176.0. "Gut Wrenching Classics" by WELMTS::GREENB (giant land crabs in earth takeover bid) Tue Aug 23 1988 20:43

I got the idea for this note from the Lumps note

Which songs, rather than making you want to shed a tear, hit you
hard in the solarplexus, fill you with the joy of being, make you
want to jump up and shout "WWWAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH"!!!! etc

    I nominate the following

    Anarchy - Sex Pistols
    Strange Town - The Jam
Shake some Action - The Flaming Groovies
    Perfect Skin - Lloyd cole
Wont Get Fooled Again - The Oo

    and loads of others

Hmmm...

I think it's interesting that when people list their all time favorite
kick-*ss, gut-wrenching, shout-at-the-top-of-your-lungs classic, we
get songs like "Stand By Me" and "New Frontier". I guess I never saw
songs like that in this context.

Yeah! I sort of think of gut-wrenching classics as being the sort
of music that you leap about your room lip-syncing the words to,
while performing infinitely complex air-guitar riffs :-)

What makes these songs so special? Why does a particular song
give you such a kick? Someone suggested it was anything that made
him jump on the cat whilst strumming away on an imaginary guitar.

I'm sure everybody has a different record for different modes,
for example when I've had a really bad day, I go home and put any
of the Stranglers first 5 albums on and swear at the walls alot,
and afterwards I feal much better. Sometimes one of Joe Jacksons
first albums gets me going when I get pissed of with particular
    people.
Or Power in the Darkness by Tom Robinson when I'm feeling in
    a righteous mood.
Or Tracks of my Tears by Smokey Robinson when I'm sad ( get
    the violins out people.)

Haven't heard it yet Michael, so it can't be in the German

re. 75 - Surprisingly, it's actually not that different from the
original. Almost the same guitar rif/sound, although (as you might
