342.0. "BPI awards comedy programme" by NZAFS1::MACFADYEN (Requiring only money and taste) Tue Feb 14 1989 15:19

Did anyone see the BPI awards on Beeb 1 last night? What a shambles!

The organisers evidently thought it would be a good joke to team Mick
Fleetwood (6' 4" and no hair) with Smamfa Fox (4' 6" and pink hair) as
presenters, but it just looked stupid. The organisation was chaotic,
particularly when the Best Album (?) award came up: Ronnie Wood was
about dive straight in and announce the winner when Bruno Brooks
stopped him with the heavy hint "Don't you want to wait till we've seen
the nominees?". This was the obvious cue for the BBC to show clips from
all the nominated albums, but absolutely nothing happened for a minute,
so Ronnie took the initiative, announced he was "gonna go for it" and
announced the winner. Which I've forgotten.

Mark Knopfler and some other star announced the setting up of a City
technology college for music, with Kenneth Baker the Education Sec
grinning like a Cheshire cat up in the gallery. He got promptly booed
by the assembled Brosettes in the audience - my respect for them
    increased tenfold.

There were the usual embarrassing accolades - "I'd like to thank my
producer <name>, record company <name>, tax accountant <name>" - and
apologies - "<name> is real sorry he can't be here tonight to accept
this wonderful award since he's got an important appointment somewhere,
anywhere else" - and acceptance speeches - "I'd just like to say what a
wonderful audience yew are" (Tina Turner).

Finally, the BPI gave some Amazingly Important and Wonderful award
to Cliff Richard, who then embarrassed everyone by a long speech
in which he apologised to Kenneth Baker for him having been booed.
    Cliff promptly got booed.

I don't think we need to worry about young people today - they've got
    their heads screwed on.

I was suspicious about how this might be when I noticed the programme
title in the paper - " Brits 88". I loathe that expression. I
also checked to see if there was a simul-broadcast on Radio 1 (as
    there usually is) but no.

It was a total shambles from start to finish. Whoever dreamt
up the idea of pairing Sam Fox with Mick Fleetwood should be sacked.
Not only did they look totally ridiculous, they were absolutely terrible.

Not that they can be blamed for some of the monumentous cock-ups,
but experienced presenters could have covered over many of these
    awkward moments.

I couldn't last out to the end - had to switch off from pure
    embarrassment.

I don't think it was fair of the audience to boo anyone, even a
conservative politician. Cliff was right in telling them to grow up.

Apart from that, yes it was horrible. Did anybody else think that the
programme was created with a view to selling it to the Americans? They
usually have two useless comperes, and those little links every ten
minutes were ideal for ad breaks.

High spot of the evening: Realising that Tinita Tikaram sings like Tom
    Waits.

    	Lee.

It's always right to boo a Conservative politician -- ESPECIALLY
    Baker.

Yep, I did. In fact, if anyone else has, rewind it to the bit
where Tinita does her solo bit, and notice the way the accordion
player keeps giving her passionate looks. Makes good viewing.
Mind you, she was missing it all cos she kept her eyes shut - probably
to try to block out the awfulness of it all.

Apart from the embarassment of watching it, I wish the winners
would accept their awards a bit more graciously. True, nerves
were probably to blame, but when you get Fairground Attraction
coming up and grabbing the award falling about giggling, it does
nothing for their image. What a world of difference it was when
Phil Collins etc came up. A true professional - mind you I guess
he has had years of experience.

Another thing - if so many award winners "couldn't be here to collect
the award", why hold it on that day? They must know the winners
quite far in advance, but surely the logistics should be suited
to them rather than the hangers on??

That's always assuming they could be bothered to turn up to a tacky
little presentation in this insignificant island. After all, we're
not talking Grammies here are we?

Damn, I missed all but the last half hour - mind yew, that was bad
enough, the most embarassing bit being Cliff's speech.

