    Jim Morrison and The Doors are one of the most brilliant and
    influential bands ever.....I just wish I could have got a chance
    to see them perform....though I know some people who did.
    
    my favourite album is probably 'L.A. Woman' though this is subject
    to change!.....Morrison was a great songwriter and a powerful vocalist
    although towards the end he started going downhill....
    
    talk about The Doors anytime!

    well, that's the big question! is it really him? no-one will ever
    know unless he comes back from that South American jungle he's supposed
    to be living in !
    
    as for videos...'No-one here gets out alive' has been on T.V. a
    couple of times..contains clips of the Ed Sullivan Show, 'touch
    Me', 'Light my Fire', 'People are Strange', 'Unknown Soldier' etc...
    I'd lend it to you gladly but I haven't got it with me. There a couple
     of other Doors videos about which are apparently brilliant but I can't
     remember the names.....come to think of it I saw one down in some record shop in Broad St. Reading
    the other day.

    Is Jim really dead. The reports say he died in the bath of "self
    abuse" ... does this mean what I think it does.
    
    I have been a Doors fan for years ... possibly the best album ever
    released was "Weird Scenes inside the Goldmine" although I liked
    The Doors - 13 too
    
    I would be interested to hear what others think of the material
    that Robbie and the rest of the guys released after Jim's demise
    Personally I hated it - it always seemed to me that Jim Morrison
    WAS The Doors.
    
    I saw "No-one here gets out alive" last time it was on and thought
    it was very pretentious. There are loads of books around about the
    man but I haven't seen many videos. However there has been lots
    of good footage on The Old Grey Whistle Test in the past ....

    yes, the book tells some interesting stories about Jim..though who
    knows to what extent they're true?....it seemed to lay a lot of
    emphasis on Jim's inability to turn up to his own concerts in a
    sober state!...I also think it's a pity that the 'infamous' concert
    in Miami with that 'infamous incident' for which he was indicted,
    was not filmed...then the whole truth of the incident could be known!
    It's common knowledge that the 'Law' was out to get Morrison one
    way or the other and in a way they succeeded.

    I've got the "Doors On Fire" video (think that's what it's called)
    - lots of good stuff, all joined by bit's of Jim's poetry - in fact,
    the colour stuff is really brilliant; to see Jim so life like is
    a bit uncanny!
    
    Not seen the recent live video, but the album is very short in length.
    
    I like nearly all their stuff - quite a few books on them around
    too.
    
    Would've liked to have heard Frank Sinatra doing "Touch Me".  Whatdya

    re. The album of the video... The video is much better. I've got
    that, the old video, and No One Here Gets Out Alive on tape, a book
    called An Illustrated History, by Dan Sugarman (a kid Jim used to
    bring along on the road with him, possibly the one person that actually
    got close to Jim Morrison) 
    
    It's amazing that I can't remember the name of the other video..
    There is Dance On Fire and No One Here Gets Out Alive, but what
    IS the name to the other one???
    
    
    re. The bathtub incident... He is said to have set himself on fire
    while tripping on acid, which I find hard to believe, considering
    he went over there to "dry up".
    
    
    So, what is everyone's favorte albums and songs???
    
    My favorite album is Absolutely Live, and my favorite song is a
    toss up between Celebration of the Lizard and The End...
    
    

    
    I was in Paris for the weekend recently and decided to make a trip
    to Pere Lachaise to see Morrison's grave.....
    
    well, after finding the thing , and it's really funny the way his
    fans have the graveyard signposted....'JIM --->' written all over
    the place , witht various lines from his songs......
    
    in the end, all we found was a small grave with a fairly sober looking
    headstone with the inscription
    
                JAMES DOUGLAS MORRISON
                    1943 - 1971
    
    I don't know what I expected to find there...it's just one of those
    curiosities that you get..anyway, unless you're really into Jim

    I thought I saw his grave in a magazine sometime ago. White marble
    covered in graffiti from his fans, was this the one?

