209.0. "Classic Videos" by KERNEL::IMBIERSKI (Three views of a secret) Tue Sep 20 1988 20:43

In the 'Fish Heads' note we got on to the subject of wierd videos
and this led me to think of all the videos I've seen that have
impressed me one way or another. There is already a note entitled
'Music videos past and present' but most of the replies to that
tended to talk about videos of live gigs, etc that you could buy
    and play at home.

I'm thinking along the lines of promo videos that accompanied singles-
in my view most of them are pretty bland but a few have really
    impressed me, eg:

Paul McCartney Coming Up - where he impersonates various well known
musicians all playing together - very cleverly done.

Also Cry by Godley and Creme which consists of several close up
shots of people's faces merging into one another - classic.

Another one is Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer which fostered a million
advert clones (and also PG's follow up Big Time).

Anyone else got suggestions for all-time classic videos??

    Tony

How about that recent Hugh Cornwell video (typically I forget the
song) where a plasticine model apparently lifesize is substituited
for our Hugh, which changes shape and all other things, the classic
part being where he kisses a girl and their heads mesh together
and then separate. Very impressive use of plasticine.

How about 'Touch of Grey' by The 'Dead...

Skeletons replacing the band 1 by 1 and then gradually turning back
into the original band at the end. the skeletons are full puppets
and a nice touch at the end is the shot of a skeleton working the
strings for the band members... brilliant! almost certainly the best
	of '87.

    Well, Tony.....
When I saw this note in the directory, I thought, hmmm...
    and came up with
    youve guessed it
    Sledgehammer, Coming Up, and Cry.
Also one by the Cars, I cant remember the song, but the video has
the singers head fling around atop an insects body.
Sitll recommending the collection of Residents videos, available
as a package, which includes parts of Vileness Fats, the classic
aforementioned Third Reich&Roll and loads of others - an hour of
    total mindwarp for a tenner!

The Cure's Close to Me. But Damnit, someone beat me to it. Anyway,
    I think it's a great video.

I like it because it was probably the most inovative videos of it's

Byrne and Gabriel are always creative without being pretentious

"Crackdown" and "Kino" by Cabaret Voltaire

		from _Gasoline_in_your_Eye_

	why?

Because this genre has been totally overlooked
(in my opinion) by the video makers...

		They are mini-documentaries in videos...no
dancing girls and very little of the group
		showing themselves off.

Were there two videos for that? When it was released, I saw a bizarre
video on "The Tube" that featured dwarves (if I remember correctly)
attacking an old piano frame using metal grinders, all set in a gloomy
wrecked warehouse. But whenever I've seen a video of it since, it's
been just a collection of objects - a hand, a ruler, and so on - not
    nearly as interesting.

Speaking of more recent videos, "Snub" had a feature on New Order that
included a clip from a video for one of the tracks off "Technique". This
video consisted of longish mono takes straight at a model's face, long
enough that she began to look uncomfortable, interspersed with very
short colour clips of cream being thrown over a bunch of tulips. Sounds
    daft, looked great.
