321.0. "The Blue Nile Notes" by YUPPY::GARDNER (He who dies with the most toys wins...) Mon Jan 23 1989 22:15

Seeing as I can't find a note on THE BLUE NILE, I thought I'd start
    one.

Does anybody have any comments on the little known Scottish Band.
The Album 'A Walk Across The Rooftops' is absolutely cracking -
are there rumours of a new release !??????

I read in the NME a while back that they are recording a new
album at the moment, but they seem to have been working on it for
qute a few years!! Aren't they signed to a strange record label,
or am I thinking of someone else?

They're signed to Linn Records of Glasgow, obviously and independant.
Their second album is slotted for release this summer, and I even
saw mention somewhere of a tour to promote it. Hope it's as good
as their debut - incidentally, can anyone tell me if A WALK ACROSS
THE ROOFTOPS is available on CD? I'd *love* to hear this on CD.

Aren't they the same LINN who make HiFi's?

Have Blue Nile ever played live? I once read that they are the
favourit eband of the guy from Prefab Sprout (Paddy whotsit).

Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprout is into The Blue Nile - now, not
a lot of people know that ;-)

I'm really not sure if Linn Records have any connection with the
turntable manufacturers of the same name, but in reply to your other
question, I'm almost certain that they've performed live before,
albeit probably in a more local (i.e. Glasgow) sense.

I'd love to see them 'live', but have my doubts about how they could
possibly reproduce the kind of atmosphere their album creates (sparse
    is probably a good description).
321.5do I love you - yes I love you57133::ROBINSONTue Jan 24 1989 20:568

To answer a previous question YES the Blue Nile album "Walk Across
the Roof-tops" is available on cd - on either Virgin or Beggars
Banquet (in the UK) or A&M in the US. I keep hearing that they
are making a new album but never any specifics.

I also learned yesterday during a chance conversation, that a track
of theirs ('Tinseltown' more than likely) appears on a CD sampler
    issued by "Q" magazine.

Can someone confirm this, and also maybe give me an idea of what
other stuff is on this sampler? Also price/availability.

    Cheers!

The Linn record label is owned by the HiFi manufacturers Linn. I
think they have a few more artists recording with them.

I bought a single, and I'm not terribly fond of it. Is the album
    better ?

    Mark.

Which single was it that you bought? If it was STAY, then I can
kinda understand why you weren't *too* taken on with it, and hence
why you're a tad wary of what an album of theirs would be like.
However, if it TINSELTOWN, then all I can say is if you don't like
this, then you most definately would not like the rest of the LP.
As far as I know, these were the only two tracks released as singles.

meant "Walk acrosss rooftops" I think. Anway, it's good value.

Good value? Do you mean that it has extra tracks on CD from the
    album, or what?

BTW, I was most impressed with the bass sound on TINSELTOWN during
my CD demo last Sat. It stood out really well - something I believe
was lacking on the early (Linn) pressings of the album.

This is a *must* have on CD (drool).

Heh, heh - it is available on CD, on Virgin (as opposed to Linn).
    Unfortunately it's a full-price job, but what the heck....it's
    a classic!

Re. a few back, from the stony silence, can I assume that no one
can give me an idea of what else is on the 'Q' magazine CD sampler
    apart from TINSELTOWN?

re -.1 that's 'Walk Across the Rooftops' not 'Tinseltown' and alas
it is the same version that is on the cd of the same name - but
I hear that the 12" of 'Stay' is different from the cd version -
    anyone know for sure.

Ahh it seems like the new release is very nearly upon us !!

Theres an article by 'The Thinking Popster' David Belcher in
todays Glasgow Herald on Calum Malcolm - who ,if you don't know,
is producer and collaborator on The Blue Nile's 'A Walk Across
    The Rooftops' .

At the moment he's locked deep in his Castle Sound studio working
on the next Blue Nile LP which ,although there's no official release
date yet , seems almost certain to be this year .In fact by the
tone of this article I'm hopeful we'll be hearing something soon.

Ah but the Thinking Popsters beat us to it and makes us all green
with envy .... I quote ' ... a track from the frothcoming Blue
Nile album: I undergo an epiphany, forget my own name , and experience
the force of a Mexican volcano. Calum and Blue Nile conquer again"

Definetly the best band Glasgow has ever produced. Years ahead of
their time. Pity it seems to take years for them to produce on a
regular basis. 6 years since the first, last and only masterpiece.

When I attended Gabriel's concert in the tin shack in Glasgow he
slapped the album on before the concert and played both sides, they
whole place got going even then. Superb support. ( N'Dour was pretty
    good as well BTW)

I saw an interview with Gabriel immeadiatley after he had accepted
his Best album of the year award. When asked who he would of given
it to he replied.. " to a band that probably no one has heard of,
The Blue Nile". That was three years after it was released.

He took his time finding it but I think he enjoyed it. Maybe there
is hope for the rest of humanity, to die in ignorance of this you
may as well never have lived.

After 3 years in the wilderness of popular music, in the depths of which I have
seen myself dredge the decades gone by for the quality music proffered then
with seemingly greater quantity, quality and variety my wait has ended. The
Blue Nile is flowing again.

The Blue Nile turned the music world on its head 5 years ago by writing,
recording and producing a record that crystallised for many, including myself
what music was always meant to. All great works of art manage to tear the
beholder open and force him to examine his soul. The Blue Nile first achieved
this within the medium of popular music 5 years ago and now they have managed
it again.

The album is a superb collection of moody soul searching songs arranged superbly
in the Blue Nile's very individual but oft repeated sparse orchestrated style.
One only has to listen to bands such as Tears for Fears to understand how much
of an influence this band has had on the late eighties minimalist approach to
electric orchestrations. Paul Buchanan's voice is as haunting as ever adding
an incalculable amount to the end result. Surely one of the most raw and
searching voices of popular music.

An album of supreme quality but I do not think I will last another 5 years, so
please guys, keep the Nile flowing.

Nick.

It is the bands choice to leave out the lyrics, something to do with
enjoying the music as it is played without the sacrilous act of reading
the words as the music plays so disjointing one part of the recording
    from the other.

Seems feasible enough I mean ould you sit/stand at a concert with a
    lyric sheet ?