Not that I'm a particular fan of the guy, but I thought, up until
about two thirds of the way through the pre-cliff "who's it going
to be?" windup, it was gonna be ol'Eric (more desevedly it would
have been, too) - still, if all you've got to do is be around for
    30 years, he'll get it in about }oooh{ 1994/5?

Wasn't that Randy Newman/Knopfler supergroup bit at the end totally
    *FLAT*????

I missed Tanita, but would have liked to hear her impersonation
of Tom Waits (one of my favourite singers)......

Anyone have any thoughts on last nights BPI awards prog?

. Who had the sense of humour to choose that Cat Stevens track?

. What was the point of the nauseating Ice Maiden sequence?

It really seemded (again) to be a list of who has made the most money
in the last year, and who had the most success in the states (FYC).

    Hmmm

Less fun than last year's! :^)

The TV version was obviously hacked together in a totally different
format to the actual event (Seen by KM's way of introducing Lisa
Stansfield as if she hadn't even been mentioned before when we'd
just seen her collect her award).

I didn't really see the point of the Thatcher bit.Whatever you
think of her, I can see no connection between her and the music
    industry.

The clips with music (a la Rock 'n' Roll years) was good and some
of the musicians came across well (not Soul II Soul who exhibited
their true talent level by having to mime!).

Ok as this sort of thing go, certainly not as purile as the Smash
Hits award (puke, puke!) and a vast improvement on last year's fiasco.

342.15What's the point?SHAPES::BROWNMDoncaster: we gave you Jive BunnyTue Feb 20 1990 14:5817
I thought Phil Collins was good playing on the spot like that. Also it
was funny to hear Lisa Stansfield's Rochdale accent. She just looks
    like she comes from London.

I want to know why Madonna wasn't a nominee for Best International
Artist, and it seems a bit weird that the Phil Collins record was
chosen as the Best Single. There must have been at least 20 records
that sold more during '89, and therefore there were at least 20 records
that were more popular. I don't know who votes for these awards, but
    they want shooting.

Awards like these should reflect a true cross section of the public. A
mate suggested they should have forms in record shops for people to
fill in when they buy a record. You couldn't get fairer than that!

    Matty,

The best single was the result of a postal ballot to select the
best 32, then a 4 day phone poll of 8 tracks a day to select the
best 8 out of the 32, then a further phone poll on the last day
of the week to determine the winner of the 8.

Err... I very much doubt if Phil played on the spot, no matter how it
    was set up.

i used to get real angry about these shows, but there is no point.
Independent labels are not elligible (because they are independent of
the BPI - I think), so Factory never qualify for a record award - tho
True Faith won viddy award a couple of years ago. On that basis, most
of the best music produced just doesn't get entered.
Like I said, the awards go to whoever has made the most money, not the
    best records.

    There is an upside to indies not getting anywhere in these awards;
as an independent company, all releases on PWL are excluded. Poor
old Pete Waterman's bitterness on this almost verges on paranoia.

FYC & Roland Gift are c**p

remember seeing an article in one of the tabloids a couple of months ago, the
basic gist of it is...

the Sons of Glyndwr (sp) were burning down homes owned by the English in Wales.
Gift praised them for doing so, adding that folk in Scotland should do the same.

the next day a rival paper picked up on the fact that Gift own four houses in
UK as well as a remote cottage in New Zealand (plus flats in NY & other
european cities).

I can well believe old Roland said that. Remember what I said in a few
notes back - about him being big headed and egotistical..... the guy
    definitely needs his head examining.

Mind you having said that, I was listening to one of their records on
the radio the other day, and it came to me how similar his voice is to
the lead singer of the Christians..... Has anyone else noticed the
similarity? So, he can't be all THAT bad.

Well, I suppose there is some tonal similarity, although for my
money Garry Christian sings a lot better, his voice is much richer
and he has a better range. Roland gift always sounds a bit strangulated
to me - I always wanna grab him by the throat and tell him to open
up an sing, dammit. Sorry, his voice just gets on my nerves.
