Re: the comment around the Waterboys lp

    What rot !!

Okay, so it is a significant move away from the excellent, but very
over produced 'This is the Sea' lp. But it is one of the very few
records released this year which actually lives and breathes, 'Little
Child', 'Strange Boat' and 'A Bang on the Ear' will no doubt come
    January/February become crowd favourites.

They could of so easily slid into the U2, Simple Minds et al anthemetic
main stream, but no, a backward leap towards their very 'roots'
has ensured that they will not dissapoint me for a very long time
    yet !

    Cheers,

Johnny (certainly not 'A Girl called Johnny')

301.19sorry for the rat_hole!!!OFFCLU::DKEATINGThu Dec 22 1988 20:2123
    re .17,.18

I can see both your points of view. Though I think the term
'rot' might be a bit OTT. I also know of people who had been
listening to studio pre-release tapes for over the last two years
and were disappointed with the final selections. But the problem
was that somethings had to be left out. I think they were correct
in going for a 'mix' as it would appeal to a more general audience.
I to have favourite tracks from the album but overall I like the
general idea of music and mood change right through.

BTW the Waterboys are playing tonight and tomorrow night in Seapoint
here in Galway. They have played this venue at least twice before
and have given some of the best 'live' performances ever seen here
in Galway. One time they played for something like 3 hours without
loseing the 'tempo'. Tomorrow we break up here for Christmas and
instead of me going on the usual 'xmas drinking spree' I'm saving
my money for this concert. I'm going to ENJOY myself for a change
    ;-)

    - Dave.
ps to all in here have a happy christmas and a peaceful new year.

301.20And a bang on the ear?45610::FIDDLERMThu Dec 22 1988 20:2316

Sorry to drift away from the base topic, but..

I didn't mean that the Waterboys lp is actually bad, but it sounds
'over produced', it seems to lack a little sparkle, having seen
tham live a few times, and having a live performance of Fishermans
Blues on video for three years, I was upset wit the record. Perhaps
I just expected too much. Many of the songs wiil no doubt be brilliant
in a live/raucous environment, and I shall be first in the queue
for tickets in the new year! It still rates as one of my favourite
lps of the year, but not the best.

    Merry Crimble to all.
