125.0. "MAN - the band" by MALLET::BARKER (Nigel Barker) Thu Jun 23 1988 20:40

While watching Dire Straits on the TV during the Nelson Mandela
birthday concert I thought I recognised the drummer. Couldn't place who it was
but when Mark Knopfler introduced everyone at the end I realised who it was -
Terry Williams. Hasn't tne boyo done well for himself !

My goodness didn't that bring back the memories. My favourite band of
the early seventies were Man.

First saw them in about 1969/70 while I was still at school.
Particularly remembered this little guitarist who made seagull noises. I saw
them many times over the years until they split up in about 1977. The little
guitarist was still making seagull noises to the end.

They were once described as the British Grateful Dead which is probably
unfair but does enable you to pigeonhole them somewhat. They were certainly a
West Coast band the coast in question being Wales.

They had several changes of personnel over the years but I think Terry
Williams and Mickey Jones (the little guitarist) were in all versions. Other
members were Deke Leonard (remember Iceberg?), Martin (Wall)Ace, Mickey John,
Ken Whalley plus several more who's names escape me at the moment.

	Albums include:-
'Two Ounces of Plastic with a Hole in the Middle'
	'Slow Motion'
	'Maximum Darkness' (with John Cipollina)
	'All's Well That Ends Well'

	Favourite songs:-
	Bananas (Includes the great couplet
I like to eat bananas 'cos they've got no bones
I like marijuana 'cos it gets me stoned)
Many Are Called But Few Get Up
	Come On

All this is off the top of my head at the moment but if anybody else
remembers (or cares) I'd be grateful for further info or corrections . I'd
particularly like to know what the various ex-members are doing at the moment
(apart from Terry Williams that is).

125.1Back Into The FutureCOMICS::LANGNo, I am not kidding !!!Fri Jun 24 1988 00:5417
The only MAN lp that i've got is BACK INTO THE FUTURE, which was released
in the mid 70's I think . The only other one that I remember is

    Wino's Rhino's and Lunatics

Yep, always remember them as being described as the Welsh West Coast
    outfit!

And don't forget that other great couplet from "Bananas" -

"First you wait for it to sprout
Then you get your Rizla's out"

Ah, they don't write them like that any more.

125.4Still kicking in the EightiesRDGCSS::OGDENFri Jun 24 1988 16:5511
I actually saw MAN in the summer of '84, they were at the Bear Pit
in Newcastle and I've got to admit were really impressive. They
were promoting a new album whose title totally escapes me .. I do
remember however that it was on a previously unheard of (by me)
    indie record lable.
Perhaps it's worthwhile checking out your nearest Virgin/Hmv to
    see if they've got it.
    Good luck !

125.5a little more info on Terry...HAZEL::STARRYou ain't nothin' but fine, fine, fine!Tue Jun 28 1988 02:019
Between Man and Dire Straits, Terry Williams played drums for
Rockpile for about five years. He was on most of the solo albums
by Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds in that time, as well as Rockpile's
'Seconds of Pleasure' LP. He also played drums on the Motors'
"Love and Lonliness" 45 (and I think that whole LP 'Tenement Steps').
Terry is definitly one of my favorite rock 'n roll drummers of all
    time!!

    I have just noticed that the band is playing here in Munich in May;
have they been playing in England recently, and if so with which
    line up ?

    Thanks,

Apologies in advance for any mistakes, but as I remember both Mickey
Jones and Deke Leonard are in the band, as well as Martin Ace (big
    ??)

What *was* their original lineup, anyway? It used to be an ever
changing thing, I seem to remember. Where *is* Ken Whaley???

    Bob
125.12KBOU22::JTOWNSHENDMy Doctor says... Mon Apr 24 1989 20:3431
The "original" lineup from 1970 was:

    Mickey Jones
    Deke Leonard
    Martin Ace
    Terry Williams

There were previous versions, but their second Major album ( MAN
or MAN 1970; there were two different releases of the same album) i
think is considered the "start". Before that there was 2oz of Plastic
with a hole in the middle, and before that some very, very rare
albums( Live at the Patti (sp?) rooms, Greasy Truckers, etc).

Ken Whaley only appeared on one or two albums

He was om Slow Motion, and might have been on Rhinos, Winos and
    Lunatics...Which are you ?

I think he also guested on a few tracks on Deke Leonard's solo efforts.

Who knows what he's up to now !

