163.0. " ** UB40 **" by SENIOR::CHILTON (With autumn closing in...) Tue Aug 09 1988 19:27

We saw UB40 for the first time last night and thought they were
great! Does anyone have any opinions or recommendations on what
    to buy of theirs?

I know they're from Brum (YEAH!! :-)) and that one of them is
being investigated concerning the death of one of their crew.

    Thanks for any info.

    Where did you see them?

I saw them in Brum a couple of years ago, at the NEC,and thought
    they were wonderful.

It was at Great Woods (an outdoor amphitheater in the Boston area)
and they read us a release notice right at the outset because they
were filming a video. So it was very strange - 3 camera crews walking
around everywhere and the audience really being encouraged to whoop it
up by both camera people and the band.

I don't know because I've nothing to compare it to, but the band
were better dressed (suits) and the stage set more involved than I
    expected.

It must be strange for the folks in Birmingham to see them in a
place like the NEC. Do you know where in Brum they're from?

UB40, I'd start with their early (political) stuff:

UB40 (Cover is an unemployment benefits card)
		Present Arms

Both come with free 12" singles...

Labour of Love is also recommended - its all cover versions.

and when you get into them hardcore:

		Present Arms in DUB

I saw them at Wembley Arean (London) a couple of years ago - good
show. I have "Signing Off" and "The UB40 File" (double) which is
a good into to the band.

Lately they've tended to get a bit predictable, with a lot of token
dub stuff etc. in their songs, but they were very good at "Mandela"

    David.

I saw them back in '79 on their first tour supporting The Pretenders.

Out-played Chrissie (miserable-c*w) Hynde and co to such an extent
that the whole audience were clammering for a UB40 encore - during
    the Pretender's session !

I'd stick to the early stuff as well.
163.11Which LP is it from?TRUCKS::MORRIS_DThu Dec 21 1989 16:5512
OK UB40 fans. Can anybody help me out?

My local radio station has been playing a haunting track by UB40
called (I think) "Where Did I Go Wrong". I assumed it was from
the Labour of Love II LP, but when I saw the track listings...you
guessed; it wasn't there! Can anyone put me out of my misery and
tell me which LP (if any) it comes from? I much prefer it to Homely
    Girl!

    Happy Christmas!

If I'm not mistaken, that song is from their previous (1988) album
    entitled simply "UB 40". I think it's self-titled. If it isn't I've
forgotten the real title. It's the same one with "Breakfast in Bed"
(yet another Chrissie Hind (sp?) duet).

My question is, if Labour of Love is all covers, who did "Red Red Wine"
before UB 40? Which version is better?

Thanks! I must go and investigate that album. Does anybody know
    if it is any good?

Incidentally, I was given Labour of Love 2 for Christmas. I have
to admit to being very disappointed even after a dozen plays or
more. Maybe it's a very slow "grower", but the album doesn't seem
to have the impact of the selection of covers on LOL1.

Anyone know if anything new is coming out on these guys. I've just
started listening to their stuff, and I really like them. Homely Girl
has been playing on some Boston stations, but there isn't alot of stuff
going on. I'm hoping if they release a new album they'll tour the
states. I'm also looking for a fanclub to join.

    Thanks in advance,

Well, I finally saw them and I loved the show. I also got to meet them
and they are very down to earth. I hung out with them in the bar, just
    talking about anything and everything.

Are they touring Europe along with the USA? On the t-shirts it says
    it's a world tour.

    Just curious,

    Matt,

In what country? They have a 2 year world tour planned. I do have dates
for the U.S., but they keep changing things around. I can get you a
tentative schedule. When I'm in doubt I just call ticketmaster. I've
seen them 5 times so far, and they just keep getting better.

    Mikef,

    Thanks for the info.

The reason I'm looking for ANY tour info, is the fact that I am
planning a trip to the U.K. and if possible I would like to take in a
    few concerts while I'm there.

If anyone has any more dates, or phone numbers for info, please let me
    know.

    Thanks,
