186.0. "Peter Gabriel" by LESLIE::LESLIE (Millions of Lemmings can't be wrong) Tue Aug 30 1988 17:10

Peter Gabriel has given me much pleasure over the many years since
I first saw him fronting for Genesis.

Apart from his annoying habit of being apocryphal in his album names,
he has produced consistently good music.

Ok muso's, a question. "Mercy Street" on "So" and "Cv" is dedicated
to "Anne Sexton". Who she? Any insight on the lyrics of this song
welcomed, Wendy and I found the video *extremely* puzzling, it seems
to tie in religion, death by drowning and ....?

186.2Pete plays WOMADDITHER::COTTONTue Aug 30 1988 20:0616

Old Pete made an appearance at the WOMAD festival last weekend.
He did the obligatory `Biko' number, but was redeemed when he did
`Sledgehammer'. He bought on a couple of guests to support him,
namely Youssou N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, both brilliant
    artistes.

Anybody else go to the WOMAD festival? Other performers worthy of
mention were Michelle-Shocked, Blurt and the Orchestre Super Matimila
featuring a witchdoctor from Tanzinia. `Music is the most effective
healing power' he said and well frankly I believe the guy. but
enough of this. We don't want another note going down the crapper,
eh? Back to Pete the Gabe.

    	Lee.

The great thing about "Biko" is that, although he sang it at Mandela,
it was recorded many years ago (his 3rd album). Probably one of
the few artists to really mean it at the time.

His soundtrack to "Birdy" is also very good ... atmospheric, even
though he reworks some of the old songs.

    David.

Anne Sexton (1928-1974) was an American poet who had many breakdowns.
Her psychiatrist reccomended to her to join a poetry workshop as
a form of therapy after her first suicide attempt in 1956. She was
in the process of writing a book when she died (suicide?) in 1974.
One of the poems on that book was "45 Mercy Street".

Her poetry is not exactly light reading....but if the man dedicates
a song to her she can't have been all bad in my book.

That was "We do what we're told" (Milgrams 67). this is about a series
of experiments conducted by Milgram where people were asked to give
electrical shocks to some-one who failed to perform certain tasks.

In actuality an actor was used to simulate the pain from the shocks
but the people who were "administering" the shocks did not know that
and many of them continued on to give extremely strong shocks to
the recipient......basically "Doing what they were told".

PG has penned another soundtrack, none other than "The Last Temptation
of Christ". From the clips I have seen, it's eerily moving music
at which he excels. That alone is worth the price of admission,
if it's not banned for you folks in the UK.

Gossip dept: I had heard he was planning a state-of-the-art theme
park somewhere in England, but this was before the Amnesty stuff,
which seems to take a lot of his time. Also, something about an
impending divorce and moving away from Bath?

He has had an interest for quiet a while in building a theme park.
At one stage Australia was thought of as a place for it. It sounded
very impressive like a real life dream whre you control what happens
but I think this has been put on the long (getting longer) finger
as he is so tied up otherwise at the moment.

Is there any Peter Gabriel concerts planned in the UK in the near
(or far!!) future? Other than his participation in the Wembley
    Anti-Apartheid gig.

Ah yes, Mr Gabriel... the man who shaped my life.

I can remember picking up PGII the month it came out, because of "D.I.Y".
   I've been hooked ever since.

I had heard of Anne Sexton before "Mercy Street" appeared, and I heartily
reccomend her books to anyone... especially "The Death Notebooks". Her
story is definately tragic. She attempted suicide a number of times in
her life (but managed to plan it so someone would find her), only
succeeding by gassing herself in her garage.

As for "Shock the Monkey", Gabriel himself stated that it was not about
animal torture, shock treatment, waste disposal, telephone sanitizing, or
any of the other off-the-wall things people read into it... it was, in
his words, "about jealousy". Personally, I can't tell WHAT it's about.

How available are Gabriel bootlegs in the UK/Europe? I'm in Boston, MA
and we have 'em coming out our ears... well, at least, I do (brag brag).
Anything out there 'cross the puddle? I've heard these weird rumours of a
german bootleg of "Big Time" which is the original mix of the song before
all the HORRIBLE LOUSY overdubs were done in New York City... apparently
   it sounds not unlike "Intruder".

I consider myself a hardcore Peter Gabriel fan (from _Trespass_ on),
but I am rather disappointed in his latest release _Passion_. I missed
his unique vocals and lyrics in this one. The mid-eastern sounds got
a little tiring after awhile. There were a few tracks I liked but they
were the more melodic ones. Perhaps I'll get to like it better but it
doesn't have the impact other Gabriel songs have for me.

Gabriel fans should check out the latest issue of Musician magazine.
The article has a lot of information on _Passion_, his new studio
in Bath, and possible plans for a theme park at the 1992 Summer
Olympics. There's even a picture of him with Arquette although
the article doesn't give any details of his separation. Anybody
else know what happened to his marriage?

Also interesting, he thought Genesis did themselves in from the
Michelob commercial. Gabriel himself was offered 1 million from
      Michelob.

Michelob is one of the American MEGA-brews out of St. Louis, MO.

Someone else could probably fill you in on the jingle.
186.28You'll pay me what?! Where do I sign?HYEND::SCHILTONThe older we get,the farther we seeMon Jun 19 1989 23:1213
Michelob got *big* stars such as Steve Winwood, Genesis and Eric
Clapton to allow songs, which also did well as singles, to be used
    in their TV ads.

Eric Clapton's commercial showed him going into a dark, smokey
bar, setting up and playing, while a young couple 'enjoy each
other's company' in the background. Everyone's drinking Michelob
and having a wonderful time ;-) The soundtrack for that is the new
version of After Midnight that was out last year.

Its just another way for megastars to rake in the bucks without
doing a blessed thing - kind of like Robert Palmer with his wenches
    doing the Pepsi commercial.

    Re: his divorce
I heard that it all started with Rosanadana making overtures
at live aid. She went to Greece to make a movie he was there or
went there on her invite and his marriage deteriorated from there.
I always knew she was a scuz. Now I know she's a home wrecking scuz,
although Pete is probably thinking with the wrong head, evidenced
by his move to African based music and politics!

I was rtecently discussed.Whoever he is I really like his sound - it's
very powerful and "driving" - adds a lot to his songs - he played with

Bath, of course, being an infamous nesting place for very large Eagles.
When I lived in Bath, I often had to keep the windows closed because of
the buggers trying to get in to phone Peter Gabriel. 'Just wanna word
with him, squawk', they'd say, 'We've changed out mind, he should
become a part of the machinery again, and stop Phil bl**dy Collins

If you wanna go to Solsbury hill...go soon...

There is a celtic fort on the hill, which is currently home to about 30
protesters. They are protesting against the A36, which is being
built/rebuilt around there, and which will destroy the fort and a huge
    chunk of the hill.
