221.0. "Monterey Pop - Tonight Radio 1 7pm-2am" by MALLET::BARKER (Pretty Damn Cosmic) Fri Sep 30 1988 16:10

I just found out this morning that the BBC is broadcasting the Monterey
Pop festival from 7pm to 2am on Radio 1 in stereo . This is of course 21 years
after the event. An excellent documentary film called 'Monterey Pop' was
released years ago and was even on channel 4 in the past year. What the BBC are
broadcasting apparently are the live tapes from this the first pop festival.

Acts include :- Mamas & Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead,
Quicksilver Messenger Service, Who, Jimi Hendrix etc etc etc in fact almost
everyone that was anyone in West Coast/'psychedelic music' in 1967. Judging
from the film this should be amazing.

The reason that I am posting this note is firstly to bring it to
everyone's attention but also make an appeal. Due to a prior engagement I will
not be able to tape this (for private use only ) and would be grateful if
anyone who does tape it(for private use only) could let me know as this looks
like a once in a lifetime chance to listen to this (not likely to be repeated
on the radio is it?). Even a tape of part would be something. Thanks.

in glorious wonderful stero (esp. the 'Dead bit) and what have I got ?

Seven bleeding hours of Radio 2 !!!!

When did Radio 1 change frequencies ? and (more to the point) why
didn't they send me a letter explaining Why and When ?

An interesting bit of trivia related to The Monterey Pop Festival
is that The Who refused to have Jimi Hendrix go on before them.
Apparently, Hendrix had opened for The Who on numerous occasions
in the UK when Jimi was still a relatively obscure artist. At
Monterey, Townshend and Hendrix were talking backstage [Hendrix
was supposed to go on first] and Townshend said that The Who would
not let The Experience be the opening act, but that they would open
for Hendrix [quite an honor coming from ol' Pete]. Jimi was so
flattered by this that he said, "OK, then I'm gonna pull out all
the stops", and he proceeded to do his [probably] best known per-
formance -- complete with burning his guitar, etc.

This was said in an interview with Townsend during a Hendrix
story type film/video - I've got the thing on video at home
	- but it's beta format and I've only got VHS now :-(. It was
about the first TV prog I videoed - great Hendrix stuff ...

Anyway .. from what I remember of the interview it was
Pete and Jimi arguing about who would go on first as neither
act wanted to follow the other - when Hendrix agreed to go
second he said "In that case I'm gonna pull *all* the stops"
	... and he did.

Yes - some great concert footage ..... really excellent, especially
    from the German gigs.

They didn't show the other side of her - the film content was
controlled to a large extent by the Joplin estate.

It was great to see someone who hasn't been featured that much in
    the media over the years.

    David.

    >> They didn't show the other side of her - the film content was

Which other side of her do you mean, David? I know, for instance,
that no mention was made in the film of her drug abuse or the
circumstances of her death (in fact, if you didn't know she *was*
dead, the film didn't tell you......did it?)

Anyway, she came across, to me, as someone who was a bit sad and
vulnerable, who was only really happy out there in front of the
    band.......