    well, I expected to see the grave with the graffiti but it wasn't
    there!!!!!  it looks as if they've cleaned it up....there were a
    couple of fans in mourning when I was there...you'd think the guy
    had just died that day....but I suppose some people still mourn
    his death...
    
    as for Oscar Wilde's....well, after walking around this graveyard
    , and the thing is massive, for an hour, I was in no mood to look
    for Oscar's !!

    re .4   I haven't heard the album released by the other Doors but
    even if it was terrible there is no way that Jim Morrison could
    be considered all there was to the Doors.  I think that all too
    often the talents of Ray, Robby and John are overlooked.  The music
    that they created was very special with a sound and texture all
    its own.  The power and trancendance of the Doors did not come from
    Jim alone.
    
    re .11  I like visiting graveyards (no I don't think that it is
    morbid) and I am a big fan of Jim Morrison's so I think that I really
    would enjoy visiting his grave.  I hope someday to get the chance.
    
    
    I already requested this in conference DREGS::MUSIC but I just found
    this conference and I would like to hear what people's favorite
    Doors lyrics are.  I particularly like "The End".  There certainly
    is enough stuff to write about the Doors.  I'd like to see some
    more.

    Finally!  Found me a Doors note.  Where do I start?  I'm a Doors
    fan(atic).  Perhaps one of the biggest in Canada.  I have a number
    of videos and bootlegs, a few of which follow:
    
    Videos:
    
    Feast of Friends - the movie Jim made of his tour in '68-'69
    Not the greatest quality unfortunately.
    
    The doors are Open - A British TV special with some excellent live
    concert footage of a concert he did at the Roundhouse in London.
    
    A video of a broadcast on Holland TV.  If you've seen the "Love
    Me Two Times" commercial video, the black and white (brownish) excerpts
    are from this concert.
    
    Outakes from the recording of their "People are Strange" video that
    is on the Doors on Fire video.  Very interesting to see Jim having
    some fun in this film.
    
    Of course, all the appearances from Ed sullivan, Smothers Bros and
    Jonathon Winters Show.
    
    An appearance (with Beard) on the Public Television Station.  Did
    a number of songs in a studio environment.
    
    A few other odds and ends from appearnaces on other TV shows
    
    Boots:
    
    Concerts in Stockholm (2), New York, (1971), Toronto, Franfurt,
    parts of his famous "rap" from the Miami concert.
    ie. "Love my A**, come on baby"  Apparently, most of that concert
    was taped.
    
    
    Have numerous posters, etc.

    Is the whole Roundhouse concert available on video - Ive only ever
    seen exerpts of it.
    I have a friend who has some live Doors boots, sound variable, playing
    always good, not sure of the locations - I'll check.
    Favourite Doors song? Well, one for me has to be the Soft Parade,
    which seems to encapsulate Jims whole philosophy. This of course,
    not to diminish the roles of Robbie, Ray, and John - that mans drumming
    is the best.

    Having said that I saw Robbie Krieger at Hammersmith rewcently and
    he performed a good version of "Love me two times".
    I would disagree with the "Doors were Jim Morrison" statement because
    musically the impetus came from Manzarek and I can't imagine the
    their sound without Kreiger's guitar.

    If anyone has interesting bootlegs ect, and feel an urge to tape
    them for me (I will send a tape) I would be greatful. Afraid I do
    not really have anything useful that people have not already got.

    I visited Jimbo's grave in Pere Lachaise (Paris) back in '83, when I
    was living in the town.

    When I got there I met two US GIs, three German hippies and a few
    disaafected schoolgirls...all sharing a couple of bottles of plonk,
    listening to a ghettoblaster and partaking of uhhhmm..."certain
    substances" ...

    The surrounding tombstones were all covered in Doors-linked graffiti
    and most of Jim's sculptured head was gone. (The graffiti, incidentally
    is completely unprintable...)

    Not my idea of a picnic at all...

