206.0. "US v. UK Music" by BISTRO::WARD () Fri Sep 16 1988 20:56

The following notes have been moved here from Note 174 - All Time
Hates. It would be nice if a proper discussion on US v. UK music
were to follow the first ten replies rather than a simple slagging
match. Sorry to be such a heavy-handed moderator but there has
been *alot* of crazy noting in this conference recently.

Anyway on with the subject ...

And yes, the U.S. is the only place to hear real (non plastic pop)
music. REM, the Cars, Van Halen, Metallica, Talking Heads, Frank
    Zappa.....the list goes on!

Now let's stop this silly arguement about which country has better
music, because they BOTH produce some excellent stuff. Remember
that there are other countries too: Rush:from Canada, U2:from Ireland,
The Scorpions:from Switzerland(I think) and so on and so forth....

I find these comments rather offensive. You seem to have a beef with
"rump rangers", don't tell me, as a child you bottie was poked by said
rangers or perhaps even one of the following fans The Cars, Van Halen,

This is an interesting subject and I hope we can discuss it without
getting personal (re -3 unless someone else gets in first 8^))

One of the main differences I perceive between UK and US music scenes
is the influence of the jazz world. Jazz in the US is BIG and attracts
a lot of the country's most accomplshed musicians away from the
pop/rock world. Eg if you want to hear some blistering geetar then
check out Mike Stern who plays with Miles Davies or Dave Sanbornes axe
man (Hiram Bullock ?? something like that 8^)).

In the UK if you want to make a serious impact in the music world then
the jazz scene is out of the question and you would probably find the
above mentioned guys in a rock band. This goes generally for anyone
in the business from singers to keyboard players to producers and
engineers. This country concentrates all its effort on the pop/rock
world with a result that that particular musical form is far advanced
from the states. In return the states is far advanced from us in
    the jazz field.

This is just an opinion (probably wrong again) but its open to comments
/criticism from anyone interested in a SENSIBLE discussion!!

    Cheers

US v UK is very parochial though, isnt it, considering the amount

so on. Good stuff knows no boundaries anyway, all this my country/your

206.17Some UK music is fake!EUCLID::OWENFri Sep 16 1988 23:5735
I'm sorry I called George Michael gay....let's let that rest.
I'd like to say something about his music and his music only.
His stuff is very plastic to say the least. It's just one simple
pop melody getting repeated throughtout the song. If I sat at a
keyboard for 1/2 hour, I'd come up with some catchy melodies myself.

I saw him in concert a couple of weeks ago. I really went in with
an open mind. I said, "well, I don't like his music, but I'll give
him a chance" I was actually looking forward to getting this "thing"
I have about his music away from me for good. I thought that maybe
after this I'd be able to listen to his music and even enjoy it.
    And so I went.

The show opened with an incredible lighting effect. I started to
get excited about seeing this man preform, maybe I have been wrong
about him all this time. But when the music started, I almost fell
asleep. He didn't play an instrument the whole time, and then he
did "faith", and he came out with his acoustic guitar. I thought,
OK, maybe he's a talented musician after all. One of his band was
also playing acoustic guitar. But once he started, I realize that
he wasn't playing the guitar at all, he just had his hand wrapped
around the neck and was "fake" strumming. And then half way through
the song, he through the guitar to a stagehand, and the sound didn't
    change at all!

All I could say was, "what a phoney, I payed good money to come
here and watch a man pretend he was playing guitar." What a fake!

This is how I feel about MUCH of the music that comes out of England
today, it's plastic, and fake, and contains no real talent what
so ever. Granted I absolutely love some of the music that comes
from the UK, it's just these people going to the top on their
audiences' ignorance that I don't like.

Geez, I thought I was finally reading a level-headed, sensible
posting about music from EUCLID::OWEN, then along comes that last
    paragraph. Oh well....

Granted, it's your opinion, but why slag most (much=most) of the
music coming out of the UK. How does it really differ from what's
coming out of the rest of the world? Peter Gabriel is one of your
favorite musicians, no? He's British, no? WTF?

