99.0. "Young Marble Giants/The Gist/Weekend" by CSMADM::WIEGLEB (Former Scientist, now on wheels) Mon Jun 06 1988 22:06

Does anybody know the where-abouts of the "Young Marble Giants"
band members? I'd like to hear any new music from these folks.
I posted this about a year ago in RECORDS with no news, so I thought
I might hear something new from you folks on the other side of the
    pond.

This is an old favorite group of mine from Wales (Cardiff?) on
Rough Trade Records. There were several off-shoot bands (The Gist,
Weekend, and The Pedestrians) but I have heard no new noises from any
of the band members in a few years. All of their projects were very
interesting, especially "The Gist", and "Young Marble Giants"
debut single. They released their first single about 1979-80, and
the last I heard of any of the members was the WEEKEND "Live at
    Ronnie Scott's" about 1983.

The band members of _YMG_ were Alison Statton, Stuart Moxham, and
    Phil Moxham.

The discography that I'm familiar with is as follows:

YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS (Philip Moxham/Stuart Moxham/Alison Statton)
Anybody know the name of the Cardiff live compilation they appeared
          on?
        "Final Day/Radio Silence/Cakewalking" EP
        "Colossal Youth" LP
"Test Card" EP (Alison Statton not on this)

THE GIST (consists of Stuart Moxham and guests)
        Several singles
        "Embrace the Herd" LP

WEEKEND (Alison Statton/Spike/? with appearances by Philip Moxham)
        A number of singles
        "La Variete" LP
        "Live at Ronnie Scott's" LP

    YMG/THE GIST/WEEKEND
"Nipped in the Bud" LP (Compilation of singles)

DAVID THOMAS & THE PEDESTRIANS (features Philip Moxham)
"The Sounds of the Sand" 45-RPM LP

It's a shame you didn't ask this question a couple of months or
so ago as I remember the very same question being asked in the letters
page of one of the music press. It gave a full description of who
was doing what etc but being my usual helpful self...I forgot what
    was said.

The reason I remember that particular piece though was because I
had been looking for 'Colossal Youth' for yonks before never found
it, but then, one day, through a strange mist, in a dimly lit record
outlet (it was an HMV actually) I saw it, and pounced. Then that
same weekend I was browsing through the music press and lo and behold
there was an article on the self same band.

    Co-incidence or what eh!!!!

    Tommy.

    RE: .1

Argh! Call it bad timing. I just discovered this NOTES file a
week or so ago, otherwise I would have posted the request for info
much earlier. (I posted the question to RECORDS Notes over a year
    ago with no news.)

No chance that you might recall what music press magazine this info
was in? It might give me a better chance of tracking it down.
Thanks for the word though. My own worst guess is that they've all
quit the music business and are currently residing somewhere in the
    suburbs.

99.3Collossal CoincidenceAYOV27::IBROCKWed Jun 08 1988 21:5711

Coincidence yet again. I had a very bad recording of Collossal Youth
and had thought it would be almost impossible to pick up a copy.
But lo and behold, as I was browsing in Virgin in Ayr at the weekend
I spotted a prostine copy of this classic. An excellent addition
to my collection. Better late than never I say.

As for the article on all the members; this was a question answered
on the Fred Dellar page in NME a couple of months back. If my memory
serves me right the guys were talking of bringing a single out under
the original name. Here's hoping you can trace a copy.
99.4Where's Alison StattonCHEST::LAVINFri Aug 23 1991 11:5419
    Hello there,

The people who sent the previous notes may not still be out there after
all this time, but I'm new to this conference and have picked up on
    this subject.

I would like to know where Alison Statton has gone to, I very much
enjoyed her music, particularly all the Weekend stuff.

Didn't some of Weekend begat Working Week - whose music is sometimes
    excellent but often variable.

On another interesting note, we have a sort of "progressive" maternity
ward in our area, and they encourage people to record music for
childbirth. My daughter was born to various bits of music including
Weekend's "Drumbeat for baby". Anyone have any more ideas of what to
enter the World to the beat of?

Maybe you could have a Salt 'n' Peppa track for every step from
    conception on...

For anyone who doesn't know, their new single is called...

I used to play "Colossal Youth" non-stop about 10 years ago. It's a
brilliant album and I'd love to find it again. I suppose I'll have to
check that it's still available (although I doubt it).

FWIW the tracks I liked most are "Salad Days", "Wurlitzer Jukebox" and
    "Searching for Mr. Right".

Christophe beats me to it once again.

I was at college in Cardiff, and we constantly ended up at the same
parties as the Moxham crew. Alison came and went. Phil played with
Weekend, then EBTG, then went back to Cardiff. Stuart had the Gist.
Alison worked very briefly with Bomb and Dagger with Spike and Debbie,
    until they split up.
