52.0. "Reggae and Ska in the U.K." by EXIT26::SAARINEN () Thu Apr 28 1988 19:48

     Music Lovers...

What is happening in the UK for Reggae and Ska Bands these days?

Has Ziggy Marley's Conscious Party Album made any big splashes
     across the pond?

I listened to a few of the earlier songs by The Melody Makers
(stuff like "Met Her On A Rainy Day" etc.), and although I haven't
heard any tracks from the new ZM album, I suspect that the Brit
public will file it under "Musical Youth" (if you haven't heard
of Musical Youth, they are [were?] a kid's reggae band from the
early 80's who had a hit with "Pass The Dutchie" in the UK, I don't
know how it fared in the USA), amusing but not serious.

    Ok, bring on the provocateers....8^)

I have the Muscial Youth tape and know of the "Pass the Dutchie
on the Lefthand side". That was given some minor play on the local
area Boston Reggae stations here a few years back.

I didn't take them very seriously either, but that Dutchie track
    did have a ketchy riddim.

I am alittle astounded that in the UK Ziggy Marley would be
filed under the same Reggae taste as "Musical Youth". Ziggy
might be trying alittle too hard in bringing on the Rasta
philosophy of his father though...but I think he does pretty
well. His voice and embellishments of the lyrics are truly
    cutting.

I wasn't all that happy with the production of the album
by Tina Weymouth and Gerry Harrison of the Talking Heads.
Lee "Scratch" Perry could have taken Ziggy alittle Higher
I thought if he helped in the Co-production of the album.

Ah yes but...like I said, I haven't heard anything from the *new*
album, so he may have developed musically as he's grown older (the
"Met Her..." era was what, 1985?). I'll try and grab a listen to
the album soon and start making some *qualified* comments!

Lee "Scratch" Perry....yeah, there's a name that crops up almost
everywhere these days, he even gets a credit for "spiritual assistance"
    on the new Woodentops album!

The Ziggy album got good reviews all round, especially in Time Out.
It appears as though Ziggy is one step up from Musical Youth, and
getting a fair amount of publicity in the UK.

The reggae scene here is strange. Aswad have just had their first
number 1 UK hit, with a song that isn't that representative of their
usual sound. They've been around over 10 years. This is quite
often how things go. Same thing went for Third World and Steel
Pulse, whose early albums were much more 'rootsy' that later offerings.

I went through a rejuvenated reggae phase last year - love it!!!

ZM & the Melody Makers "Concious Party".

Heard it last weekend for the first time. After a few play's I can
say nothing against it, in fact I may even go out and but it (which
by the way is very unusualy for me).

I hope he continues to bring out such good music in the future.

bye for now all you Regae lovers...

Interview with Ziggy in N.M.E. a couple of weeks ago - a lot about
the Marley legend etc. Very interesting - Ziggy could do it, but
probably needs to tour to tie in with album.

I believe there are three Marley's on the Conscious Party Album.

P.S. ....But after reading a Book about Bob Marley by Timothy White,
it seems o'l Bob was a Ladies Man and apPARENTly fathered
around a dozen other children, not with Rita.

    Hello old friend!!

I saw this in the papers and thought it could be a good 'un. Not
too bothered about ASWAD, but would like to see Ziggy - great album.
    How 'bout it?

    David.
