72.1Paul Rodgers at 75RDGE22::QUICKI drink therefore I amThu May 19 1988 16:5815
    No, Zeppelin haven't reformed for the program as far as
    I know (unless John Bonham's come back from the grave)
    but Robert Plant is on it tonight...

    I did hear a rumour somewhere about a one-off Zeppelin
    gig with Jason Bonham (John's son) on drums, anyone else
    know anything about it?

    I watched a bit of last night's episode and thought it
    was appalling... I didn't realise Paul Rodgers WAS Paul
    Rodgers until his name was flashed up on the screen under
    him!

72.2And a good time was had by all...JUNIOR::CHILTONGood things come to those who workThu May 19 1988 18:267
    Last Saturday night there was a live broadcast on HBO, a cable channel
    here, from Madison Square Garden of Atlantic Records' 40th anniversary
    "party".

    The last to perform were Led Zeppelin with Jason Bonham on drums.
    Among the four or five they played were "Whole Lotta Love" and,
    the finale, "Stairway to Heaven".

    Damn, and last Saturday night I was eating curry in Ipswich...
    just goes to show what you miss if you don't stay alert.

    Any tapes available?
72.4It was in all the papers!JUNIOR::CHILTONGood things come to those who workFri May 20 1988 18:549

    I hope it will be shown over there for you to enjoy. I heard it was
    terrific. As for me, I live way out in the country - they haven't
    yet strung the cable in my little town. The person who was going
    to tape it for me screwed up the VCR, so I'm left high 'n dry like
    you.

    Anyone in the Marlboro area have it on VHS and willing to loan it
    out for a couple of days?
72.5Bad reviews on Zep ..OCTAVE::VIGNEAULTThe Central ScrutinizerFri May 20 1988 19:3420

    Haven't watched it yet, but I managed to borrow a VHS copy of it.

    The reviews in the states here about Zep were not good. Most have
    stated that Jimmy Page's playing was sloppy, unimpressive, and
    uninspired. Also heard that he looked like he was drunk as a skunk
    staggering about..

    Other comments about R. Plant not being able to reach those high
    notes any more. He's done well with his present solo efforts since
    they've been written with his present vocal abilities in mind.

    On a tangent, I remember reading a Rolling Stone Magazine article
    about Jimmy Page a while back in which they stated that he's usually
    quite drunk when he plays, and quite frequently they would have
    a "ghost" guitar player off stage who was actually doing the playing
    well Page faked it onstage. I hate to see a talent destroyed by
    drug abuse.

    I'm looking for a tape of it, too!! My cable died just before they
    came on, so I was bummin'. If anyone gets hold of one, can I borrow
    it or get a copy???

72.7Jimmy Page fluffs again!MALLET::JEFFERYIt isn't easy being the Dauphin.Mon May 23 1988 12:4410

    "Led Zeppelin" played on Saturday evening as the Atlantic at 40
    programme was shared over a couple of evenings. Everyone is right
    saying that Jimmy Page looked drunk, and fluffed the guitar.

    Still, the other members were pretty good.

72.8Still fun to see ..OCTAVE::VIGNEAULTThe Central ScrutinizerMon May 23 1988 17:1612

    I finally got to see the show over the weekend. One of the highlights
    I felt was Robert Plant's current band. The guitarist in his band
    is pretty hot. Despite Jimmy Page's uninspired solos, I still enjoyed
    seeing Led Zeppelin again. Biggest let down was the solo that Page
    played in Stairway to Heaven. It was (in my opinion) totally lacking
    in imagination and drive. Perhaps it would've been better to have
    left Led Zeppelin to the remembrance of their past achievements.

    I think Plant's current band sounded a LOT better.

    .8 has the truth of it... Plant's singing was good, if perhaps
    not quite as energetic as in the old days; John Paul Jones
    was his usual quiet competent self; Jason Bonham played excellently
    (but why oh why was he billed as John's brother?); but Jimmy Page
    was a pathetic, drunken, coked-up shadow of his former self and
    I was cringing with embarrassment listening to him... let's hope
    that was the last 're-union' unless he gets himself back together
    first...

    JJ. (who also thought Plant's own band were great).

      Remembering the last couple of times I saw the once great guitarist
    live (or at least, not completely dead) he looked capable of the
    Soviet space program a run for its money. Both times he came on
    stoned, then added copious quantities of alcohol. Only time he managed
    to pull himself into the same universe as the rest of us was when
    he played 'Wonderful Tonight'... ...which he wasn't.

    My money's on that being the last re-union.

    Just spoke to a friend of mine who was backstage at the concert
    (this guy manages Mick Taylor) and the first thing out of his mouth
    was also a flood of negative comments re: Jimmy Page. He also stated
    how sloppy he was on stage.

    The last time I saw him live was at the A.R.M.S. Concert several
    years back with Clapton & Beck @Madison Square Garden and I thought
    he was pretty good then. Like alot of others, I think he's just
    burned out after alot of years in a very consuming business.

72.12What about Emerson,<fill-in-the-blank> and Palmer?ASIA::MCLEMANJeff McLemanThu Jul 14 1988 21:244
    I saw some of the HBO stuff and caught Keith Emerson doing an old
    favourite, AMERICA (from the days of the NICE).

    yeh, I was a wonderin' just who that drummer was - any ideas. I
    liked their set - still a bit of energy in there, although I don't
    think they would have much of a following now. They tried a comeback
    a few years back and I don't think much happend - with Cozey Powell
    I think!
