67.0. "Wired...same old thing" by WARDER::REXLEY (In France a skinny man....) Wed May 11 1988 18:04

    Did anyone watch the new Channel 4 music prog, 'WIRED' last week?

    If so do you think that the London "trend scene", New York "street"
    formula will stick ?

    I quite enjoyed the show, good to see acts like Sade and Robert
    Plant live.....although when finished it did notstrike me as being
    something new!

67.1Is it up to standard !SUBURB::COATESAWed May 11 1988 22:0027

      I must own up and admit that I did watch "WIRED" the previous
    week, but as you did I felt that the programme showed us nothing
    new.
      Isnt it about time the B.B.C. and I.T.V. realise what the music
    fan wanted? I.T.V. ranted and raved about the "ROXY" and tried to
    win every one over from T.O.T.P. But what happened ? They did'nt
    get the veiwers. So they tried another plan of attack. They put
    the programme on so late at night that no-one stayed up to watch
    it anyway.
      The only programme that really came up to scratch was The Tube.
    But again that was srcapped.
      maybe Janet Street Porter may come up with something!

      I would be interested in other "Noters" views on this matter

67.3Whistle Test, R.I.P.ERIC::SALLITTDave @RKG or LZOThu May 12 1988 14:1510
    Without wanting to get into a "those were the days" argument, the
    Old Grey Whistle Test had to be the best contemporary music prog
    *any* station ever broadcast. They used to blend sessions of
    established stars from outside the charts along with others trying
    to break new ground and in my view achieved an excellent balance.

    I sat up New Year's Eve to watch the final show, it made me wish
    I hadn't missed so many of the other shows over the years.

    I'm not sure whether or not it is a music (specifically) programme,
    but I did see a programme on Tuesday night called DEF II (I think)
    which looked quite good.

    Any one else see it?

    Yup - FSd (as mentioned earlier) is part of DEF II. However those
    of you who caught it last week (Wednesdays) will have noticed an
    over-use of writing scribbled all over the screen as the acts
    performed. According to the Sunday Mail this was supposed
    to be "satirical ... ha ha.

    Last Night!

    I watched (for the second time), FSd on BBC2 about 6:45, and as
    mentioned in -.1 there is TOOO Much scribling on the screen, of
    which half Is ilegible or on it's side scrolling from top to bottom
    or visa versa.

    The actual programme is a welcome sight, but the writing is unbearable!

    Well that's my opinion anyhow, what does everyone else think?

67.7Soup Dragon inf?RDGENG::MACFADYENRoderick MacFadyenThu May 19 1988 16:319
    Yes, too much writing on the screen. It's almost like they think
    just showing the band playing is too boring. The other thing that's
    irritating on FSD is the little advert-style breaks that they keep
    having for no apparent reason.

    But, still a good program. I really liked the Soup Dragons, good
    guitar-based stuff. Anyone know if they've released any records?

    Don't know much about the Soup Dragons except that everyone is
    raving about them back home ... I have to take this on authority
    at the moment ! Don't read the writing, concentrate on the acts
    and you'll be alright - it isn't half hard work though ...

    What about him in Hue & Cry though - pretentious or what ?!
67.945384::IBLwhile you still can!Mon May 23 1988 20:395

    The Soup Dragons have released a new album this month, it's called
    "This Is Our Art" and got a decent enough review in "Q" magazine.
