113.0. "The Stranglers..HELP!!!!!" by SONATA::LANGE (Art,Technology,or Pure,Raw Sex?) Wed Jun 15 1988 17:59

    Hello people...

I entered a note in DREGS::MUSIC, so I thought it would do a little
    better here in UK_MUSIC.

    My name is Jeff Lange

I am in dire need of contacting ANYONE that has anything to do with
    the group The Stranglers.
To avoid a copywrite infringement, I must get permission to reproduce
a variation of their 1977 hit "Peaches".

My,our, version is slightly different in the lyrics, and the music
is TOTALLY different....but it is their song.

I need any info to get in touch with this band...but mostly get
in touch with the writer of this particular song...I have a release
pending in a little over a week, and the "Peaches" variation happens
to be slotted for the release...I could substitute it for another
song...but this tune is ready to go...so's not to delay the release.

    Thanks a bunch,
    			Jeff_in_the_states (Boston)...

Why not call their record company and/or music publishers? I
don't know who they are, but it shouldn't be too hard to find out.

What WAS Hugh doing on `Don't Forget Your Toothbrush' on Saturday
night? A certain line from the Stranglers `Live X-cert' LP came to mind:
the bit where the bloke in the audience shouts "WANKER!". How prophetic.
And why didn't he sing "Bring Me Sunshine" at the end? Surely not trying to
retain some credibilty? He'd blown all that away with that rendition of
"Sweets for my sweet" (or whatever it's called).

    Phil Gill.

P.S. Mr Moderator: Can you change the title of this note, it took me
    ages to find it.

I agree awful choice of song, he even changed the lyrics to Peaches...
    He should give up gracefully....

Glad I didn't see it, then. I thought the whole reason he left the
Stranglers was so that he could "go out on a high".

Changing the lyrics to "Peaches" is fine this has been happening
for sometime, but "sweet for "etc was crap especially when Hugh
recently penned a brilliant solo album.

    Hail Paul Roberts !!!!!

I used to belong, but didn't keep up on the subscriptions for a number
    of reasons.

I remember that arrivals of the magazine always WERE erratic, though.
Sometimes it would be 6-8 months between magazines. They tried at first
to get it out on a bi-monthly schedule, but couldn't keep it up. Now
you just expect it when you get it :-).

Anybody make it to the all-dayer at Fort Brokenhurst on Saturday? I
only found out at 2pm yesterday and couldn't get the cash together for
a ticket in time (they only had 200 on sale when the gates opened at 3).

Does anybody have any info on the new LP, the `...and friends live in
concert' or whatever it's called? I've tried ordering it from a local
record shop, but they seem to be having difficulty finding it...

Are you aware that The Stranglers have a new studio album out now as
well: "About Time"? Their information service sent me a flyer about it
    the other day.

Well I found this note after several months of trying.

"About Time" is the latest offering from the Stranglers and after the
"over" production of the last album "into the night" they seem to have
returned to a simplistic approach to recording.

My prediction in Radio_Radio was correct the new single released around
27th June will be "lies and Deception" (Jet Black penned Song).

The Stranglers and Friends is the official recording of the Hughless
gigs in April 1980. If you want I can get the record number for anyone
who is having difficulty in obtaining a copy.

As for gigs this year.... Missed Gosport and Shepherds Bush due to the
latest Stranglers fan making an appearance.

AS soon as the next date is announed I'll be there !!!!!

Can't believe I'm the only Stranglers fan left in DEC
anyone going to the Forum on the 16th December ???

"About Time" did'nt get the airplay it deserved and failed
it to make a huge impression on the old LP front, however
it was still twice as good as the rip off Elastica album.

Well If anyone is interested this is the agenda for the forthcoming
    year.

The lads are in the Studio putting together the new album release date
    scheduled for Winter/Spring.

Their will be no UK tour this year due to the studio time but some of
us via SIS are remembering our youth and are going on the European
    tour.

The big 21st Party is this year around Sept/October venue to be
    announced.

I have been informed that Hans Warmling the Original guitarist with the
Stranglers @ 1974 (before Dave Greenfield) has died.

It appears he was involved in a drowning accident in October last year.

113.22The history of...CHEFS::JAMESPWed Apr 24 1996 17:5616

Hugh and Hans met in Sweden where they played in several bands. They
both returned to the UK and Hugh met JJ scrounging a lift. To complete
the intial group (Guildford Stranglers) they met Jet who actually
provided the money and accomodation in Guildford, hence the name.

Hans deceided in 74/75 to return to Sweden and the group tried several
instruments ie Saxaphone before settling on a keyboard player, Dave was
    hired via the Melody Maker.

The group then deceided to drop the Guildford prefix and went on a
tour that lasted some 2/3 years to get established.

113.31Not a classic albumCHEFS::JAMESPWed Feb 12 1997 14:4722

Today is a sad day...after being unable to afford the new album until
yesterday (blame the ex-wife and the tax mans new found claim
on my wages) I rushed out and bought Written in Red.

I was awaiting the thumping bass lines from JJ, Dave's genius on the
keyboard.. Jet doing his normal thing keeping it all together.. John's
    writing and Paul's powerful voice.

Every album has classic songs even from the first listen you can pick
them out ie Rattus down in the Sewer... Heroes...Heroes B+W.. Toiler
Raven.. Genetix etc etc.. even the last album had several classic
    songs...Sinister..Lies and Deception...

This one was to me a mass of lead guitar riffs and solo's and that was
about it... not one song caught my ear... and to cap it all they've got
a complet sh*te version of Summer in the City ...aaarrrgghhh

Oh well I suppose after 21 years your allowed one piece of dross....

Stranglers are playing the Albert Hall on the 13th June combined with a
40 piece orchestra. The letter I recieved seemed to point to the fact
that this was going to be their finale...

This coupled with the recent SIS closure means that it could be the end
    of the road.

    ho hum....

is this the result of an unfortunate double booking, or have I missed
a critical metamorphosis in the life of the stranglers ?

The Stranglers 21st Party is on June 13th at the Albert Hall, I suspect
this will be the end, so the ticket is in the post....

Even the Stranglers are suffering from downsizing apparently the
orchestra is now down to 24 ;-)

All good things come to an end ....

Hugh Cornwell has a new album out this week and is currently promoting
his wares around the Virgin record shops...