    Talkin of graves, and completely unrelated to Jim, I was in Jamaica
    recently, and went to see Peter Tosh's grave, it's in the back yard of
    his house, and his mum greeted me on the steps. There is just a simple
    tomb, and no hippies or graffitti, plenty of certain substances tho'

    Prince (Well, cant be choosy) is to write the score, shame as I'd
    prefer bonafide Doors music, and Tom Cruise (Looks nothing like

    I think the (possible) Prince is more as background music, Obv. they'll
    use Door dtuff for most of the film, otherwise there would be no point
    in making it.  Wonder if Tom will get it out for the film???

       according to BBC's "Film 90" a couple of night's back it was some
       other actor (definitely not Cruise) who had been picked to play
       Morrison's part. Just to let you know that. Personally I don't care
       who does it. (And you may be right about Cruise).

Tom Cruise couldn't act his way out of a cardboard box!

  The actor who is playing the part of Morrison is Val Kilmer(sp?).  He was in
a couple of other movies that I remember.  He was in Top Gun. He was the rival
pilot to Tom Cruise.  Also he was in Willow.  He was the warrior that Willow
met in the Cage.

    Doors fans, at least we ought be glad that one of the greatest,
    most experimental, most talented and exciting groups ever (a big
    understatement) are going to be recognised at last. But when are
    the famous Roadhouse concerts going to come out again from the layer
    of dust on that Granada t.v shelf......
    
    And c'mon, an actor who looks like Morrison.........Tom Cruise looks
    closer to *Van* Morrison than he does to Jim......

    Plese see Sue Chilton's (recent) note in the "Odds 'n Sods" note
    regarding *all* `art' being completely subjective. You're entitled to
    think what you wish on ole Jimbo, as I and everybody else is.

    My reaction to his songs is that when he stuck to straightforward
    melodies (some might say `pop songs') then he did that v v well.
    However when he blathered (that, for me, IS the appropriate word) on
    about `The Dream of the Lizard King' (or whatever it was called) for
    about 20 mins (!) on end...then I know I need to replace that colostomy
    bag...fast!

      Not to get too personal, but I think (IMO) that the moniker(sp)
    you've chosen for yourself fits - DIZZY! Ah, now that I've gotten
    that off my chest I feel better.
    
    As far as the movie goes, I just can't believe they're getting Prince
    (that's read "no talent") to do the soundtrack (if he does as good a
    job as did on Batman...enough said). Please tell me it's not true -
    a crime is being commited. Well, that's Hollywood for you - "the
    only one's who rush the stage are guy's".

    Prince didn't actually do the Batman film soundtrack.  Only a couple of
    his tunes appear in the picture.  His album was just kind of inspired
    (for want of a better word) by the whole Batman scene.

    Not to get to personal, but DECXPS ?? `Woburn Mass' it says...so now
    I know why I'm staying *well* out of the yank music files. I never did
    like LA session musicians much anyhow. (No I'm not referring to The
    Doors). 

    Now that I've got that off my chest I feel *worse*.

    I've said what I wanted to about Jimbo...even about his Parisian grave
    (in an earlier note) which is one saucy insult to the man (from his
    "fans"! mind you). I wouldn't much like to be interred in the vicinity
    with slogans of "____ da mudder! Kill da faader!" plastered across
    *other* people's tombstones. And now you'll say that I'm heading off on
    a tangent from the `bone' (ha ha) of contention.

    Like I said...you're *very* welcome to listen to their music all day
    and all of the night. Phone Krieger and Densmore up and have them
    report me...seems there's lots of `sacred cows' left in the music
    biz...just like everywhere else.

        The line "how old are you?, where'd you go to school?" is from
    the live version of Gloria as performed by the Doors. It wasn't
    a "question" directed towards you. Sorry for the confussion. 
    However, the dizzy remark was, though it was said strictly in jest.      
    No offense intended. Oh, and in case you didn't know already, my
    moniker - "falling through wet forests" is a line from Moonlight

    There is at least one Doors docu film made before the man died.
    I cannot remember ther name but I saw it many years back (about '82) in
    some fleapit.

    Pretty good too. Best bits were the audience swarming onto the stage
    and trying to rip old Jimbo and the rest apart. And the dressing room
    interviews and Morrison making up smt on the piano...

