337.0. "Alan Murphy /Mike + Mechanics" by 51847::SANDGREN (Be Careful With That VAX, Eugene...) Thu Feb 09 1989 13:48

    Hi,

I just bought the new LP from Mike + Mechanics, and I must say I'm
disappointed with it; - the music is much more computerized, Mike
Rutherford doesn't play his old strong bass lines, I'm not sure
that he plays at all, the drums might as well be drum machine, the
    songs are boring, BUT:

There is a guitar, an incredible 'bended' one, and it was on the
first LP as well; at that time, I thought it was MR playing it,
but I don't think it is, it's not his style really; - another gui-
tarist is mentioned on both LP's, must be him, his name is ALAN
    MURPHY.

Anybody know this ALAN MURPY? Has he been playing on any other re-
cordings? Does he play in a band, or is he just a studio freak?

    Answers and opinions are appreciated...

Alan Murphy gets around a bit! He played with... damn! The name's
    gone completely...

Anyway, he's recently been playing with Level 42. He's one hot guitar
    player...

Nick, you've must have been listening to Greenslade again!

Alan Murphy was formally with Go West.

    Hi again,

Ken, thank you for your input, how many albums did Go West do (or,
are they available on CD, does the band still exist?) Is Alan Murphy
playing on the last Level 42, instead of the earlier guitarist?
I think his style reminds me a bit of Alan Holdsworth...

Greenslade, that must be an internal joke! I know the four albums with
Greenslade, I've got them myself (they had this incredible bass
player, I don't remember his name).

Thank you Ken - that was driving me nuts!

    Go West, young man, indeed.

As for Alan with Level 42, I know he's been playing with them on
their current tour. Have they got a new album out? (ever since I
turned 30 I've been forgetting things... now where was I...?). Oh
yes, if they've got a new album out then he's on it. If they
    haven't.... <insert ribald comment here>

Not totally relevant, but Mike and the Mechanics is one of these
names (for me, like Meatloaf) which just doesn't sound right at
all - anyone agree. I'd expect a band with a name like this to
be down the local pub, but not at the top of the charts. They'll
    probably get dead big now!!!