Steve (aka EUCLID::OWEN),

You should not attempt to generalize like you're doing. I also am not
a big fan of the pop music out of Britain at the moment. But then again,
I'm not a big fan of the pop music coming out of the U.S. either. Why
is the U.K. so bad because they have George Michael, but the U.S. is OK,
even though we put Tiffany and Debbie Gibson in the Top Ten *at the same
time*?

Just try to be objective - bad music is bad no matter where it comes
from. And the same with good music. And no country has a monopoly on
either one!

    re -.1
I said that there is music from the UK that I love! and God knows
that there is music in the US that I hate. It just seems to me
(and maybe I'm wrong) that the current trend of music coming out
of England is aimed at a top-40 pop audience. Not to say that there
is none of that here in the US, I just see the concentration of
pop music amung successful artists is greater in the UK.

Listen, I love a lot of the music that comes from Europe and the
UK in particular, but I also love alot of stuff from the US.

I'm beginning to think this is becomming a shouting match between
different musical tastes regardless of the country the music came
from. Let's not have another revolutionary war over this.( but,
don't forget, we won it.......just kidding!)

    Steve,

The pop music coming out of England is aimed at pop music fans
The rock music coming out of England is aimed at rock music fans
The alternative music coming out of England is aimed at alternative
    music fans

You may substitute US, Ireland, France, Australia, Austria, Germany,
Sweden, Lichtenstein, et al for England.

No shouting match here. Respect the opinions of others, and they
will respect your opinion too. And please stop generalizing.

It seems to me that the record companies in both countries find
a formula and stick to it !!!

This is the case with S.A. & W. in England, and with the current
trend of female singers in the U.S.

I am sure there are lots of original acts in the US but where are
they ???? Most of the *new* bands look like clones of Van Halen,
etc, or are one off "super groups".

Anyway...i've said it before...the single charts are representative
of a tiny proportion of tiny (young) people. Therfore they are of
liitle interest to me or most of the noters, except that this
"music"(?) clogs up the airwaves and channels...so we don't get
to hear new and interesting sounds unless we go out and see them!!

I haven't really followed this one, but I've started to realise
why the yanks are so keen on nostalgia .... and still hero worshipping
a lot of the older bands. Perhaps it's because they (as a nation)

    In my honest opinion......
of those 5 mentioned in .31(?) I like two of them, dislike two of
them and can take or leave the last. It doesnt matter which though,
does it - after all , me shoving my taste down anyones throat wont
make them change their mind, will it? It seems stupid to me to carry
on in this particular vein, we should perhaps be trying to broaden
each others musical horizons by saying more than xxx is crap, yyy
is fab, by putting more reasoning and explanation forward.
After all, music is meant to be a shared experience isnt it?
Myself, Ive got so little time to listen to what I love and discover
new music, theres no time left to be bothered with what I dont want
to listen to - I just leave it to those that do like it.
And its good, no matter *where* it comes from ........

    blues music,jazz music,country'n'western,soul music,rock'n'roll,
    traditional,cajun....etc etc???

Why only America and UK? There are fine bands from Australia,Canada,
    mainland Europe,Afric even Ireland...

If you wanna talk music by 'location/culture' I suggest we start
talking about 'traditional' music after all 'rock'n'roll' is only
    some 30 odd years old.

    Quite right too Dave....!
I just wanna talk *music*, which is anything from the guy banging
the rocks together to present day technosplurge. Putting it in its
cultural/racial/historical place is interesting and often rewarding
e.g. in going bacwards from now, I'm discovering old blues, jazz
and folk, but the main thing is its all about listening toit, sharing
    it, loving it........

True, we Yanks do cling to our own "brand" I of music since,
like yours, it comes from our culture and our roots even if we did
get the seedlings from you. The way I see it, bands like the Beatles
and the Stones more or less created Rock and Roll. Then they exported
    it over here ....

........ then we fixed it and sent it back to you ! 8^) x 200

I'm not used to making non-violent replies ... don't worry though.
It was just a passing phase and I'm over it now.