    At least he didn't do the `Lizard King' bit.

    Yeah, they ran that documentary on t.v. around '73 or so.
    It was a Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison one if it's the same. There
    was one part where Morrison started bangin' on the keyboards (real
    lunatic type of stuff). Wildman. I think it was 90 minutes. Same?

    The one I saw was exclusively about the Doors. Again can't remember the
    title...I do remember a Very out-of-it Jimbo trying to `nurse' some fan
    (a girl) who got mauled in the rush.

       Wasn't that footage out of the film that The Doors themselves
    made (the girl with the blood, that is)? More of the footage from
    that film was the scene's for Unknown Soldier, shot in Arlington
    Cemetary, and ended(?) with Morrison being shot by a firing squad
    (actually, the group). Pretty graphic, with Jim spitting blood all
    over himself. Think he had much of a fetish for blood?
     I can't remember the name of that film The Doors made. Anyone know

    The movie was called "Feast of Friends".  As we have communicated
    before, Steve (I think it was you), I have a copy of the movie,
    but it is not in great shape.  The scene you describe is indeed
    in the movie along with a number of scenes from other videos.  A
    lot of the film footage you see of the Doors that isn't them performing
    is from this film.
    
    This includes the scenes of Jim playing the piano while gonzo'ed
    and the other doors sitting on couches with their "girlfriends"
    listening to him.

      Yeah, it was me. Aside from the "Feast Of Friends" film (thank
    you, I've been going crazy trying to think of the name of it), the
    special that was broadcast may have been "The Doors In Europe".
      I have a copy of that one, but it completely slipped my mind at

    Seems as if Paula Abdul has been brought in to help the Film's director
    Oliver Stone. He asked her to help with the choreography! The star
    of the film is a guy called Val Kilmer, who apparently looks and
    sounds like the "Lizard King"
    
    Paula has been helping her friend Val with some of the unconventional
    stances that Jim adopted (normally and while under the influence
    of acid) and also some of the Tribal dances that he performed on stage!

    Calling Art...and other Doors lovers. There's a largish article on the
    film and John Densmore's book in today's Guardian. I can pass it on to
    whoever wants it.

    It's not too complimentary about Jimbo though. Densmore hints that old
    Jim was in fact quite psychotic and adds "Friends have asked me if Jim
    was an asshole or really brilliant. He was both."

    The one Jimbo line I do like is from the American prayer album and it
    reads "...lying on these stained sheets with this bleeding virgin, we
    could plan a murder or start a religion..."

but the soundtrack to the actual film is a mix of The Doors and new music;

Kyle MacLachlan plays keyboards and Val Kilmer (Jim) sings - there may be more
'new' stuff too

I got the biography of Jim Morrison the other day for my Birthday, "Noone 
gets out of here alive'.  He certainly was an intelligent, strange and 
interesting bloke.

     pool and bellyflop" does not constitute a poem in my book. Do it
     again. (Fat boy smirks as his mates slap him about the head).

     Now Morrison (indicates long-haired youth sitting at the back of
     class) I must say this was not quite what I had in mind (reads):
     "Fiery serpent coiled and wreathed in amber sweat/Blind man staggers
     on down the highway/Drying sun bakes the desert clay/Hot 14-year-old
     mama in my Chevy all the way to Death City." It's not strictly about
     springtime is it Morrison ?

     Morrison: It's kind of, uh, how I see the period of spring. Like a
     time of rebirth and communion and, erm, like there's forces at work,
     primal forces...

     Teacher: Perhaps you were thinking of those forces when you wrote:
     "Glisten with love baby/ Let's frug to Valhalla/ I am the stoat king/
     And you are my Guinevere"

     Morrison:  (laughs) Hey that's just free-forming...I get a lot of my
     best stuff that way...

    Isn't Weird Scenes just two of the Doors albums packaged together? I
    can't now remember which two now, but you should be able to buy all of the
    individual albums easily enough, especially in light of last year's
    Oliver Stone biopic.
