere" of her new single, "Like A Prayer" on television March
    2. Actually, I have read in a national U.S. newspaper (Parade)
that the most successful female pop singer (in terms of record sales)
is Linda Rondstadt. She has sold more records than Diana Ross (as a
soloist), Streisand, and all of the other big names.

The roman kathlic top guy is is quite happy with Madonna and her

They've renamed the cola brand to "popesi-cola"
So we can say that the image is restored, and we'll soon see the

The b-side to `Vogue' will be the US single remix of `Keep It Together'
(No 15 at present). The review in Smash Hits is bad saying the single
is way under par for her usual standard. Supposed to be a slow House
thingy. But a small feature in there says that the film Dick Tracy is
good (makes a change!). If the single is released in the US it must
have a different b-side - wonder what it is.

Tracks on the 7" and cassingle are `Vogue' (single version) and `Keep

12" version and `Keep It Together' (12" remix). The 12" isn't out yet,
the bloke in Our Price reckons next week.

I expect there will be a remix 12" out in the future, if not two, as
this has been the trend in the industry lately.

It'll be interesting to see what is on the b-side if it is released in

I'm not impressed. It's run of the mill, with a catchy verse and a

`Crazy For You' and `Like A Virgin'. It was obviously recorded on the
Virgin Tour ('85), but the arrangements are different to those on the
video, making it well listenable. The quality is OK, but Madonna
    sounds like Minnie Mouse.

The record itself is marbled grey vinyl and comes with labels, ready

The Maddy LP is a bit of a shock. Vogue is the only comtemporary track

I'm into the LP!!! (Well a bit anyway)

Each time I listen to it my mind conjours up visions of what the film
will be like. Those who read Melody Maker will have seen the
review/slating it got, while NME gave it 6 out of 10 saying it was a
good soundtrack, but not a good Madonna LP. I disagree with Melody
Maker, they said the songs were second rate and that Madonna is of no
comparison vocally to those who do this sort thing all the time. I
thought the vocals were great, the most expressive or comical yet.

Songs such as `I Go Bananas' and `Cry Baby' show her potential acting
    talent.

I still reckon no-one ought to buy the LP, buy watch the film, it's
going to be massive, and rightly so!

ps. Looking in the current Record Collector, if any of you have any
early Madonna records, such as `Like A Virgin', `Lucky Star', `Holiday'
etc or any Picture Discs, you'd be surprised at the value. `Gambler'
12" goes for between #15 and #20! Some of the picture discs go for up
    to #40!!! Get 'em sold.

An acetate is a heavy metal disc covered in vinyl used as the studio
master copy to press futher records, or as just a test pressing.

They are usually one-offs and so can fetch quite a bit!

There seems to be a good explaination of acetates in 617.14, though it doesn't
mention anything about metal.

353.58Collecting MadonnaIGETIT::BROWNMTechnoterribleMon Jun 04 1990 22:1135
    Jan,

The most collectable Madonna item is the `Crazy For You' shaped picture
disc. It now goes for between 25 and 45 pounds. There are all sorts
of rarities though, such as the promo packages for the last 2 LP's.
Prices for those start at around 100 pounds. There is a 14 track
compilation Video and cassette called `It's That Girl'. It came out in
'87 to commemorate the world tour. There are 100 videos and 400 cassettes.
The cassette rose in value from 20 pounds to 80 pounds after just 1
month on promo release. (ps. I had a copy of this stolen - boo hoo!).
The video is worth slightly more, but both are very hard to find.

The best one to get hold of though is the UK 12" and 7" of `Everybody'.
This was released in the UK with no cover, so that people would assume
she was black, and proceded to flop. The label is Warner Bros, as
opposed to Sire and the record fetches quite a lot of money at
auctions. ie. 45 quid for the 7". I have never seen the 12" on sale.
Of course the music fron the 12" is duplicated on the US 12", which is
dead easy to get on import. The 7" contains an exclusive mix of
`Everybody', ie the (Dub Edit). The dub version on the 12" is 9
    minutes plus in length.

Also the 12" of Gambler goes for 20 quid (and it made No4 in the UK
charts!). There is a poster sleever 7" too.

