127.0. "The Primevals...good stuff!" by JUNIOR::CHILTON (Gumby & Pokey Rule!) Mon Jun 27 1988 00:24

As you have all probably gathered by now, when it comes to music
I'm not very adventurous. I pretty much go with the flow. But
yesterday, on the advice of a friend, I bought some new music
sight unseen, or in this case, "sound unheard". As it turns out,
    I like what I bought!

The band is "The Primevals". They hail from Glasgow and have a
new album out here in Boston. Not being able to get the album,
I bought a 12" single from 1987 titled "Heya" and an album from
1984 called "Eternal Hotfire". I also saw a new single of theirs
called "Fertile Mind" but the price ($4.99) put me off.

Tracks I particularly like are "Heya", "She's All Mine", and "Blues
at My Door". Perhaps some of you guys from Ayr could tell me more
    about "The Primevals"?

    Sue :-)

    Heya,

When i "worked" in the Ayr plant there was some geezer going
around telling everyone that he had a famous brother , who was a
rock and roll star in some Glasgow band. Sounded a bit fishy to
me but the soul brother accosted me one day at the coffee machine
and proceeded to sing to me a medley of his brothers's band's
greatest hits. The geezer said he could get me an autograph for
a few quid and a signed photograph for a few quid more. I declined
this kind offer and told the fella to seek serious psychiatric help
and to consider a lobotomy. He then offered me 12", of his brothers
band's latest release , which i declined ; then he offered me tickets
for a gig of their's. I realised that i had to accept one of these
offers to escape and so i took a ticket for a gig. The ticket was
for the "Primevals", and the guy's name who works in the Ayr plant
    is Stuart Goudie.

Maybe you should contact him for more info. on the band ?

but be careful the man's a loon........

Ok Ok ,I give in !!!

Sue ,real glad to read that you're pleased with the 'mevals.
Must admit I was a bit apprehensive as to what you would think
(there's confidence for you !!) Still when your brother plays
with them you expect everyone to say -- "Ahh course he likes
em ,his bleedin brothers in em ' or something like that !

BUT ,(a big BUT , just like you Eran ... ;-} )the Primevals
are the finest band in Scotland right now . No wimpy soul
boys here ,the 'mevals are UGLY ,DIRTY and don't sample any
Prince beats .The press hates them ,Glasgow hates them (what
the hell ,I hate them ,the little bleeder owes me a fortune :-))
but you can make your own mind up ,I'll post the next gig down
your way and you can all tell me what you think .They played
the Rasta club (can't remember the name) in Reading a little while
back and loved it ,and are regulars in London so it should be soon.
All I will say is --- 'do yourself a favour' The Primevals can
    	Rock !

    	Albums ;          			Singles ;

    	Eternal Hotfire Heya (60's hit)

They have a track on a just release album of Captain Beefheart
covers .The Album is called 'Fast and Bulbous' their track
    	is 'China Pig'

I hope you're not referring to WWW here!

    >the little bleeder owes me a fortune :-))

Tell him now that he has a "record-buying audience" (me) in the
US, he can afford to pay you every red cent he owes you!

    When they coming to Boston?

Ya know, maybe if the price of their stuff was lower they might
sell even *more* records here. It's bloody expensive; is that
    because they're "imports"?

Ha Ha Ha ,, him pay his debts ,,, Ha ha ha !!

I suppose though I get my money back in flogging all those
things to these daft students that come up here to Ayr :-)
There was this one guy ,wouldn't leave me alone ,kept asking
if the band needed a Clarinet player !!! Had to give me free
ticket in the end just to get him off my back :-)

Seriously though Sue ,they have plans to play down the East
coast sometime soon .Will let you know.

    Sue,

you wanted to know what this band were like , well i'll tell
    ya.

They were mean , hard rockin' ,*ss kickin' , loud , moody,
    dirty, guitar smackin' and nasty.....

This band was so dirty, i had to have a bath after i went to the
gig. The band were so mean that the club's bouncers were scared
off them. They were so nasty they didn't bother biting the heads
off chickens, no way, they bit the heads of their groupies. This
band are so hard rockin' they make lonesome George Thorougood wet
his panties. I mean these guys are real ruck and roll guys, no pussying
around they're the real thing. If you've had enough of adrogynous
Bros or Sabrina flouncing around singing "boys, boys, boys" or
countless other dross soul(less) acts , then these boys are the
perfect antidote. So take off your white socks and slip on shoes
and put on your dirtiest pair of jeans , your filthiest t-shirt
and your leather bikers jacket , practice sneering and lookin' MEAN
in the mirror and then make your way to a Primevals gig.

Blaaah Blaaah i'm feeling mean and nasty already....

You spilt my beer , i'm goin' to smack your teeth in ..

        Aargh..

By the way the music quite good to.

    	Eran.
(who has just been warned by his therapist to take it easy)

PS. Sue if the band ever come your way tell all your friends that
they had better lock up their daughters.

    Gee, Stuart, the more I hear...well, I just don't know...I'm a
nice girl, you know. I'd probably last five minutes at one of
their gigs. All you have to do is look at me cross-eyed and
    I'm intimidated!

    > they bit the heads of their groupies.

That tough, huh? And to think I was going to volunteer as their
    first American groupie. Forget it!

127.9I don't wanna enter a title, so there!JUNIOR::CHILTONStop this heartbreak overload...Wed Jul 27 1988 18:3113

Because I was impressed with the other Primevals stuff I bought
a couple of weeks ago, on Sunday I bought their John Peel Session
album. Its got 4 tracks on it (Saint Jack, See That Skin, Spiritual,
and Dish of Fish) and was recorded back in September '85.

Michael Rooney, the lead singer, writes a fair amount of their stuff
(right, Stuart?) and on this one has contributed See That Skin, which
    I *really* like, and Spiritual.

You guys down south should see them if you get the chance. :-)

    Right Sue ,
Mickey Rooney does do most of the writing .Malcolm McDonald
,who did most of the guitar work (especially Slide) on the albums
you have ,also contributed heavily .Malcolm has since left the band
to pursue a family life (who said your never too old to Rock'n'Roll?)
so Gordon has been handed all guitar work .They were looking for
a second guitarist (some may have seen the ads in the music papers)
but Gordon is handling things fine so it looks as if they may continue
as the 'magnificent 4' .He's also starting to exert his musical
influence on the band and this can clearly be seen in their most
recent work . It's all good stuff too ,I may add - but then I would
    wouldn't I ;-) .

    Stuart.

Malcolm McDonald ? is that what old football players do when they
retire , play in ruck an' roll bands.