    Other guests included:
Malcolm Morley, Phil Ryan, Will Youatt, Tweke Lewis and Clive John

Clive John was in the Pre-1970 lineup.

I can't remember any more, and all my albums are locked away in
    London !

    John
125.13Not that interesting, but...KBOU22::JTOWNSHENDMy Doctor says... Mon Apr 24 1989 20:4114
I have just remembered some more trivia:-

Martin Ace had a band called Martin Ace & the Flying Aces, which
    included his wife.

Mickey Jones had a band around '78-'79 whose name eludes me

Deke Leonard had a band called Iceberg ( 4 albums) which had a number
of different lineups, the most dynamic was as a three piece with
Terry Williams on drums and Lincoln Carr on base; brilliant !

Deke Leonard apparently used to be in a three piece at the same
time as Johnny Kidd and the Pirates (late fifties), so he must be
getting on a bit now !

I think Ken Whaley may have been a member of Help Yourself?

125.15MAN playing on August Bank Holiday MALLET::BARKERPretty Damn CosmicWed Aug 09 1989 17:5314
MAN are headlining an all day charity concert (for MENCAP) in
Haverfordwest in far West Wales on August Bank Holiday Monday. The event is
being held in a hangar at Withybush Aerodrome, tickets are 4 pounds. I come
from Pembrokeshire and will be taking advantage of a short visit to take in the
concert. I'm really looking forward to my first Man gig in 14 years.

The line-up is Terry Williams, Mickey Jones, Deke Leonard & Martin Ace.

A couple of other bits of news. Their first album '2ounces of plastic
with a hole in the middle' is now available on CD. Their live album with the
late John Cipolinna 'Maximum Darkness' has also been re-released, don't know
whether this is on CD.

Whoops!Sorry about .16,this is all new to me!

If anyone out there is still interested,MAN have recently issued a new
CD called The Twang Dynasty on Road Goes On Forever Records.
It features Mickey Jones,Martin Ace,Deke Leonard and
John`Pugwash`Weathers (ex Gentle Giant)replacing Terry Williams.
The sound is slightly different, not a lot of extended passages, but
its still instantly recognisable to anyone who has followed their
progress -as I have- over the years.
Also issued recently is a set entitled Man Live At The Rainbow 1972
which features the classic line-up that recorded Be Good To Yourself
in a previously unavailable live set.The sound quality isnt great, but
it does let you hear the band doing what they are best remembered for
(not a seagull to be heard!!),that is their Dead influenced
    improvising.
This recording is available on import thro CD Services,Dundee.Mail
me direct if anyone wants the full address.
Has anyone got or can tell me where to get Man Live At Reading?
    	And finally,someone mentioned the `late John Cipollina`,could
someone confirm if this is so?
Reading these letters have prompted me to dig out all the old
    records and wallow in nostalgia.
They dont make music like it anymore!!!!
    .

    re: The Late John Cippolina.

He is indeed "late", by about 4 years or so now. I think he died of
    emphesema (fluid on the lungs?).

I also have the Twang Dynasty album which is good but, in my opinion
a little bit "clean". The first track, "Feather on the Scales of
Justice" is excellent. I still prefer to see them live. Anybody know
of a Man concert coming up?

    Cheers,
    Barry.

Don`t know of any Man dates at present, looks like CD`s will have to
    suffice!!

I guess Wings Of Mercury from Twang Dynasty is the bands tribute to the
late John-C. Q - Is that Mickey Jones doing the guitar breaks on this
song?It is a brilliant `copy` of Cipollinas style and sound!

I would like to get hold of a copy of Greasy Truckers album which
featured two - I think - Man songs.Does anyone have any idea of its
availability 2nd hand?I picked up a copy of Live At Penarth in a
2nd hand store in Glasgow for a couple of pounds a few years back,I
don`t know if these lp`s still command high prices by collectors,or
is noone interested in them nowadays.

Does anyone remember Man spin-offs The Neutrons?

from what I've heard recently MAN are on tour at the moment :-

Last night they played King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, which I think is in
Glasgow - the NME or MM should have details but I haven't had time to
    buy one yet.

I also saw a fly-poster in Chiswick yesterday with MAN in big letters
on it, I was driving past at the time so I don't have any more detail,
    sorry.

MAN have a new CD out on BBC`s Strange Fruit label called Live At
Reading `83 and features reworks of classics like Spunk Rock,C`mon,
    Romain etc...
It`s pretty good ...very rough sounding but captures the atmosphere
    pretty well.