There are plenty of records that are worth about 5 times what they cost
when they came out, such as the pictures discs and remixes. But the
important thing to note is that their values have doubled in only the
    last year or so.

I have a Record Collector which features Madonna if you want a photstat.

The LP is sort of different to any record I have ever bought, borrow or
listened to. As you know Hanky Panky is up-beat, and funky, with a
little perviness plus some comedy mixed in too.

There's a track called `I'm going bananas' which is Madonna doing her
best mexican/spanish voice, saying how `loco' she is.

"I'm going bananas, and it feels like my poor little brain is being
    devoured by Piranahs (sp)" etc.

Then you have my favourite `Cry Baby' where she does her best Betty
Boop accent to a 30s style backing track. (like the music at the start
    of Jeeves and Wooster).

The whole LP is full of acting, rather than singing. It's all cabaret,
show biz stuff. On certain songs you can imagine her kicking a leg in
the air as the orchestra `hits'! It really does make you imagine her
actually being on stage doing each number.

I really like the LP now, and I've decided it's a work of complete and
utter genious. The film is out a week on Friday around the country
(UK), but I'll be in Wembley watching the real thing!

BTW. All of the `I'm Breathless' LP is unlike everything else she's

    Q Sound.

This Q Sound is wonderful. There's quite a bit of difference between
the original recordings and those on this LP that have been processed.
Effects, such as various echos and reverbs have been put onto her
vocals in places, but the main difference is that everything sounds
really really sharp and clear. You can hear every instrument with
great ease. eg. I noticed a roaring guitar on Lucky Star - I've been
listening to that song for 5 years!

I think Q Sound will be used on every release in the near future,
depending on the cost to the consumer. It's a bit like the difference
    between vinyl and CD.

I got the Willian Orbit remix of `Justify My Love' last night. Thank
    **** for xmas shopping.

I like most of what I've heard of William Orbit. His work with Erasure
is pretty damn good, and his band, Bass-o-matic, have cone up with a
couple of great songs with great arrangments.

    However, I don't like this remix.  It starts with the words;

    "C'mon, you can f*** me"

No thanks, I don't fancy you and anyway I'm too pi$$ed. You can tell
the mix is William Orbit by all the bleeps (not Techno House bleep, but
William Orbit type bleep). He's done a lot of work on the mix, but
it's too much. He's stripped away what was good about the song - it's
shuffling, laidback, but groovy rhythm. All the sexiness has gone.
Lenny Kravitz's backing vocals are almost missing. The rhythm he's put
in place sounds like it's jumping every so often. You can't really
dance to it because it keeps stopping and starting.

I must say I'm dissapointed with this mix, and with the fact that good
remixes of Madonna stuff are few and far between nowadays. (`Vogue'
came in some good mixes, though.)

I wanna do a remix of this? I've just made a New Year's resolution:

With a sampler and keyboard I could do amazing things. You can over
dub your own or other songs, loop, make the music go backwards etc.
The only thing you can't do is strip it down. I going to get this
stuff anyway, so I can make my own music.

If I had some decks then I'd want to start DJing. But I'd need a van,
amd a driving licence. So the whole outlay would be less than getting
    a keyboard, sampler and computer.

For amazing results (even at low temperatures!), you would need:

A good sampler, AKAI etc. A full size MIDI keyboard, pref. Roland,
Yamaha cos then you could use its own voices on top of the samples
(bass lines etc). And computer + Sequencing software + MIDI interface.
Not forgetting of course, Amp, speakers and a decent tape deck(DAT ;-))

An associate of mine has the above and more, and the results are
(loin stirringly) excellent. All I have is the computer 8-(, but I do
have some good sampling software for it which would be a good start for
the budding re-mixer. Quality and length of samples depends largely of
the amount of memory the computer has, but some good results can be
    achieved.

I think your next move Matty should be to buy a computer (Atari ST or
Commodore Amiga), because you will have 1 component of the system and
will also be able to practice sampling and of course play games!!

IMO those little Yammy toy keyboard/samplers are a waste of money!

sampler, but it costs double ie. 1700 quid! But the W30 has a 16 track
sequencer, so I could do without the computer, but I'd rather have a
computer based sequencer. I could really do with a W30 without the
sequencer - they always add too much.

Do you know any DJ's that use a Sampler, or even a keyboard at gigs?
I've always thought it would be a good idea, but I've never seen any
one do it. You could just take a drum machine and bass machine with a
tempo control. You could use it to match songs/beats. A Sampler would
    add spice.

    Matty,

Really once you have bought a good full size keyboard all you need do
then is buy modules and Midi them through, you only need one slave
keyboard you can then connect this to your sampler, drum machine,
    modules and sequencer.

My friend who is a *budding* DJ, has a Vestax mixer with built in
sampler! don't suppose it was the sort of sampler you ment, but he can
create some good effects with it.... As for a drum machine, I was once
shown (at Streetwise in town) one designed for DJs. It was battery
powered and pluged into to the mic jack, it had nice samples but was a
bit fiddley and limited - a good idea but I don't know anyone that uses
    one.

    Craig.

    Matty,

A friend of mine used to have a keyboard sampler along with his DJ set.
He would usually use it at parties and get someone with a dictaphone to
go round and pick up noises/voices from the party, feed them into the
sampler and then add them to the record playing. Came up with some
    interesting ones.

`Rescue Me' is not to be released as yet, except for in the USA.
Instead `Crazy For You'/`Keep It Together' will be released with `Into
The Groove' (You Can Dance Version) on the 12"

    I reckon this will go to No1 for 3 reasons;

    1.	It's not on any of her LP's and has been difficult to get for
    	years.

    2.	In most fan polls, `Crazy..' is the overall *favourite* Madonna
song. I know loads of heavy rockers who love this.

    3.	It is the second most seductive record ever (fact), only preceeded
    	by Phylis Nelson's `Move Closer'.

If they release a video (a decent video that is) is will stay on the
top spot for a while. The only thing that can stop it is James' `Sit
    Down'!!!

The NME this week publishes a very racey, explicit interview with
Madonna. The interviewer is another previous lover of Warren Beatty.
Most is unrepeatable in here, suffice it to say she's looking for a man
and is coinsidering all offers. She also likes to get letters. Even
better if same letters are from `writers'.

She's showing us all how kinky she can be. I think she's running out

songs or she'll be down the dumper (as Neil Tennant used to say). But

Are we to feel sorry for the poor dear that she had to sit through a
whole day of journalists asking her the same questions, one after
    another?

I assume they didn't use armlocks to force her to limit herself to a
single day with the press? In which case, her boredom is her own
problem, not that of her interviewers or audience.

Professional show-people can come across however they want, no matter
how bored they are. Shame Madonna couldn't.

353.112Thumbs downKERNEL::WILLIAMSJThu Jul 25 1991 15:3918
In my personal opinion of course, I felt Madonna didn't really open
up to Wogan in any way whatsoever. His 'safe' questions were answered
with a 'yes' or 'no' or when she put some effort in thinking about
the questions asked, actually managed a lame "urrrr, no, I don't
    think so".

Yes, she did come across as very strong willed and knew exactly what
she wanted but I think the viewers would have been a bit more enchanted
with her if she actually expressed some of her doubts or indecisions
rather than always being so cock-sure of herself.

And if I was her manager, I'd advise her to sit up properly on that
plush settee. The way she was sprawled out on it didn't really do
    anything for her.

    In my opinion of course.

I don't think that Wogan is a good interviewer anyway. He seems to like

Lucky old me, I happened to catch a brief clip on French TV last night of
Madonna's appearance at the Jean-Paul Gaultier (pointy bra supplier) show
in Los Angeles at the weekend.

Herself is seen at the end of the catwalk beside JP. She's wearing a black
jacket, which removes to dramatically reveal... an extreme no-bra situation!
Jubilation among the assembled hacks, let me tell you, and this viewer didn't
object either. By the way, she also sports a front gold tooth these days,
continuing the pop star tradition for show-off dentistry (see also: Mick
Hucknall, Mick Jagger).

I imagine the publicity for this incident will do no harm for her forth-
coming lp 'Erotica' and photo book 'Sex' - as if they needed more publicity.
